Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

Ossabaw Island is a Georgia barrier island, accessible solely by boat and protected from development through a public-private partnership between a foundation and the state. This site has the potential to serve as a primary resource for inspiration, education, and lifelong learning. Our study illuminates how one pre-service teacher (PST) and six teacher educators (TEs) experienced an immersive site visit to this local learning environment. We highlight the importance of experiencing places first-hand and using sources (e.g., oral histories) to make content connections. Additionally, the immersive site visit experience allowed us to collaboratively brainstorm place-based curricular units.

Palette Of Perspective: Designing An Inclusive Art History Curriculum, Amy Bettencourt Oct 2024

Palette Of Perspective: Designing An Inclusive Art History Curriculum, Amy Bettencourt

Theses

This project aims to develop an inclusive art history curriculum as a high school level course, addressing the traditional Western-centric focus that has been marginalized non-Western contributions. By pairing Western and non-Western artworks within a chronological framework, students can compare artistic expressions across cultures, emphasizing parallel histories rather than a single Eurocentric narrative. The curriculum employs diverse interpretive methodologies to foster critical thinking and challenge conventional narrative. Designed for a 20-week semester, it focuses on a smaller number of key artworks per unit to encourage meaningful engagement and projects. While still rooted in Western art, the course connects global artistic …

Competency-Based Grading: Fostering Deeper And More Authentic Student Learning, Ryan Deslauriers Oct 2024

Competency-Based Grading: Fostering Deeper And More Authentic Student Learning, Ryan Deslauriers

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Models of student learning and assessment have evolved dramatically since the systemization of learning in post-Renaissance Europe and its colonies. The recent emergence and challenges of a competency-based learning model have led many school districts in the United States to begin implementing a grading system more closely aligned with this novel model of learning. This capstone first considers the deficiencies in both traditional and standards-based grading systems to ultimately answer the primary question, How can competency-based grading foster deeper and more authentic student learning experiences? A review of the existing literature concludes that the implementation of a competency-based grading system …

A Non-Formal Environmental Education Curriculum Using Raptor Ambassadors To Foster Meaningful Relationships Between Diverse Learners Of All Ages And The More-Than-Human World, Danial Davis Oct 2024

A Non-Formal Environmental Education Curriculum Using Raptor Ambassadors To Foster Meaningful Relationships Between Diverse Learners Of All Ages And The More-Than-Human World, Danial Davis

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

This capstone project aimed to create an all ages non-formal environmental education curriculum that intentionally fostered connections between Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) and environmental education and between students of all cultures and the more-than-human world. Research suggested that BIPOC were underrepresented in environmental education programs because many programs were grounded in cultural narratives that overlooked BIPOC perspectives and epistemologies, an injustice known as “ontological distance.” The author’s experience as an educator at The Raptor Center suggested that ambassador raptors such as red-tailed hawks offered highly-engaging subjects for non-formal environmental education activities, particularly for lessons attempting new or …

Public History In The Middle School Classroom, Victoria L. Sanchez Oct 2024

Public History In The Middle School Classroom, Victoria L. Sanchez

Capstone Projects

This project was inspired by my own experience as a middle school classroom teacher and seeks to highlight the crossover between public history pedagogies and middle school social studies instruction. The project’s main focus lies on providing social studies educators with resources to learn about, teach, and integrate classroom projects that draw on public history pedagogies and methods. I created the public PHxMS website to achieve this goal. The intended impact of this site, upon being shared with educators, is to increase awareness about and interest in the field of public history, provide a resource for educators who might be …

Social Media, Technology, And The Higher Education Classroom, Brian F. Mcfadden, Nicole R. Clarity, Susan J. Drucker

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

This paper reflects on the ways that media technology infiltrate, push, and pull educators in the 21st century. The authors write about the importance of including new technology in our courses to better prepare students for their future careers and lives while also acknowledging the challenges that inclusion can present. By highlighting how technology serves as a facilitator for classroom participation and the ways the emergent technology can enhance a journalism curriculum, the paper points to some of the ways that emergent technology in our classes can have an enduring positive effect on our students in the future. However, …

Climate Change Education For Student Agency, Katie Kirschbaum Jul 2024

Climate Change Education For Student Agency, Katie Kirschbaum

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

While there is no single solution to climate change, climate change education has been identified as a key component. This capstone paper and the unit plan developed for this capstone project seek to answer the research question: How can a biology curriculum that incorporates climate change science, impacts, and solutions foster a global citizenship mindset and pro-environmental behaviors in high school students? The literature review covers dimensions of global citizenship, defines climate change education, identifies what influences pro-environmental behavior, and discusses adolescent development as it relates to pro-environmental behavior. The resulting ten-lesson unit plan is designed for high school teachers …

