A Middle School Curriculum For Those Gifted In Art, Gerald A. Bresnahan
A Middle School Curriculum For Those Gifted In Art, Gerald A. Bresnahan
Theses
The development of sound programs in gifted education throughout the country is increasing. However, some subject areas have received more attention than the fine arts. This project involved the creation of a curriculum guide for gifted art students at the middle school level. The content of this curriculum guide was determined by a careful research of the literature in various areas of gifted general education and gifted art education. Successful programs receiving national recognition were also examined. Significant differences between gifted and general art programs are included. The results from a review of the literature indicated necessary components for an …

(1985) Philosophy For Children: An Important Curriculum Innovation, Laurance J. Splitter
(1985) Philosophy For Children: An Important Curriculum Innovation, Laurance J. Splitter
Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter
Young children possess attributes which deserve to be called philosophical. These may be separated into two broad clusters: a structural or methodological component and a substantive component. These components provide the basis of a curriculum and teaching methodology which addresses some key educational objectives. Philosophy for Children is a program which utilizes and expands upon the capacity for reflection and inquiry which all children possess by creating, in the classroom, a community of inquiry. This is achieved with the help of three resources: (a) a philosophical novel, (b) an accompanying manual for teachers, (c) a teacher who is both philosophically …

Curriculum Relationships Within The University Of Alaska, Anchorage: A Report On The School Of Justice, John E. Havelock
Reports
This report, commissioned by the Office of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, is a preliminary inquiry into the relationship that the curriculum of the School of Justice bears to the curriculum of the College of Arts and Sciences and the other schools of UAA. In particular, the inquiry was initiated to identify "service course" needs of the College of Arts and Sciences and other Schools of the University, that might be met by the Justice faculty and the extent to which other units of the University meet the "service" needs of the School of Justice.

A Critique Of Elliot Eisner’S Educating Artistic Vision, John Jagodzinski
A Critique Of Elliot Eisner’S Educating Artistic Vision, John Jagodzinski
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Educating Artistic Vision is an "old" book written a decade ago. As such there are many aspects in it, I'm sure, Eisner would not accept today. Therefore, the critique is made by keeping his later works, particularly The Educational Imagination (1979), in mind. To begin, Eisner claims that there are two major justifications for the teaching of art, both of which he presents in an either/or fashion. First a contextualist justification is made by claiming that art satisfies social needs. From this perspective, the practice of art must be pragmatic: art as leisure, art as creative thinking, art as self-esteem …

Developing A Conversational English As A Second Language And Acculturation Program For A Social Service Agency Engaged In The Resettlement Of Soviet Jewish Immigrants, Robert Charles Wachman
Developing A Conversational English As A Second Language And Acculturation Program For A Social Service Agency Engaged In The Resettlement Of Soviet Jewish Immigrants, Robert Charles Wachman
MA TESOL Collection
This paper describes the creation and first year of development of a three-component conversational ESL and acculturation program for Soviet Jewish immigrants. The project was designed to meet the needs of a private social service agency engaged in resettlement in Long Beach, California. It consisted of reorganization and development of a newly formed volunteer tutorial project, and the creation and development of a weekly class program and a series of cross-cultural communication gatherings.
Of special note are selections which discuss the orientation, on-going training, and problems relative to the employment of non-professionals as tutors and teaching assistants. Approaches, methods, and …
Language And Culture In Two Worlds: Teaching English To Hmong Refugees, Sherry Lieberman Preiss, Cammille Smith
Language And Culture In Two Worlds: Teaching English To Hmong Refugees, Sherry Lieberman Preiss, Cammille Smith
MA TESOL Collection
This project is a presentation of two curricula, one for teaching Hmong children and the other for teaching Hmong adults. The curricula provide the necessary guidelines to implement bicultural ESL instruction in a monolingual setting. Included are theoretical discussions that explain the rationale behind the format and content of each of the curricula. The curricula themselves are divided into situational units containing various linguistic and cultural components. The project stemmed from a student teaching internship in Rutland, Vermont, where the authors instructed several families (adults and children) of Hmong refugees. Although the project was primarily aimed towards teaching Hmong refugees, …
Communication Modules: Student-Generated Language Arts Projects For Bilingual Education, Annie Katherine Hawkinson
Communication Modules: Student-Generated Language Arts Projects For Bilingual Education, Annie Katherine Hawkinson
MA TESOL Collection
The materials consist of nine curriculum units designed for use with bilingual students at 4th, 5th, and 6th grade levels. Although originally developed for French-English bilingual students, they can be used with any language group, since the learning activities are themselves not language-specific. The language used for each communication project is collected from the students themselves: hence the units themselves can be used with any bilingual group.
The learning activities are also designed to be used in multilevel classes, i.e. classes where students' language proficiency may vary. They of course may also be used in classes where such variation does …

All Graduate Projects
This project is the development of a curriculum of language packets in Spanish dealing with the communication concepts which are tested in the MAT-SEA-CAL Oral Language Proficiency Test. The packets develop one specific skill in each of the communication concepts: numerality, temporality, spatial relations, identification, classification, case relationships, interrogation, and negation. The packets are designed for native Spanish speakers, grades K-3, who have certain structural problems in oral Spanish.
