When Professional And Personal Values Collide: A Thematic Analysis Of Counseling Students' Developmental Journey Through An Ethics Course, Patricia Kimball

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Ethical practice is a foundational value in the profession of counseling. Ethics education is provided throughout graduate school and considered mandatory in most states to maintain a license. Even with this emphasis on ethics education, violations continue, putting the welfare of clients, communities, the profession and the counselor in jeopardy. One complicating factor in ethics is the difficulty found in addressing values, beliefs, and attitudes during graduate programs. These student dispositions are even more complex to address when values lie at the core of ethical dilemmas. This study examines the writings of master’s level counseling students at the end of …

Affirmative Client Care: Reconciling Evidence-Based Practices Within Humanistic Engagement, Harvey C. Peters, Michele Rivas

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Contemporary trends in mental health have furthered the counseling profession’s adherence to scientifically-based practices while grounded in core humanistic values. This has created philosophical and clinical tensions, especially for counselors adhering to a humanistic philosophy. Despite the documented pressures, there is a gap in the literature addressing how professional counselors can navigate the integration of evidence-based practices into humanism. This manuscript offers an affirmative stance on the navigation of these tensions through the use of a case discussion and actionable suggestions.

Similarly, examination of the students’ course (teaching) evaluations did not reveal any significant difference in mean course ratings between the on-campus and online learning versions of the course.

An Emerging Theory Of Perceived Disability Counseling Competence: A Qualitative Investigation Of Licensed Professional Counselors, Michele Rivas

Dissertations - ALL

Clients with disabilities engage in counseling services in a variety of settings. Given the counseling profession’s emphasis in social responsiveness to multicultural issues and social justice, professional counselors are equipped with training and clinical experience that prepare them to meet these clients’ counseling needs. The counseling literature highlights the pervasive absence of disability across counselor curriculum and the training paucities in counselor preparation to work with clients with disabilities. This qualitative study utilized the grounded theory tradition to illuminate the categories, properties, and dimensions involved in licensed professional counselors’ perceptions of their development of disability counseling competence. This study involved …

Recruiting Undergraduate Students: Creating A Path To The Counseling Profession, Jake J. Protivnak, Jennifer F. Yensel

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Counselor educators must find ways to encourage undergraduate students to choose to pursue a graduate degree in counseling. Related helping professions (e.g., psychology, social work) may have a recruitment advantage. Faculty in disciplines with both undergraduate and graduate programs can encourage high achieving undergraduate students to continue into graduate programs within their discipline. Due to the lack of a discipline specific academic pathway and an undergraduate advising system directing students into counseling graduate programs, counselor educators must find innovative ways to recruit undergraduate students. The authors will discuss the issues involved in recruiting undergraduate students, present a framework for sharing …
