Effect Of Delays In Processing On The Survival Of Mycobacterium Avium-M. Intracellulare In The Isolator Blood Culture System., C. Fordham Von Reyn, Stephen Hennigan, Sandra Niemczyk, Nicholas J. Jacobs

Dartmouth Scholarship

Concentrations of Mycobacterium avium-M. intracellulare ranging from 10(-1) to 10(3) CFU/ml were added to blood, placed in Isolator tubes, and held at room temperature for intervals ranging from 4 h to 56 days before being processed (centrifugation and culture on Middlebrook 7H10 agar). At all concentrations tested, M. avium-M. intracellulare was recovered after hold times ranging from 4 h to 7 days; the number of final CFU actually increased progressively for hold times of 8 h or more. Hold times of up to 7 days did not increase the time from processing to the first appearance of visible colonies. At …

Africa's Conservation For Development, Norman Miller, Rodger Yeager Jan 1987

Africa's Conservation For Development, Norman Miller, Rodger Yeager

Dartmouth Scholarship

Africa's modern dilemma is a "floor of life" issue. Resource loss, environmental degredation, and overpopulation have reduced many people to the lowest subsistence levels in living memory. By all accounts a biologically diverse wonderland, Africa is quite literally the last place on earth for many plant and animal species. Yet the basis of human and nonhuman survival has become threatened in many areas because of soil and water depletion, deforestation, and desertification. Human mistakes are invariably cited as among the basic causes of these tragedies.

Striving For Common Ground: Humane And Scientific Considerations In Contemporary Wildlife Management, Stephen R. Kellert Jan 1982

Striving For Common Ground: Humane And Scientific Considerations In Contemporary Wildlife Management, Stephen R. Kellert

Nature Collection

Although there is a diversity of opinion about how to view the relationship between humans and wildlife, recent political pressures from the current administration make it mandatory that these diverse groups coalesce to use their combined leverage to halt the planned incursions into the remaining habitats of wildlife. It is also important to begin to see nature as a complex and interrelated whole, and to respect the integrity of that whole, rather than simply select individual species for affection and protection.

Journey In A Forgotten Land - Part 1: Food And Drought In Ethiopian/Kenyan Border Lands, Norman Miller Dec 1974

Journey In A Forgotten Land - Part 1: Food And Drought In Ethiopian/Kenyan Border Lands, Norman Miller

Dartmouth Scholarship

The herding peoples who live in the border areas of Kenya and Ethiopia share a common complaint. They believe themselves to be a forgotten people, unknown and unwanted in the capitals of Addis Ababa and Nairobi. This is not entirely true, but the remote, inhospitable nature of their land supports the belief that they are indeed untouched by the outside world. The majority of the people on both sides of the border are Boran, or their near cousins the Gabbra. They are traditionally pastoralists who move with their cattle, camels, sheep, and goats over vast areas of this dry land. …
