The Development And Exploratory Validation Of The Awareness Of Social Justice For Individuals With Disabilities Scale, Daniel J. Kelsey May 2012

The Development And Exploratory Validation Of The Awareness Of Social Justice For Individuals With Disabilities Scale, Daniel J. Kelsey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Individuals with disabilities (IWDs) continue to experience stigma, prejudice, and discrimination that result in social injustice. Counselors of all specialties and theoretic orientations provide services to IWDs. However, there is little discussion about disability-related social justice in the counseling and psychology literature. Counselors, psychology professionals, rehabilitation counselors, and society as a whole, must first be aware of the social injustices that IWDs experience and the role that society has in maintaining them; otherwise, counselors risk perpetuating these social injustices. However, there are no instruments that measure the awareness of social justice issues as they relate to IWDs. By creating and …

The Importance Of Early Counseling And Education Of Persons Diagnosed With Alzheimer's Disease And Their Caregivers, Haley Pottorff Basnett

Research Papers

When people are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, they go through periods of depression simply because the prognosis is eventual and certain death. By the same token, many healthcare professionals and insurance companies with whom individuals and their families must deal take an often cold approach to the diagnosis, considering counseling as a waste of time for a situation in which a physical prognosis is hopeless. In treating the physical aspect of the disease, many doctors do in fact prescribe an antidepressant, which ironically, will exacerbate the physical condition of the person affected, hastening the physical decline. Therefore, while the ultimate tragedy …

The Role Of Religion And Spirituality In Counseling, Tiffany Nickles Jun 2011

The Role Of Religion And Spirituality In Counseling, Tiffany Nickles

Psychology and Child Development

While the 20th century has simultaneously brought about a growth in counseling and a reemergence of secularism, counseling in the 21st century has focused its attention on interventions that are sensitive to multicultural facets in clients’ lives. As professionals increasingly embrace multicultural competency in counseling and therapy, religion and spirituality arguably stand out as cultural and personal factors that are a salient part of framing one’s experiences, beliefs, values, behavior, and illness patterns. Despite the growing understanding of the pervasiveness and importance of spirituality and religion, most psychologists have little training in dealing with religious and spiritual issues. …

Training Experiences And Feelings Of Competency In Utilizing Multicultural Counseling Guidelines., Lauren Rae Krug

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Awareness of changing demographics in the United States has resulted in psychologists paying greater attention to multicultural issues. As a result, in 1993, the APA adopted a set of guidelines, the “Guidelines for Providers of Psychological Services to Ethnic, Linguistic, and Culturally Diverse Populations,” directed to all areas of practice. This document consists of a set of forty brief, action-oriented recommendations. Despite frequent calls for multicultural guidelines and increased attention to multicultural issues, no research has evaluated the use of these guidelines in the context of the treatment setting or examined the impact of training on the incorporation of the …

This study investigated whether clients of different genders perceive the counselor differently when they work with a counselor whose therapeutic interventions correspond with the client's learning style. The sample consisted of 380 undergraduate students from universities in three geographical regions of the country. Participants were randomly assigned to groups based on learning style and gender. The Tripartite Model Of Rehabilitation Intervention: Basics, Goals And Rehabilitation Strategies, Hanoch Livneh

Rehabilitation, or tertiary intervention, can be viewed as addressing specific goals as they relate to diverse functional limitations. The three phases, or components, of rehabilitation intervention discussed include: (a) disability minimization in an effort to reduce its impact upon life activities; (b) skill development, as an attempt to compensate for limitations imposed by permanent losses; and (c) environmental manipulation to promote physical and social-attitudinal accessibility. The paper concludes with discussion of the model's applicability to the field of rehabilitation counseling.

The importance for therapists and researchers to consider and employ client's values as a part of therapeutic endeavors is discussed. A client's specific values are proffered as identifying them as part of a subculture (e.g. members of a church) as …
