Identidad Personal: Curriculum For The World Language Classroom, Kyrsten Nagypaul
Honors Projects
This project provides accessible, compelling curriculum for Spanish teachers to teach for social justice in their classroom. The integration of other disciplines is integral in making this curriculum accessible and compelling by giving students practical experience with technology, literacy skills, and social skills. More specifically, this project will help them to contribute to the social-emotional health and well-being of their students by supporting the students through an exploration of their personal culture. The curriculum is designed in a manner that is supported by theory and builds upon itself as students move through the experiences.
The Relationship Between The Use Of Curriculum Materials And Inquiry-Based Pedagogy, Laura Jo Elzinga
The Relationship Between The Use Of Curriculum Materials And Inquiry-Based Pedagogy, Laura Jo Elzinga
Theses and Dissertations
Little change has resulted from decades of attempts at reforming the teaching of mathematics (Davis et al., 1990). This study involved approximately 43 teachers who had completed an inquiry-based professional development program prior to being provided with a new mathematics curriculum designed to support inquiry-based teaching. It analyzed the relationships between their implementation of the inquiry-based teaching and their use of the curriculum materials. A series of bivariate correlations were run to investigate the relationships between the professional development and aspects related to the implementation of the new curriculum. The factors being so inter-related, it was hypothesized that relationships would …

Real-World Learning In Middle School Mathematics, Elizabeth Ackerson
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
My research question for my capstone project is: How does incorporating real-world word problems into weekly math curriculum in middle school affect students' learning, engagement, and understanding? I have created a math word problem curriculum, “Word Problem Wednesday”, to be used in my own math classroom to create real-world learning opportunities through problem-solving. I teach 5th-grade math, and I have noticed a lack of understanding of word problems related to problem-solving in the classroom. The curriculum I have developed is based on the need for a curriculum where word problems are purposefully incorporated weekly with meaning while creating understanding. Every …

Cognitively Guided Instruction Strategies For Strengthening Fifth-Grade Students Understanding Of Fraction Concepts, Hao Li
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
An area in mathematics critical for building mathematical knowledge and reasoning is developing children's foundational knowledge of fractions. Understanding fractions is also a building block for developing students' algebraic reasoning and sense-making (NMAP, 2008;) It is very common to see in fifth-grade math classroom there are students who think fraction concepts and procedures seem to have no link to one another and for whom meaning-making in fractions is a challenge (Pitsolantis & Osana, 2013). Therefore, how to design math activities that will increase fifth-grade students' understanding of fraction concepts emerged as research question for this capstone project. History of learning …

Raising The Awareness Of Somali Families: The Positive Impact Of Dual Language Education On Student Success, Khaleef Warsame
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Studies have found that dual language education is powerful for all learners and particularly essential for the success of first- and second-generation immigrant learners in the United States. The learning model enhances students’ academic achievement, school participation, and healthy identity development. Students proficient in both their heritage language and culture and their new homeland’s dominant culture and language are also more likely to gain higher upward mobility and enjoy advanced cognitive development. While the benefits of dual language education (DLE) are explicitly illustrated in the literature, there are currently no Somali dual language programs found to be existing in Minnesota …

Service-Learning And Language Acquisition In Secondary English Language Learners, Martha Schultz
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The driving question in this capstone is, how does service-learning promote academic success and language acquisition in secondary English language learners (ELLs)? Research shows service-learning makes learning more meaningful and increases student motivation across disciplines. While a growing number of studies have documented the benefits of using service-learning in the language classroom at the post-secondary level to aid in language acquisition, this pedagogy is not commonly used in the English Language (EL) classroom at the elementary and secondary level. Yet, ELLs across the United States are struggling both academically and socially. The goal of this project is to illustrate how …
Toxic Math-Masculinity: Changing Harmful Lay Theories Of Mathematics To Improve Student Achievement, Zac Kamm
Toxic Math-Masculinity: Changing Harmful Lay Theories Of Mathematics To Improve Student Achievement, Zac Kamm
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Students often come into the secondary math classroom with an implicit understanding of mathematics that negatively affects their performance in the classroom. These lay theories often reinforce an entity theory of mathematical ability that views ability as fixed and unchangeable. In turn, this view of mathematical ability influences students’ goal orientations. Research shows the positive benefits of an incremental theory of mathematical ability and a mastery goal orientation on mathematics student achievement. Much of the research literature focuses on describing or quantifying the connection between incremental theories of mathematical ability and student achievement rather than describing effective strategies for changing …

Simplification Of Robotics Through Autonomous Navigation, Grant Turner
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
With self-driving vehicles, college campus food delivery, or even automated home vacuuming systems, robotics is undoubtedly becoming more prevalent in everyday society and it can be expected to continue with time. While many people are owners, users, or even just spectators of theses robotic products or services, there seems to be a negative perception of robotics that poses an intimidation factor regarding the attempt to understand the ideas driving technology. This perception tends to view robotics as machines that require rich education to understand the complexity and interworkings of, thus attempts understand the field are neglected.

Picking Up Steam: The Role Of Languages And Linguistics, Keith Mason
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Languages and linguistics are powerful skills that enhance STEAM curricula and careers. A variety of approaches and methods to language teaching and learning inform educators how to proceed with the enhancement of STEAM programs. Linguistics, the science of language, can help STEAM students, especially within the science and mathematics components, because of its reliance on hypothesis formulation for scientific inquiry and data collection and analysis. Language, an important aspect of the human experience, elevates or picks up the STEAM experience.