What Are Rural Minnesota Elementary Teachers’ Views Regarding Their Preparedness To Teach Environmental Education, Benjamin Odegaard

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Odegaard, B. (2024). What are rural Minnesota elementary teachers’ views regarding their preparedness to teach environmental education. Research has been done on how environmental education (EE) is a positive for students, but not a lot of research has been done on how well the teachers understand EE. Specifically there has been little to no research on rural Minnesota elementary teachers. This thesis takes a look at how well prepared these teachers think they are when it comes to teaching EE in their classrooms. A survey was made using a mixed methods approach. Most of the questions in the survey consisted …

The American View On Global Education In Curriculum And Its Necessity For Entering The Workforce, Alison Taylor Mar 2024

The American View On Global Education In Curriculum And Its Necessity For Entering The Workforce, Alison Taylor

Student Theses and Dissertations

The problem addressed in this study is the lack of globalization terminology and geography standards included in the United States’ public education system leading to a workforce that is missing key 21st century skill competency. According to social efficiency theory, it is important for education to teach the necessary employability skills in the school curriculum. Geography standards align with employability skills, but the subject is disappearing from United States classrooms. This quantitative regression study evaluates the predictive relationships between exposure to geography curriculum in the United States, American perception of the importance of geography, and recent high school graduate’s self-assessed …

Curricula As Ideology: A Study Of Cultural Representations In Arabic As A Foreign Language (Afl) Textbooks, Zakaria Fahmi Mar 2024

Curricula As Ideology: A Study Of Cultural Representations In Arabic As A Foreign Language (Afl) Textbooks, Zakaria Fahmi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study examines cultural representations in two widely used AFL textbook series, namely Al-Kitaab and Arabiyyat al-Naas. Fundamentally, three main issues motivate this study: (1) the cultural politics of language textbooks underlying the construction and dissemination of cultural knowledge and its prioritization of the latter on grounds of subjectivity, ideology, and power, (2) the politicization of Arabic as a foreign language (AFL) in light of the post 9/11 language advocacy, and (3) the prevailing standard language ideology of al-Arabiya al-fuṣħaa (العربية الفصحى) and the pedagogical challenges posed by Arabic diglossia. The data comprise five textbooks from the aforementioned series, …

“It Ain’T Gonna Be My History”: Collaborative Meaning-Making To Advance Curricular Sovereignty With(In) Rural, Indigenous-Serving Schools, Amanda Leclair-Diaz, Christine Stanton Feb 2024

“It Ain’T Gonna Be My History”: Collaborative Meaning-Making To Advance Curricular Sovereignty With(In) Rural, Indigenous-Serving Schools, Amanda Leclair-Diaz, Christine Stanton

The Rural Educator

This article describes storywork and collaborative meaning making as relational practices that can support stakeholder learning about curricular sovereignty with(in) rural Indigenous-serving school districts. While various treaties and policies exist to protect the educational interests of Indigenous Nations, enacting curricular sovereignty often demands extensive resources that are limited in many rural reservation and reservation bordertown contexts. The authors, who have a long-standing relationship as co-learners, exchange stories about their experiences as an Indigenous student and non-Indigenous educator within such contexts, and then engage in collaborative meaning making to think more deeply about these experiences as curriculum decision makers and scholars. …

Beginnings: Nsw Teachers' Views On The Early Stages Of Implementing A New National Curriculum, Julie-Anne Seach Jan 2024

Beginnings: Nsw Teachers' Views On The Early Stages Of Implementing A New National Curriculum, Julie-Anne Seach

Theses

This PhD study researched NSW teachers’ conceptions of curriculum change after the introduction of a new Australian national curriculum. One key rationale for the development of a national curriculum in Australia was to raise the standard of education by providing excellent curriculum to students in all Australian states and territories. However, educational standards improve through a combination of many factors, including quality teaching.

