How Underlying Patient Beliefs Can Affect Physician-Patient Communicaion About Prostate-Specific Antigen Testing, Michael H. Farrell, Margaret Ann Murphy, Carl E. Schneider
Articles
Routine cancer screening with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is controversial, and practice guidelines recommend that men be counseled about its risks and benefits. OBJECTIVE. To evaluate the process of decision making as men react to and use information after PSA counseling. DESIGN. Written surveys and semistructured qualitative interviews before and after a neutral PSA counseling intervention. PARTICIPANTS. Men 40 to 65 years of age in southeastern Michigan were recruited until thematic saturation—that is, the point at which no new themes emerged in interviews (n = 40). RESULTS. In a paper survey, 37 of 40 participants (93%) said that they interpreted the …
Interpersonal Conflict Within The Context Of The Organization, Jodi Lynn Sauders
Interpersonal Conflict Within The Context Of The Organization, Jodi Lynn Sauders
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This investigation was concerned with individual conflict management styles and situations. Participants were asked to complete the Organizational Communication Conflict Instrument (OCCI) (Putnam & Wilson, 1982) based on a particular conflict with a friend who is not a co-worker and a friend who is a co-worker. Results found that individuals do not change their conflict management styles based on situations. Also considered were the Big Three (Eysenck & Eysenck, 1985) personality types and their relationship to variability in one's conflict management styles. There were no relationships between variability and the Big Three.

A War Of Words: Halo Songs Of Abuse Among The Anlo Ewe, Corinna Campbell
A War Of Words: Halo Songs Of Abuse Among The Anlo Ewe, Corinna Campbell
African Diaspora ISPs
Sticks and stones will break my bones but words can never hurt me. Nearly every American child is taught the phrase. The Anlo Ewe of Ghana, however, have more reverence for the damaging potential of language. Their songs of abuse, or halo, are at once an artistic medium, a social control , and a source of humor and entertainment. At the same time they are a form of verbal warfare, with victims and casualties the same as in any other type of war. This mode of communication is at times beautiful and profound, yet because of the damage it can …

In Search Of King Solomon’S Ring: Cognitive And Communicative Studies Of Grey Parrots (Psittacus Erithacus), Irene M. Pepperberg
Sentience Collection
During the past 24 years, I have used a modeling technique (M/R procedure) to train Grey parrots to use an allospecific code (English speech) referentially; I then use the code to test their cognitive abilities. The oldest bird, Alex, labels more than 50 different objects, 7 colors, 5 shapes, quantities to 6, 3 categories (color, shape, material) and uses ‘no’, ‘come here’, wanna go X’ and ‘want Y’ (X and Y are appropriate location or item labels). He combines labels to identify, request, comment upon or refuse more than 100 items and to alter his environment. He processes queries to …
Stirring The Soul: The Influence Of Prayer On Mind And Body, E. James Baesler
Stirring The Soul: The Influence Of Prayer On Mind And Body, E. James Baesler
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
From the Introduction:
Individuals within and outside of the field of communication sometimes ask me what I do for a living. When I respond, “I do prayer research,” nearly everyone looks rather puzzled. After I explain that prayer is a type of spiritual communication, then most individuals immediately see the connection between communication and prayer. However, many communication scholars are not convinced that prayer is a communication-related phenomenon amenable to social scientific inquiry. Yet I believe that prayer is indeed worthy of further investigation.
Demonstrating Collegiality: A Co-Constructed Narrative Inquiry, Elizabeth A. Curry, Deborah Cunningham Walker
Demonstrating Collegiality: A Co-Constructed Narrative Inquiry, Elizabeth A. Curry, Deborah Cunningham Walker
Library Presentations & Publications
“Demonstrating Collegiality: A Co-Constructed Narrative Inquiry” seeks to define a collegial relationship through the experiences of two first year doctoral students at a large state-supported university. The techniques used to develop the co-constructed narrative parallel the authors’ development of a collaborative relationship. Using autoethnographic essays and interactive interviews, the authors co-construct several narratives that describe the process of moving from a friendly, social relationship to a scholarly, collaborative relationship, as well as the process of moving from peer reviewers to co-authors. An introductory narrative frames the paper; each of the “interior” narratives is accompanied by an extensive analytic introduction and …
Communicating About Aids-Changes In Understanding And Coping With Help Of Language In Urban Kagera, Tanzania, Aldin Mutembei, Maria Emmelin, Joe Lugalla, Lars Dahlgren
Communicating About Aids-Changes In Understanding And Coping With Help Of Language In Urban Kagera, Tanzania, Aldin Mutembei, Maria Emmelin, Joe Lugalla, Lars Dahlgren
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
Faced with the problems of HIV/AIDS, people have to find ways to communicate around them. The aim of this paper is to mirror changes over time in the Kagera people's social cognition regarding HIV/AIDS, using their own language as a tracer of this process. Focus group discussions and personal and group interviews conducted during 1992 to 1995 in urban Bukoba, Kagera, constitute the basis for an analysis of metaphorical expressions in use since 1985. Pronounced uncertainty is later transformed into a deeper understanding of the pandemic and an increased disposition to cope with the situation. Knowledge about the socio-linguistic expressions …

