Family Strengths Among Black Families In Alaska: A Case Study, Washington W. Brown Jr. Feb 1991

Family Strengths Among Black Families In Alaska: A Case Study, Washington W. Brown Jr.

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The idea of a strong family is a very subjective concept. A strength, according to one set of criteria, could easily be interpreted as a weakness according to another set of criteria--and vice-versa. Most scholars of the family would agree that a strong bond of affection between family members is usually an asset. But if this affection is manifested in extremely dependent and stifling relationships among family members, such a bond would generally be characterized as a "pathological" liability.

The family has traditionally provided the foundation for society, and, though in contemporary America some of its functions have been absorbed …

Phonological Profile For The Hearing Impaired : Manual, Iris Vardi

Research outputs pre 2011

Anyone who deals with the speech of the hearing impaired is only too well aware of the wide range of speech problems that can present. Many of these problems have been thoroughly researched and documented. Toni Gold (1980), detailed the following characteristics of hearing impaired speech as revealed by the literature to that date:

(l) intelligibility problems;

(2) consonant errors relating to voicing, consonant omissions, position of consonant error in word, difficulties with consonant blends, effects of place of articulation;

(3) vowel and diphthong errors;

(4) suprasegmental errors including problems with rate, increased duration of phonemes, timing, pausing; and

(5) …

Improving Active Parent Involvement For Preschool Teachers And Parents Through In-Service Training, Robin M. Irving Jan 1991

Improving Active Parent Involvement For Preschool Teachers And Parents Through In-Service Training, Robin M. Irving

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This practicum was designed to provide information and support for preschool teachers to help parents in teaching an active role to parenting. The primary goal was that there would be more active parent involvement between parents and children ages three to five years. The literature indicated that training sessions to provide information and support to teachers and parents could be successful in teaching an active role to parenting. Because the center parents were responsible parents, seeking advice to help in teaching their children, the community preschool teachers were supportive of the center's program and staff, and had requested parent education …

Our Meanings Can Never Be The Same: Reflections On Language And Law, James Boyd White Jan 1991

Our Meanings Can Never Be The Same: Reflections On Language And Law, James Boyd White

Articles

For me it is a starting point in all thought about language that, whatever I say or do with words, my expression will never mean exactly the same thing to you that it does to me; and of course yours will never mean exactly the same thing to me that it does to you. It cannot: each act of expression is a gesture against a context; it derives its meaning largely. perhaps entirely, from its relation to that context; and for each of us the context of every gesture is different, if only because one of us is doing it, …

Variables Affecting Attendance At And Radio Listenership To Minor League Baseball Games, David C. Ogden May 1990

Variables Affecting Attendance At And Radio Listenership To Minor League Baseball Games, David C. Ogden

Student Work

Variables, including age, sex, group accompaniment, extracurricular activities and "likes" and "dislikes" about experiences at games, were investigated for their relationship to attendance at Omaha Royals games and to listenership to Royals on radio. The results of a survey of spectators (N=333) at 11 Royals games show a difference in frequency of attendance among age groups and a difference in frequency of listenership between the sexes. Those over age 55 appear to attend games more often (p<.01) and female listeners tune in Royals games more frequently than males who listen to Omaha Royals radio (p<.05). Such findings support the contentions of Lee and Zeiss (1980) that age does make a difference in the amount of sports consumption, and that females may adopt sports consumer roles as readily as males. The study also indicates baseball's importance as a forum for socialization among family members and as a mechanism for exploring communication components of the sports subculture (Donnelly, 1972) and their marketing implications.

Examining Environmental Advertising Imagery Through Art Education, Tom Anderson Jan 1990

Examining Environmental Advertising Imagery Through Art Education, Tom Anderson

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This is an examination of advertising imagery in the United States, with particular emphasis on outdoor advertising, and a proposal for an art curriculum focused on advertising awareness. The method is socially-oriented art criticism funded by some history of advertising and the psychology and philosophy of persuasive, manipulative, and pecuniary symbolism. The intent is first to decode the aesthetic environment (Barbosa, 1988) and then present a structure that helps art students to do the same. The examination begins with the object and returns to the object for validation (Ecker and Kaelin, 1970), but "ends with an understanding of personal experience, …

Negotiation Pedagogy As Communication Methodology Focused On Conditionality And Recursivity In Third-Order Coupling, Eroca Gabriel May 1989

Negotiation Pedagogy As Communication Methodology Focused On Conditionality And Recursivity In Third-Order Coupling, Eroca Gabriel

Student Work

This study is not a prescribed method of communication techniques for learning how to negotiate. It is not designed to teach the reader various and sundry negotiation strategies or tactics. Neither is this a study in East Indian communication theory or cross-cultural communication. The result of this study is a negotiation pedagogy as communication methodology—a distinctly heuristic design intended to lead the student of negotiation to discover his/her own capacities for negotiating. In the broad realm of negotiation, this study serves to introduce a new approach—actually a meta-approach to negotiating— that provides a systematic means whereby students can direct themselves …
