Translating Mentoring Interventions Research Into Practice: Evaluation Of An Evidence-Based Workshop For Research Mentors On Developing Trainees’ Scientific Communication Skills, Erin K Dahlstrom, Christine Bell, Shine Chang, Hwa Young Lee, Cheryl B Anderson, Annie Pham, Christine Maidl Pribbenow, Carrie A Cameron

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

A key part of keeping doctoral and postdoctoral trainees in STEM research careers is mentoring. Our previous research indicates that mentoring trainees in scientific communication (SC) skill development increases research career intention through two social-cognitive constructs, self-efficacy in and outcome expectations for acquiring SC skills, as well as science identity. While many mentor training interventions exist, no programs focus on developing SC skills specifically. The "Scientific Communication Advances Research Excellence" (SCOARE) program trains mentors to address trainee scientific communication (SC) skill development as an innovative approach to increase trainee research career persistence. The SCOARE training is a half-day workshop for …

An Ethnographic Interpretation Of Latino Perspectives On Family Engagement In Education, Mary Beth Pollema Nov 2021

An Ethnographic Interpretation Of Latino Perspectives On Family Engagement In Education, Mary Beth Pollema

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

In this period of intense demographic change and educational reform that strongly emphasizes the imperative of family engagement, yet implicates minority culture parents as not being involved, it behooves the field of education to take a closer look at the rigidity that schools utilize in their normalized perceptions and practices of parental involvement. Effective involvement can consist of a number of different activities, but only a few are acknowledged in educational discourse. Therefore, it is important to hear the perspectives of families of other cultures in order to bring to light new understanding that will assist schools in building stronger …

A Comprehensive Antiracist Framework For Slhs Education: A Sample Curriculum Related To Arab American Populations, Reem Khamis-Dakwar Oct 2021

A Comprehensive Antiracist Framework For Slhs Education: A Sample Curriculum Related To Arab American Populations, Reem Khamis-Dakwar

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students in higher education programs in Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences (SLHS) experience structural racism, entering a majority white profession, while confronting social inequalities in their personal and professional communities. A vision of an antiracist decolonized antiracist curriculum enhances the integration of BIPOC students in academic programs in the field, while also facilitating the preparation of non-BIPOC students to meet the needs of a growing and diverse community of individuals with communication disorders. Such a curriculum must be comprehensively designed to include pedagogy, community-based, and research based educational activities, and to adequately prepare …

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

To be fully prepared to work within an increasingly diverse society, CSD students need to learn more about oppression, racism, equity and inclusion in addition to learning about cultural differences. In this article, a model of Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) developed as an integral part of a CSD graduate education curriculum is presented. Rooted in theoretical models including Critical Race Theory and Critical Disability Theory, the AOP curriculum includes eight modules, with each module defining relevant language, introducing concrete action step strategies, and giving students opportunities to practice these steps. Topics include forms of bias, systemic racism, oppression, cultural competence and …

A Curriculum Model For Multidisciplinary Training Of Midwife Sonographers In A Low Resource Setting, Sudhir Vinayak, Marleen Temmerman, Geert Villeirs, Sharon M. Brownie

Imaging & Diagnostic Radiology, East Africa

In many low-resource settings, less than 5% of pregnant women can access ultrasound during pregnancy. Thus, gestational age is often difficult to determine, multiple pregnancies are diagnosed late and foetal and pregnancy-related anomalies can go undetected. A pilot solution was designed beyond the traditional approach of increasing numbers of qualified radiologists, gynaecologists and sonographers. An innovative Human Resource for Health (HRH) task sharing, and maternal child health (MCH) workforce training and capacity building initiative was designed, involving development and testing of a curriculum to train midwife sonographers via a teleradiology innovation platform and a partnership between specialist radiologists, sonographers and …

Project Based Learning As A Teaching And Learning Method For Middle School Ells, Chandreyee Basu Thakur Oct 2021

Project Based Learning As A Teaching And Learning Method For Middle School Ells, Chandreyee Basu Thakur

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The rise in immigration to the United States in recent years has led to an increase in linguistic and racial diversity in schools. As a result, students with lower levels of English proficiency are often neglected in the classroom. I learned in my studies at Hamline University that the result of this is what Gloria Ladson-Billings (2006) calls the “opportunity gap.” Teaching in India for many years, I incorporated various projects to make content comprehensible. Project based learning increases participation and understanding. Through my capstone project, I wanted to create the possibility of a more active learning environment for my …

A Network Theory Approach To Curriculum Design, John O’Meara, Ashwin Vaidya Oct 2021

A Network Theory Approach To Curriculum Design, John O’Meara, Ashwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this paper we hypothesize that education, especially at the scale of curriculum, should be treated as a complex system composed of different ideas and concepts which are inherently connected. Therefore, the task of a good teacher lies in elucidating these connections and helping students make their own connections. Such a pedagogy allows students to personalize learning and strive to be ‘creative’ and make meaning out of old ideas. The novel contribution of this work lies in the mathematical approach we undertake to verify our hypothesis. We take the example of a precalculus course curriculum to make our case. We …

Making Excellent Progress In Early Reading: How Can The Identification Of Essential Skills And Concepts Help?, Dara Ramalingam, Prue Anderson, Sandra Knowles, Danielle Anzai, Greta Rollo

