Even though gender diversity of characters has increased in television shows and films, this study hypothesized that female characters who are presented as feminist icons function as feminist backlash and perpetuate negative and harmful stereotypes. This was found to be especially true for career-focused women. Applying a cultural studies approach to reading television and film studies through a feminist lens identified the antifeminist factors that continue to cause the perpetual loop of independent women reverting to dated social roles. Patronage-clientelism is a current and important topic of discussion among the anthropological and missiological community. The effects of unintended patronage by Western missionaries in the context of Thai culture, however, are underexplored in academic research. In this study, I analyzed the effects of unintentional patronage among Western missionaries in a Thai cross-cultural ministry context. To do this I utilized a multiple case study method in which I compared four cases and analyzed for examples of how unintentional patronage is generated. Data from 790 older school-age (Mage = 10.2 years, SD = 1.2 years) girls (N = 427) and boys from Barranquilla, Colombia (N = 449) and Montréal, Canada (N = 331) were used to replicate findings reported by Valdivia et al. (2005). This prior study revealed contextual variations in the association between two measures of social behavior, specifically aggression and withdrawal, and two measures of effective functioning with peers, specifically sociometric preference and friendship. The Montréal participants were primarily from families with European backgrounds. The ethnicity of the participants from Barranquilla can be described as Latinx/Caribbean. Film scholarship has primarily focused on the constructions of identities by examining the exhibited film product. The screenplay, which forms the foundation of the film text, is rarely examined for its impact on issues of representation and self-representation. Following a review of the development of the culture concept, this interpretivist, epistemologically critical realist, dissertation introduces intercultural adaptive frameshifting from the intercultural communication literature. To assess whether culture has effect within an epistemic community, four frameworks are evaluated within a non-IR field (global Christian reasoning). Chinese netizens mobilized human flesh searches (HFS), or cyber vigilantism, to reduce the risks posed by international travelers who might import the H1N1 flu virus into China. Ugandan adolescents (n = 202, 54% girls; M_age = 14.26) answered closed- and open-ended questions about the gender composition of friends and attitudes about, and activities with, same- and other-gender peers and friends. Adolescents’ friendships were somewhat gender segregated, although other-gender friendships were present. Positive attitudes about same- and other-gender peers and friends were prevalent. Girls and boys displayed similar attitudes about same- and other-gender peers, with the exception of boys reporting more positive attitudes toward boys. The bacterium that causes syphilis, Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum, has now been cultured in vitro continuously for periods exceeding 3 years using a system consisting of coculture with Sf1Ep rabbit epithelial cells in TpCM-2 medium and a low-oxygen environment. In addition, long-term culture of several other syphilis isolates (SS14, Mexico A, UW231B, and UW249B) and the T. pallidum subsp. endemicum Bosnia A strain has been achieved. During in vitro passage, T. pallidum subsp. pallidum exhibited a typical bacterial growth curve with logarithmic and stationary phases. This qualitative study focuses on the adoption of learner-centeredness in the English language classroom, and whether it is mediated by culture. With the use of observations, and interviews, and using a socio-cultural framework, this investigation examines primary school teachers’ perceptions of learner-centered teaching, how they implement that teaching in the classroom and how this is negotiated by culture. Students’ perceptions of their learning are also reflected upon. The research findings reveal that most teachers were able to demonstrate aspects of learnercentered teaching; however, they were not proficient in explaining theory.
