Connections Between Project-Based Learning And Mathematics Instruction: Exploring Their Integration In Classroom Curricula, Zoe Nietert
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Project-based learning is poorly defined leading to confusion and inconsistent implementation in the classroom. To eliminate the use of project-based learning as educational jargon it is imperative to define the term. This project aims to define project-based learning in a manner that outlines its critical and variable attributes. From the established definition, a rubric is created to determine the quality of project-based learning materials, specifically in the context of math education. The purpose of the rubric is to create a tool to be used in future classrooms as a means of identifying classroom curricula that demonstrate both project-based learning and …

Defining And Developing Curricula In The Context Of Cooperative Extension, Martin H. Smith, Steven M. Worker, Cheryl L. Meehan, Lynn Schmitt-Mcquitty, Andrea Ambrose, Kelley Brian, Emily Schoenfelder
Journal of Extension
Effective curricula are considered to be the cornerstone of successful programming in Extension. However, there is no universal operationalized definition of the term curriculum as it applies to Extension. Additionally, the development of curricula requires a systematic process that takes into account numerous factors. We provide an operational definition of curriculum by describing the parts of a curriculum, discussing the organization of those elements, and recommending theoretical frameworks that complement the learn-by-doing approach used in Extension. We also describe strategies to guide curriculum development, adaptation, and evaluation that will help advance the potential of Extension curricula to achieve their intended …

Quantitative Literacy For The Future Flourishing Of Our Students: A Guiding Aim For Mathematics Education, Samuel L. Tunstall
Quantitative Literacy For The Future Flourishing Of Our Students: A Guiding Aim For Mathematics Education, Samuel L. Tunstall
Numeracy
In this essay, I examine the extent to which mathematics education and education for quantitative literacy support students’ present and future flourishing, a concept that entails realizing objective goods in a life lived from the inside. This perspective requires disentangling philosophical assumptions about the aims of mathematics education, which—in the context of flourishing—I take to be a hybrid of those that have informed curricular discussions over the past two centuries. In the process, I problematize ("make strange") many of the common reasons given for students learning mathematics, including: learning it for one’s career, for one’s logical reasoning skills, or …

Many undergraduate institutions are reforming their courses to increase student engagement. A critical challenge in these efforts is to engage the academic community beyond the instructors in the process of change. At our university, we embraced this challenge by creating a volunteer community of faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates to design the discussion curricula for a new introductory biology sequence. We report on this process of curriculum development using a case study approach and describe how the community created the new curriculum and how they perceived the outcomes of the process. Our findings indicate that this curriculum design approach …

In this research report, we examine the perceptions that parents have regarding the use of multiple strategies in their children’s classrooms, and then align their perspectives with the research literature. The themes of adaptivity and flexibility of strategies, conceptual and procedural knowledge, disposition and identity, implementation of multiple strategies, and the lack of effectiveness for all students were found in the literature as well as within the parent comments. Some of the parents produced counter-examples from the literature based on their experiences with their own children. By understanding the varying notions that parents (and the literature) have about the use …

In Canada, parents’ growing concerns about the “new math” are drawing public attention. Rather than dismiss such concerns, understanding parents’ perspectives and garnering their support is essential to ongoing curriculum reform and children’s success. In this paper, we present results of a phenomenographic study examining parents’ conceptualization of the current mathematics curriculum. We focus specifically on parents’ responses to school-to-home communication regarding mathematics curriculum reform: (a) seeking out further information, (b) accepting communication as given, and (c) resisting information disseminated. We examine parents’ perceived communication through a postmodernist framework, that is to consider communication as (im)possible, inevitably political, and subjectless.
