Premises, Promises, And A Piece Of Pie: A Social Analysis Of Art In General Education, Tom Anderson Jan 1992

Premises, Promises, And A Piece Of Pie: A Social Analysis Of Art In General Education, Tom Anderson

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

It is argued that advocates of content-based art education and other art educators who are attempting to move art to the political center of general education are struggling against largely unrecognized social realities. The idea is developed that just as the art world occupies a marginal place in the larger society do does art education in the society's educational institutions. The roots of this marginalization are argued to be in contending; particularly the dearly held notions of creativity and originality which are at the heart of the art world, versus acquiescence and conformity which are held most dear within general …

Balloons : A Holistic Unit, Nora Lynn Schattke

Honors Capstones

My goal for this thesis was to create a unit which utilized the holistic approach of instruction so often advocated in my methods classes. I chose to do a unit using balloons as a theme. This unit could be used by almost any elementary grade level teacher, even a beginning teacher. The teacher could chooseto utilize any or all of the unit. With more schools moving towards a whole language or thematic approach to learning, this holistic unit could become a valuable resource. My methods for developing this unit included brainstorming, research and finally writing all my ideas out on …

Service-Learning Advances School Improvement: A Position Paper From The International Service Learning Initiative, Barbara Gomez Jan 1990

Service-Learning Advances School Improvement: A Position Paper From The International Service Learning Initiative, Barbara Gomez

Special Topics, General

The base on which the United States is built is participatory democracy -achieved only when all citizens are included in choice and decision-making. Nothing could be worse for our nation than to have our children feel alienated from the communities in which they attend school. For more than 200 years the rest of the world has been watching our progress, and as we have succeeded they have made efforts to emulate our sense of individual freedom and collective responsibility for governance.

A high percentage of students in a second grade class with low socio-economic characteristics demonstrated exceptionally low achievement in social studies. The problem was addressed by the implementation of an interdisciplinary program to increase basic skills in all areas of the curriculum. Activities designed to increase the target group's understanding of social studies concepts while practicing skills in reading, language arts, math, and science were incorporated into all subject areas utilizing a whole language approach. An emphasis on critical thinking and daily news events allowed for student growth in inferential comprehension and the formation of attitudes about the world. The …
