The Wooster Code of Social Responsibility could be affected. Due to previous incidents new rules were enacted for post office conduct. College of Wooster communication Professor Metcalf spent winter break tracking politicians in New Hampshire. Folk/blues/americana singer Odetta was set to perform at the College.
"Nobody Said Anything" Issues Of Communication In The Short Stories Of Raymond Carver, Darren Bosch
"Nobody Said Anything" Issues Of Communication In The Short Stories Of Raymond Carver, Darren Bosch
Honors Papers
In this paper I plan to divide my consideration of the different levels of communication in Carver's work into several categories, realizing that these categories overlap and are in no way mutually exclusive. First, I will consider Carver's characters, what might be called communication within the story, or communication as theme. Second, I will specifically look at the narrator, who is both character (and therefore a part of the issues of communication within the story) and communication link between the text and the reader. Finally I will address how narrative point of view and other aspects of Carver's style, such …

A Training Program Designed To Enhance Supervision Of Child And Youth Care Workers In Multicultural Settings, Lesley Du Toit
A Training Program Designed To Enhance Supervision Of Child And Youth Care Workers In Multicultural Settings, Lesley Du Toit
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The majority of child care practitioners promoted to supervisory positions did not have the essential skill and knowledge to ensure effective supervision. Alternatively, supervisory positions were given to practitioners from a related profession, such as social work. In this instance, supervisors had difficulty in recognizing the importance of supervision, and in knowing how to approach supervision of child and youth care workers.
The author designed and implemented a 10 week training programme for child and youth care supervisors. A total of 11 supervisors participated in a three-phase training program which included individual consultations and b training workshops. The workshops focused …

Communication And Socialization Skills At Ages 2 And 3 In "Late-Talking" Young Children, Rhea Paul, Shawn S. Looney, Pamela S. Dahm
Communication And Socialization Skills At Ages 2 And 3 In "Late-Talking" Young Children, Rhea Paul, Shawn S. Looney, Pamela S. Dahm
Communication Disorders Faculty Publications
Twenty-one apparently normal children between 18 and 34 months of age with slow expressive language acquisition were compared to a group of normally speaking children matched for age, SES, and sex ratio, on the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (Sparrow, Balla, & Cicchetti, 1984). The late talkers (LTs) scored significantly lower not only in expressive communication, but also in receptive communication and socialization. A follow-up study of the same subjects, seen at age 3, showed nearly half the 3-year-olds with a history of LT remained delayed in expressive communication and socialization, while one third remained behind in receptive language. The data …
Communicating With Graphic User Interfaces: A Comparison Of Menu Selection And Menu Bypass Techniques, Monty Lee Hammontree
Communicating With Graphic User Interfaces: A Comparison Of Menu Selection And Menu Bypass Techniques, Monty Lee Hammontree
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The present study was conducted in two phases to determine design tradeoffs relating to command bar menu and bypass code-based techniques for interacting with computers. Forty eight subjects participated. In the first phase of the experiment, mouse-, chorded key-, and function key-based menu selection techniques were compared. It was found that menus were accessed much faster with spatially mapped function keys as compared to chorded key sequences or mouse inputs, and that relative to mouse inputs compatible letter keys lead to faster command selection times. Further, the function key-based technique yielded the fastest combined access and selection times, the fastest …
Cross Cultural Understanding Through Language, Shaun Bradley Roundy
Cross Cultural Understanding Through Language, Shaun Bradley Roundy
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Much has been done to discover the place that language holds in the development of our communication and thought patterns. The methods through which members of various societies learn different attitudes and how their respective languages reflect and reinforce such patterns have also been studied in some depth with a number of world cultures. The interpersonal barriers and misunderstandings brought about by the dissimilarities between unconscious but powerful forces that culture has upon our thinking are understandably difficult to discern and thereby surmount. In this paper, I will demonstrate how the chances of achieving this aim may be enhanced through …

Family Strengths Among Black Families In Alaska: A Case Study, Washington W. Brown Jr.
Family Strengths Among Black Families In Alaska: A Case Study, Washington W. Brown Jr.
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The idea of a strong family is a very subjective concept. A strength, according to one set of criteria, could easily be interpreted as a weakness according to another set of criteria--and vice-versa. Most scholars of the family would agree that a strong bond of affection between family members is usually an asset. But if this affection is manifested in extremely dependent and stifling relationships among family members, such a bond would generally be characterized as a "pathological" liability.
The family has traditionally provided the foundation for society, and, though in contemporary America some of its functions have been absorbed …

Phonological Profile For The Hearing Impaired : Manual, Iris Vardi
Phonological Profile For The Hearing Impaired : Manual, Iris Vardi
Research outputs pre 2011
Anyone who deals with the speech of the hearing impaired is only too well aware of the wide range of speech problems that can present. Many of these problems have been thoroughly researched and documented. Toni Gold (1980), detailed the following characteristics of hearing impaired speech as revealed by the literature to that date:
(l) intelligibility problems;
(2) consonant errors relating to voicing, consonant omissions, position of consonant error in word, difficulties with consonant blends, effects of place of articulation;
(3) vowel and diphthong errors;
(4) suprasegmental errors including problems with rate, increased duration of phonemes, timing, pausing; and
(5) …
Our Meanings Can Never Be The Same: Reflections On Language And Law, James Boyd White
Our Meanings Can Never Be The Same: Reflections On Language And Law, James Boyd White
Articles
For me it is a starting point in all thought about language that, whatever I say or do with words, my expression will never mean exactly the same thing to you that it does to me; and of course yours will never mean exactly the same thing to me that it does to you. It cannot: each act of expression is a gesture against a context; it derives its meaning largely. perhaps entirely, from its relation to that context; and for each of us the context of every gesture is different, if only because one of us is doing it, …
Improving Active Parent Involvement For Preschool Teachers And Parents Through In-Service Training, Robin M. Irving
Improving Active Parent Involvement For Preschool Teachers And Parents Through In-Service Training, Robin M. Irving
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to provide information and support for preschool teachers to help parents in teaching an active role to parenting. The primary goal was that there would be more active parent involvement between parents and children ages three to five years. The literature indicated that training sessions to provide information and support to teachers and parents could be successful in teaching an active role to parenting. Because the center parents were responsible parents, seeking advice to help in teaching their children, the community preschool teachers were supportive of the center's program and staff, and had requested parent education …

Improving The Morale Level Of Direct-Care Staff In A Residential Group Setting Through Support, Communication, And Recognition, Jimmy Mcadams
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum sought to elevate the morale level of direct-care staff in a residential group care setting. Corollary aims were to reduce staff turnover and to improve staff performance both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Four solutions strategies were attempted, which addressed the areas of staff support, communication, and recognition. The writer, representative of a top administrative position, conducted personal visits with staff at service sites. Three round table, dialoguing meetings were held within each of three regions. Agency communication was enhanced through retargeting and increasing the frequency of an intro agency publication so that its focus was on direct care staff. …