The Moderating Role Of Trust On The Relationship Between Ingratiatory Communication Strategies And Interactional Fairness, Erik Drafsten
The Moderating Role Of Trust On The Relationship Between Ingratiatory Communication Strategies And Interactional Fairness, Erik Drafsten
Student Work
Previous research has shown that when perceptions of both procedural justice and distributive justice are low, increasing perceptions of interactional fairness can serve to reduce negative consequences that an organization may face, including subtle forms of retaliation, or what are known as organizational retaliatory behaviors (ORB). In an organizational setting personal attempts to improve perceptions of interactional fairness, under conditions of low distributive and procedural justice, can take on ingratiatory-like qualities when the source attempting to boost these perceptions of interactional fairness uses flattery, expresses excessive empathy, or excessive sympathy. Research has shown that ingratiatory actions such as these become …

Echolalia As A Possible Language Tool In Children With Autism, Shauna Rogers
Echolalia As A Possible Language Tool In Children With Autism, Shauna Rogers
Whittier Scholars Program
The purpose of this project was to explore the possible communicative functions of immediate echolalia in an autistic child. The work of the author is presented along with a review of other research done on echolalia in autistic children. However, for a truly comprehensive understanding of echolalia in autistic children, it must be examined within the context of the disorder itself. Therefore, a broad overview of autism is given first. In this overview, the characteristics of autism are discussed and a general introduction into the theories on causation is provided, along with a review of the language impairments characteristic of …

Status And Status Differential As Predictors Of Student Learning, Teacher Evaluation, Teacher Socio-Communicative Style And Teacher Credibility, Boris Hellmann
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined the relationships of perceived teacher-student status as well as their status differential with student learning, teacher evaluation, teacher socio-communicative style, and teacher credibility. It was found that perceived teacher status is a weak predictor of student cognitive and affective learning, teacher evaluation, teacher socio-communicative style and teacher credibility. Students' perception of their own status was also found to be a weak predictor of the learning loss, teacher evaluation as well as teacher competence, and trustworthiness. Moreover, status differential between teacher and student was found to be a weak predictor of student affective learning as well as teacher …
Co-Constructed Interpersonal Perceptions Of Self: Meaning-Making In The Astrological Consultation, Jean Alice Richey
Co-Constructed Interpersonal Perceptions Of Self: Meaning-Making In The Astrological Consultation, Jean Alice Richey
Communication
This research study employs qualitative narrative analysis in order to develop an understanding of co-constructed meaning of self-identity within the astrological practitioner-client relationship. The literature review includes theoretical perspectives from interpersonal communication, the social construction of reality and of self-identity, and transpersonal studies. Three emergent themes from six narrative interviews are discussed in regard to co-constructed constitutive interpretations of self-identity: (1) cultural stranger/insider standpoint, (2) worldview metaphors, (3) and recognition of a socially embedded self. The consultation narrative illustrates the constitution of identity in interaction with an other who is afforded the status of "professional" regarding the interaction itself. Like …

Research outputs pre 2011
This publication is the output of 2001 School of Communications and Multimedia post-graduate cohort. For many of us this is the first time our own work will be seen beyond the assignment or the essay destined for the tutor. For students from the interactive multimedia and film and video streams communicating in the written word without the assistance of pictures and electrical gadgetry can be a frightening experience. Further, most us of had little experience in creating or simulating an academic journal with all that it entails. Still, with assistance of our publications unit coordinator Lelia Green we soldiered on. …

Facilitating The Process Of Knowledge Construction Among Preservice Teachers Through Computer -Mediated Communications, Jennifer Ann Peterson-Lewinson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study was concerned with the potential for asynchronous computer-mediated communications (CMC) to facilitate the process of knowledge construction among preservice teachers. Using both quantitative and qualitative research methods, this study examined the extent to which the CMC among six groups of preservice teachers was influenced by (a) the structure and focus of CMC, and (b) the interactions among peers. Of particular interest was (a) how these factors influenced the depth in cognitive processing that was displayed throughout the course of the semester, and (b) the patterns of social dialogue and interactions that were involved with the displayed levels in …
