The Use Of Cooperative Learning Strategies To Improve Achievement And Self Esteem Levels Among A Group Of Middle School Perceptually Impaired Students., John R. Dorney
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report described a program for improving student achievement, as measured by the California Test of Basic Skills, and levels of self-esteem, as measured by the Piers-Harris Children’s Self-Concept Scale, in a middle school in a suburban/rural district of middle to upper middle class population.
Analysis of problem symptoms revealed initial perceptual impairments, low levels of self-esteem relative to intellectual and school factors, and a consistent history of below grade level achievement levels. Contributing factors were also found to exist in familial structure and attendance and behavioral factors. The research project sought to improve student performance in these areas through …

This report describes four aspects of a two-year research project to promote an efficacy continuum as a school based paradigm in the face of infusion overload and fragmented instructional delivery system mandates. The targeted group is "at risk" Yellow House eighth grade students for which the project intervenes. The planning and implementation phases of the practicum facilitates renewal, continuity and integration of proposed system goals although the system is in constant upheaval and flux because of the change in two State Chief Officers.
The practicum initiates a school wide metacognitive study- thinking skills program to routinize independent skill development to …

This report describes a program to improve language skills for the elementary students, grade one through grade six, at the Harker-Wylie Elementary School. Review of students reading placement, based on Ginn Criteria Reference Test scores, indicated that 46 percent of students are reading below grade level. On the language subtest of the 1988 California Achievement Test, 44 percent of the students scored below the 50th normal curve equivalent.
The following factors were identified in this Research Project as possible causal factors: a single instructional methodology used for the teaching of reading, the limited usage of the language arts experience approach …

"The need to understand how the universe works is fundamental to human nature. It is also essential for safely managing the human future; but foolishly, we have designed a society based on science and technology in which hardly anyone understands science and technology. This is a clear prescription for disaster.
Our future depends on producing and encouraging highly competent, ethically responsible young scientists, as well as a much greater scientific literacy in the general public.
The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois, is dedicated to meeting this challenge...

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
At New York City Technical College (City Tech), the high failure ad attribution rate in a course entitled Introduction to Mathematical Analysis (MA 185) is affecting students’ career goals. Most students must successfully complete this basic college level intermediate algebra and trigonometry course to graduate. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the implementation of a new computer enhanced instructional design into the graphics portion of the MA 185 curriculum increases students success rate.
Prior to implementing computer-enhanced instruction (CEI), workshops were conducted for mathematics faculty members. A call for volunteers determined that twelve instruction were interested in …

Development Of A Remedial Medication Administration Program For Newly Hired Nurses At A Veterans Administration Medical Center In Central Florida, Diane M. Lipe
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this study was to determine the medication administration proficiency of newly hired nurses at a large Department of Veterans Affairs (D.V.A.) Medical Center located in Bay Pines, Florida and to design a remedial education program in medication administration which would effectively meet specific deficiencies found in this population. Legal and professional mandates require proficiency in this domain of practice, yet nursing literature and recent experience by D.V.A. nurse educators have raised serious concern regarding the adequacy of nurses' proficiency in this area.
Research questions include: 1. What is the medication administration proficiency of newly hired nurses at …

Method of Instruction
The educational program of the law school is designed to equip its graduates to render the highest quality of legal services, while instilling a sense of professional responsibility. The case method of instruction is used in many courses. The beginning student is trained in the analysis and solution of legal problems by the application of logical reasoning. The course of study is not designed to teach legal rules, but rather to provide a foundation for the application and analysis of the law and the development of professional skills. Substantive courses, dealing with the content of the law, …

The Effect Of Science Inservice Programs On The Self-Efficacy Belief Of Elementary School Teachers, P.A. Moore Edd
The Effect Of Science Inservice Programs On The Self-Efficacy Belief Of Elementary School Teachers, P.A. Moore Edd
Dissertations
The Problem: Science education at the elementary level has not been successful. As a nation we are producing fewer and fewer scientists and science teachers, as evidenced by the narrowing of the pipeline of students entering science classes in high school and beyond. Since a student's interest in science begins at the elementary level, any improvement in science education in these grades will help ameliorate the trend toward science illiteracy. Such an improvement rests on three critical areas: the teacher, the curriculum, and the methodology. Since preservice programs do not include rigorous science requirements, it is necessary to supplement teacher …

A Study Of Factors Contributing To Achieving And Sustaining School Effectiveness In Elementary Schools, Janet A. Hageman Chrispeels Edd
A Study Of Factors Contributing To Achieving And Sustaining School Effectiveness In Elementary Schools, Janet A. Hageman Chrispeels Edd
Dissertations
An effective school is one in which there are overall high levels of achievement sustained over time and in which students from the lower socioeconomic (SES) subgroups are performing at levels comparable to higher SES groups. Through a case study methodology, the author analyzed the degree of effectiveness in eight elementary schools and factors that contributed to attaining this level of effectiveness. Over a five year period, data were collected at each school through interviews, effective schools surveys, CAP test results, and other school records. The effectiveness of each school was determined by applying three criteria that evaluated the overall …

An Evaluation Instrument For The Selection Of An Integrated Learning System, Sally Ann Draper Zoll Edd
Dissertations
The purchase and integration of integrated learning systems (ILSs) in schools is on the rise. Dissatisfied with stand-alone computers and software, educators are looking for a more sophisticated integration of computer technology throughout the entire curriculum, specifically, an ILS. Current research evaluating such systems is scarce. The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument that decision makers in school districts could use to evaluate an ILS at the pre-purchase stage. The instrument was designed expressly for school district personnel who have completed a needs assessment and have determined that an ILS will meet their needs. The instrument was …

Publishing companies' consultants plan and implement staff development programs in reading to meet inservice needs of school districts throughout the United States. The changes that are occurring in reading education are impacting the role of the classroom teacher. Inservice programs that were previously successful must now be evaluated to determine if they meet the current needs of teachers.
Studies that assess student achievement indicate many students graduate from high school without basic skills essential for them to be productive members of society. The most basic of these skills is the ability to think. As a result of these studies there …

Improving Social Studies Achievement: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Lindalee Kaminski
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
A high percentage of students in a second grade class with low socio-economic characteristics demonstrated exceptionally low achievement in social studies. The problem was addressed by the implementation of an interdisciplinary program to increase basic skills in all areas of the curriculum. Activities designed to increase the target group's understanding of social studies concepts while practicing skills in reading, language arts, math, and science were incorporated into all subject areas utilizing a whole language approach. An emphasis on critical thinking and daily news events allowed for student growth in inferential comprehension and the formation of attitudes about the world. The …

The Use Of The College-Level Academic Skills Test For The Nontraditional Community College Student., Harry T. Albertson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
In Florida, there is the anomaly of a student successfully completing a prescribed curriculum leading to the associate in arts degree and having the degree and access to the upper division delayed or denied because of an inability to pass a four-hour exam. The exam is called the College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST), and recent studies postulating biases within the Competency standards of the test et concern about statistically significant score differences between certain populations have raised issues about the test performance of nontraditional students.
Succinctly, this study utilized quasi-experimental techniques to isolate the performance of adult students. female students, …
