Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

Interprofessional education (IPE) is defined by AOTA (2015) as an “occasion by which students from two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to improve collaboration and quality of care”. IPE is closely related to and often overlaps with interprofessional collaboration (IPC) within healthcare settings. IPC “occurs when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, [caregivers], and communities to deliver the highest quality of care” (World Health Organization [WHO], 2010, p. 7). Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

To improve economic opportunity in Cambodia, we used social cognitive theory to develop gamified, interactive narratives using mobile phones. Participants guided their chosen character toward their “dream job” goal while encountering a series of barriers along the way. Participants (N = 1,625) were randomly assigned to one of four message frequency experimental conditions: a no-play control condition or playing the interactive narrative one, two, or five times. Compared with not playing the interactive narrative (control), those who played showed higher perceived self-efficacy, response efficacy, and behavioral intentions. Playing more times was associated with less attentional focus and enjoyment, but greater …

Body movement and expression are essential during face-to-face communication, but written language lacks such context clues. Additionally, the hard of hearing may not fully …

Studying the effects of evolving personal technology helps researchers understand both the detriments of widespread adoption and the benefits that accompany the technology. One such area of concern is the relationship of technology with loneliness. Emerging adulthood is described as the period of transition from adolescence to adulthood, taking place from age 18–25. This period is characterized by change, exploration, but also a vulnerability to psychological distress. Young adults are not only at greater risk of loneliness …

While overall survival has improved significantly for children with cancer over the past 75 years, cancer remains the leading cause of death from disease among children and adolescents. Further, despite the many advances in medical and nursing care, children with cancer still experience significant physical and emotional suffering over the course of their illness, especially at the end of life (EOL). Children endure significant rates of high-intensity medical interventions (e.g., intubation, intensive care unit admission) at the EOL despite many parents, adolescents, and young adult patients identifying home as their preferred location of death. Hospice care has the potential to …

The State Of Missed Nursing Care In A Telemetry Nursing Unit: A Descriptive Case Study, Ann Marie Svolos Oct 2021

The State Of Missed Nursing Care In A Telemetry Nursing Unit: A Descriptive Case Study, Ann Marie Svolos

Missed nursing care in the acute hospital setting is care left undone. Omitted, missing and even rationed care, are not new concepts in nursing practice. However, in 2006 Dr. Beatrice Kalisch formally identified the type of care that is regularly missed in acute general hospital units and the reasons missed nursing care occurs. Missed nursing care is a problem for nursing and healthcare because it may lead to negative patient and staff outcomes which may result in harm. The purpose of the research was to understand missed nursing care from a telemetry nurse's perspective to learn how it continues to …

A Quality Improvement Project To Assess Anxiety Of Family Members Who Receive Standard Communication During The Intraoperative Period, Ashlie E. Sinclair

Dissertations

Introduction: The waiting period for surgical patients' family members can be stressful, causing increased frustration and fear. Most patients and families do not regularly experience the surgical environment in the same way that the operating room (OR) staff do, making this area unfamiliar. If there are inconsistent and insufficient information provided to the family, anxiety levels may increase. It is essential that staff attend to family members' needs while the patient is in surgery. The evidence is overwhelming that structured patient status updates to family members and varying waiting room techniques are critical in decreasing their anxiety.

Methods: This quality …