2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences

The ability to read and understand text is fundamental to full participation in modern adult life (Olson, 1977; Elwert, 2001). It is essential to educational progress across domains, but increased literacy levels are also linked to positive outcomes in terms of employment and health. Given its critical role both in the facilitation of learning in all domains, and in many aspects of life beyond school, it is imperative that we give students the best possible chance to develop their reading skills. This paper uses early reading as a case study for examining how the identification and explication of essential skills …

Discourses Of Diversity: A Qualitative Case Study Of World Language Pedagogies Through An Intersectional Lens, Sheri Dion

Doctoral Dissertations

Schools are becoming more linguistically and racially diverse in K-12 settings, yet there is relatively little research that explores how language teachers incorporate student and community diversities in their pedagogies. Situated at one, northeastern public secondary school in the United States, this research offers a qualitative case study of language pedagogies through an intersectional lens to investigate the mechanisms and contexts through which inequities arise. Data is collected from the following sources: teacher interviews, classroom observations, teachers’ syllabi, and student de-identified work. This study employs intersectionality (Collins & Bilge, 2016; Crenshaw, 1989, 2010) as a primary theoretical lens and critical …

Review Of Schooling Of Learners With Disabilities And The Manifestation Of The Hidden Curriculum Of Time, Theodoto Ressa

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Postsecondary outcomes remain difficult to attain despite their significance to learners with disabilities. This qualitative study investigated the impact of a hidden curriculum of time on the education of five undergraduate students with disabilities at a Carnegie Research One institution in the midwestern U.S. Participants in their quest for an education experienced a hidden curriculum of time in the form of physical impairments, educational costs of ill-health, and disability discrimination. The academic barriers participants encountered in reaching their educational goals suggest that addressing the hidden curriculum of time is essential for authentic inclusion and achievement of postsecondary education outcomes.

Race And Culturally Responsive Teaching, Sarah Whittier Apr 2021

Race And Culturally Responsive Teaching, Sarah Whittier

Community Engagement Student Work

The U.S. population is becoming more diverse with researchers projecting that minorities will be the majority by 2030. These trends are reflected within the education system; however, the racial makeup of educators and whiteness of teacher preparatory programs is not representative of the students, posing educational gaps for all and prompting researchers and educators to investigate best teaching practices. Culturally responsive teaching is a teaching practice in which the educator is aware of the different cultures and identities within and outside of their classroom, incorporates diversity into the curriculum, and challenges Eurocentric values being upheld by traditional education models. Despite …

One Size Does Not Fit All: Addressing Adolescents’ Needs For Historically And Culturally Responsive English Language Arts Curriculum, Angela Mckellar

Masters Projects

In recent years, education initiatives have aimed to link school and teacher effectiveness to secondary students’ performance on standardized testing. Consequently, many schools have adapted curriculum to prepare students for the test. As a result, many publishers have filled a need by providing packaged or scripted curriculum seeking to streamline the education process. This project explores the ways in which English Language Arts (ELA) standardized curriculum influences secondary students’ motivation and teachers’ autonomy. An effective ELA curriculum must meet the diverse needs of all students and allow for teacher autonomy to modify curriculum when and where needed. To meet adolescent …

Raising The Awareness Of Somali Families: The Positive Impact Of Dual Language Education On Student Success, Khaleef Warsame

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Studies have found that dual language education is powerful for all learners and particularly essential for the success of first- and second-generation immigrant learners in the United States. The learning model enhances students’ academic achievement, school participation, and healthy identity development. Students proficient in both their heritage language and culture and their new homeland’s dominant culture and language are also more likely to gain higher upward mobility and enjoy advanced cognitive development. While the benefits of dual language education (DLE) are explicitly illustrated in the literature, there are currently no Somali dual language programs found to be existing in Minnesota …

Speaking Music: A Historical Study Of Edwin Gordon's Music Learning Theory, David M. Alfred Jan 2021

Speaking Music: A Historical Study Of Edwin Gordon's Music Learning Theory, David M. Alfred

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Music Learning Theory, conceived, researched, and developed by Dr. Edwin Elias Gordan, has been on the periphery of music education for decades and is the only extant comprehensive theoretical framework that fully addresses the development of music literacy from early childhood through maturity. The concurrent research gap suggests that a Fordist approach may exist throughout music education – one that insists upon behavioral goals, direct instruction, and educational, artistic, and ideological exclusivity. This historical study elucidates Gordan’s work in order to understand the stages and processes that are like spokes of a wheel between his idea of audiation at the …

(Re)Imagining Community-Engaged Curriculum And Pedagogy: Shifting Subjectivities And Power/Knowledge Among Faculty/Doctoral Students, Anne Catherine Kelly Jan 2021

(Re)Imagining Community-Engaged Curriculum And Pedagogy: Shifting Subjectivities And Power/Knowledge Among Faculty/Doctoral Students, Anne Catherine Kelly

Dissertations

This dissertation explores new possibilities for researching and representing community-engaged curriculum and pedagogical practices among faculty and their doctoral students. Community-engagement is (re)imagined within nonfiction-fiction writing to provide a line of inquiry that integrates data and theory (Jackson & Mazzei, 2017). I probe, question, and disrupt stable notions of engaged teaching-learning and research. Foucauldian concept of power/knowledge is used to interrogate faculty/doctoral students’ shifting subjectivities and discursive construction of community-engagement. Post qualitative inquiry provides a methodological lens to (re)consider new ways of framing community-engagement and acknowledges the crisis of representing research as it is always partial and incomplete. Through the …
