An Enhanced Real-Time Intrusion Detection Framework Using Federated Transfer Learning In Large-Scale Iot Networks, Khawlah Harahsheh, Malek Alzaqebah, Chung-Hao Chen
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The exponential growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has introduced critical security challenges, particularly in scalability, privacy, and resource constraints. Traditional centralized intrusion detection systems (IDS) struggle to address these issues effectively. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes a novel Federated Transfer Learning (FTL)-based intrusion detection framework tailored for large-scale IoT networks. By integrating Federated Learning (FL) with Transfer Learning (TL), the framework enhances detection capabilities while ensuring data privacy and reducing communication overhead. The hybrid model incorporates convolutional neural networks (CNNs), bidirectional gated recurrent units (BiGRUs), attention mechanisms, and ensemble learning. To address the class imbalance, Synthetic …

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
Quite often, we take writing for granted. The sublime simplicity of mere symbols or scratches on a page escapes our attention as we search for more significant sources of meaning in a memory that can be only fleeting and fragmentary at best. But what could be more fundamental to our source of self and community than language and, by extension, writing? Human beings could not be saved from living in an eternal present if they lacked the ability given them by language to reflect. Community with others can be formed only if there is a means of preserving and sharing …

Ontological Inquiry In An Undergraduate Communication Course, William B. Strean
Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education
This essay explores how ontological and somatic approaches were applied in an undergraduate communication course. Beginning by contrasting the assumptions of traditional knowledge and skills-based approaches with the shift to a focus on being within ontological methods, the author expands to show specifically how somatics informed the learning activities and students’ development in communication. After providing examples of the core content of public speaking and interpersonal communication and shares students’ learning and feedback, the author concludes by considering broader possibilities for ontological inquiry and transformative education.

Listening – A Possibility For Improved Healthcare, Sam Katzif
Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education
The conversation between a healthcare provider and a patient is one component of obtaining information for diagnosis and treatment. Responsibility rests with healthcare providers to actively lead this conversation so this exchange of information is accurate and complete with nothing added to and nothing left out. The question then becomes, “Do the words of the patient land word for word with their practitioner?”. In the world of “being” or ontology the answer is no. This article will focus on an ontological perceptual constraint known as Already-Always-Listening and introduce the practice of Authentic Listening as access to a transformation in healthcare …

Lost In Interpretation: The Lived Experience Of Nurse Interpreters In The Clinical Setting, Byron Batz
Dissertations
The use of language interpreters in the health care setting constitutes a vital part of provider-patient communication but remains a relatively unexplored phenomenon. Registered nurses (RNs) are often called upon to serve as interpreters when linguistically diverse patients constitute a large segment of the patient population. That RNs serve simultaneously in an interpreter role – in addition to clinical and advocacy roles – is a complex facet of contemporary nursing practice in a diverse U.S. culture. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to examine the lived experience of RNs serving as interpreters in health care institutions in Southern …

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, facemask requirements while indoors were implemented in colleges and universities, both in the United States and beyond. Empirical evidence has shown that such mandates improved the health and safety of students, faculty, staff, and administrators. However, the impacts of such precautions on student learning and communication have to date gone largely unexplored. The current study surveyed students and faculty at one regional midwestern institution to assess their perceptions on the impact of masks on student learning and communication in the classroom. Findings are included, followed by a discussion of their implications.