A curriculum’s success is dependent on the teachers who implement it. While the curriculum itself garnered considerable attention, how classroom teachers responded to it was likely to be a contributing factor to its overall success. Yet, there …

Inclusion Of Curriculum In Higher Education Targeting Stigma For Working With Stigmatized Populations, Caitlin Nash Jan 2024

Inclusion Of Curriculum In Higher Education Targeting Stigma For Working With Stigmatized Populations, Caitlin Nash

A thorough examination of international research, in combination with a detailed review of the primary Science and Mathematics curricula in Ireland, Latvia, Sweden, and the Netherlands, is undertaken to …

Course Design As Critical Creativity: Intersectional, Regional, And Demographic Approaches To Teaching Asian American Literatures, Thomas X. Sarmiento Dec 2023

Course Design As Critical Creativity: Intersectional, Regional, And Demographic Approaches To Teaching Asian American Literatures, Thomas X. Sarmiento

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This essay offers a theoretical and reflective exploration of critically informed acts of creativity expressed in my course design for and teaching of Asian American literatures at a predominantly white, public land-grant, Midwestern university. I argue that teaching is both a creative and critical activity as it generates new ways of knowing and being through an assessment and curation of extant literary texts and scholarly discourses. Given my geographic, scholarly, and personal orientations, my course features intersectional, regional, and ethnically diverse perspectives that aim to queer what “Asian America/n” signifies. I hope my situated pedagogical insights inspire other scholar-teachers to …

Living Among Wildlife: Elevating Human-Wildlife Interactions And Coexistence, Bridget Rebecca Murphy Dec 2023

Living Among Wildlife: Elevating Human-Wildlife Interactions And Coexistence, Bridget Rebecca Murphy

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

After a semester of learning, both in class and in nature, my writing honed in further on this human-nature divide. To me, I see humans as part of nature – as we are mammals, animals, part of the food chain, biological beings no higher than others on our planet. We have simply constructed this false narrative around us within our societies, minds and media that embeds this division between us and nature, between us and wildlife. Humans have been managing, stewarding, living off and within landscapes for thousands of years. As time and technology evolved, a lot of people began …

The primary aim of this study is to underscore the imperative need …

Lack Of Multicultural Representation In Children’S Literature And Societal Attitudes On Youths’ Self-Perception, Ellen Knutson Aug 2023

Lack Of Multicultural Representation In Children’S Literature And Societal Attitudes On Youths’ Self-Perception, Ellen Knutson

Counselor Education Capstones

This Capstone Project addresses the use of multicultural representation in children’s literature, with particular relevance to educational resources and curriculum. Likewise, there is consideration of the impact of societal attitudes towards multicultural education and acts of inclusivity on the implementation of such ideas. Societal attitudes mentioned include state legislature and literature censorship. The implementation of multicultural education would inherently represent larger numbers of underrepresented communities and individuals, which would then be included in the classroom. This Capstone looks to understand the potential impact of thorough implementation of multicultural education and inclusive, representative literature for youth.

England’S Early Years Foundation Stage (Eyfs) Framework: Towards A Minor Literature, Claire Walsh Jun 2023

England’S Early Years Foundation Stage (Eyfs) Framework: Towards A Minor Literature, Claire Walsh

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

In the mid 1970s, the philosopher Gilles Deleuze and psychoanalyst Felix Guattari radically conceptualised the novelist Kafka in terms of marginal subjectivity. Their book, “Kafka: towards a minor literature” (1975/1986) was a consideration of minor thought as “an agent of transformative experimentation and collective awareness” (El Moncef, 2020) within a major language. Considering such agency, this paper, nearly fifty years on from Kafka, looks to extend our gaze beyond Deleuze and Guattari’s original theory towards ‘the people [who] are missing’ (Deleuze, 1989) - the minor readers. Evolving the concept of the marginal, the paper considers the major language of statutory …

This study sought to measure student improvement using the rubric either with or without a linked 25-minute training session.

METHODS: Randomized Controlled Trial. The authors tested the hypothesis that a 25-minute training session combined with use of a rubric would lead to higher scores than a brief explanation of this rubric alone. All 72 participating second-year …

Nature’S Classroom: Designing A Practical Environmental Education Curriculum, Kendra Karwacki Apr 2023

Nature’S Classroom: Designing A Practical Environmental Education Curriculum, Kendra Karwacki

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The world is currently facing a plethora of environmental catastrophes, and environmental education is a crucial tool for addressing this crisis. Environmental education (EE) programs, when included in formal primary schools, have been shown to create positive environmental changes and improve students’ academic performance, social-emotional learning, and physical health. However, teachers often face various barriers that impede their ability to implement EE programs in schools. This capstone combines three models for EE - place-based education, nature journaling, and community partnerships to address these barriers. The research question driving this project is: What factors do informal educators need to consider when …

Permaculture Curriculum For Public School Children In The United States, Nichole Ross Apr 2023

Permaculture Curriculum For Public School Children In The United States, Nichole Ross
