Improving Teen And Pediatric Provider Communication Through Education And Technology, Kathy A. Connor-Prows
Improving Teen And Pediatric Provider Communication Through Education And Technology, Kathy A. Connor-Prows
Doctoral Projects
Navigating healthcare can be daunting as an adult, but doing so as a teenager can seem virtually impossible. Until the age of eighteen, parents of children of all ages initiate, schedule, and accompany their children to see their pediatrician for virtually all appointments. Over time, children and their parents develop a special bond with their pediatrician and too frequently, this relationship becomes abruptly severed as their teen turns eighteen years old and is thrust into adult medicine. As healthcare providers, we expect healthcare consumers (including teens) to know how and when to initiate, schedule, and get themselves to an appointment. …
Velleity, Yiyun Chen
Velleity, Yiyun Chen
Theses
The work Velleity is an installation of photographs presented on the gallery wall along with a photobook, which explore the process of self-reflection and self-discovery. This experimental work is a form of meditation, which reveals itself through the process of walking photographing, and repurposing into a work of art. The photobook, with its textual references and adaptation of color, develops the concept of the images and text as the language to describe the seemingly unexceptional moments of everyday life. Visualizing the experience as a person navigating different cultures, social expectations, and realities, ponders my displacement in the past and present, …

Discourse In The Elementary Classroom, Kathryn Hardy
Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Literacy
As literacy standards across the country grow more rigorous, literacy practices need to follow suit. With the implementation of the Common Core Speaking and Listening Standards in 2010, classroom instruction in the facilitation of student discourse has become not only beneficial, but required. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an instructional framework for student discourse called Statement Stem Discourse/Accountable Talk (SSD/AT). This instructional frame included discussion stems, teacher prompts, and guidelines for student responses. This study observed the impacts of discourse on 19 students over the course of six weeks. Emojis And The Law, Eric Goldman
Emojis And The Law, Eric Goldman
Faculty Publications
Emojis are an increasingly important way we express ourselves. Though emojis may be cute and fun, their usage can lead to misunderstandings with significant legal stakes—such as whether someone should be obligated by contract, liable for sexual harassment, or sent to jail.
Our legal system has substantial experience interpreting new forms of content, so it should be equipped to handle emojis. Nevertheless, some special attributes of emojis create extra interpretative challenges. This Article identifies those attributes and proposes how courts should handle them.
One particularly troublesome interpretative challenge arises from the different ways platforms depict emojis that are nominally standardized …
The Relationship Between Maternal Distress And Adjustment Problems In Adolescents With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: An Examination Of Family Routines And Communication As Moderators, Ryan Nicole Cummins
LSU Master's Theses
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common disorder in youth. The presence of comorbid internalizing and externalizing symptoms is a frequent occurrence in ADHD youth; comorbid symptoms are associated with poor adjustment into adolescence and negative trajectories into adulthood. There are many contributing factors in the development of comorbid symptoms (e.g., parental distress and family environment). Thus, it is important to understand the relationship between contributing factors and the ways in which family consistency helps to manage problem behaviors in adolescents with ADHD. One way to increase consistency is through the use of routines and positive communication. The present study examined …
Division I Female Student Athletes’ Self-Image Perceptions And The Association With Photo Centric Social Media Platforms, Logan Paul
Honors Projects in Applied Psychology
The purpose of this study is to describe self-image (body image) perceptions of female, Division I student athletes and discover how photo centric social media platforms and the frequency of their use may shape these perceptions. Body image is a complex phenomenon influenced by many factors including peers, parents, coaches, and social constructs. In the general population, data has shown that media messages play a powerful role in shaping perceived self-image and body satisfaction. Body image may not match the actual body and the athlete may strive more often to achieve a body ideal. It is hypothesized that female athletes …
Chasing Success: A Cultivated Reality, Anastasia Bevillard
Chasing Success: A Cultivated Reality, Anastasia Bevillard
Honors Projects in Communication
George Gerbner’s cultivation theory claims that people who consume heavy amounts of media are more likely to be influenced by those messages to believe the media reality as opposed to actual reality. Using cultivation theory as the basis for study, I performed a cultivation analysis examining the intersection of mass media and perceptions of success among college-aged young adults living in the United States. The analysis focused on three main points: (1) How mass media perceives and subsequently demonstrates success. (2) The impact of mass media on young adults living in America. (3) What reality of success is cultivated by …

Privileging Public Defense Research, Janet Moore, Ellen Yaroshefsky, Andrew L. Davies
Faculty Articles and Other Publications
Empirical research on public defense is a new and rapidly growing field in which the quality of attorney-client communication is emerging as a top priority. For decades, law has lagged behind medicine and other professions in the empirical study of effective communication. The few studies of attorney-client communication focus mainly on civil cases. They also tend to rely on role-playing by non-lawyers or on post hoc inquiries about past experiences. Direct observation by researchers of real-time defendant-defender communication offers advantages over those approaches, but injecting researchers into the attorney-client dyad is in tension with legal and ethical precepts that protect …
Mediation In The Mediterranean: Italy As A Crucible For Immigration And Intercultural Mediation, Nicole Patteuw Abetti
Mediation In The Mediterranean: Italy As A Crucible For Immigration And Intercultural Mediation, Nicole Patteuw Abetti
MA TESOL Collection
Europe is again in an intense state of migration influx. While some European countries have historical precedence for these types of population shifts, Italy has largely remained outside the modern phenomenon, since it did not experience the economic boom of post WW2 and the subsequent demand for migrant workers, nor did it experience the pull effect of language migrants after the decolonization of Africa. Italy therefore also missed the second surge of migration during the 70’s and 80’s when families of these immigrants began arriving in Europe. What Italy did experience throughout the 20th century, and continues to experience …
The Importance Of Language In Cross-Cultural Interaction, Lacy Norton
The Importance Of Language In Cross-Cultural Interaction, Lacy Norton
Senior Honors Theses
Language and culture are connected. Because of this connection, people have a preferred language with which they have an emotional or cultural connection. In Latin American cultures, it is beneficial to speak to a person in their preferred language. Using a person’s preferred language as opposed to any other language will facilitate a deeper connection with that person, cross cultural barriers that may separate them, and be more effective when attempting to share the gospel.

Try To See It My Way: Patient Perspective Video Capture Debriefing In Simulation, Terri Hendry
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
Video capture of simulation provides observation from a wide-angle view. This study introduced a new technique, “patient-perspective” video capture, using a camera mounted into eyeglasses allowing learners to view their nonverbal and verbal communication through the patient’s eyes and to compare this to the wide-angle view. The participants (n = 29) were Nurse Practitioner students. The majority were female (93.2%), with a mean age of 36.8, SD = 12.31. The sample consisted of Millennials (65.6%), Generation Xers (13.8%), and Baby Boomers (20.7%). The average number of years of nursing practice was 9.89. Instruments measured demographics, five domains of patient-centered care …
Impact Analysis Of Loved One Peer Coaching On Persons With The Disease Of Addiction, Ally Krupinsky
Impact Analysis Of Loved One Peer Coaching On Persons With The Disease Of Addiction, Ally Krupinsky
Honors Thesis
When considering the impacts of addiction on society, it is important to include loved ones (LOs) – close friends and family members of those suffering from the chronic disease. The societal burden placed on LOs, in addition to the stress and pain they already experience in the face of addiction, results in an extremely neglected and isolated population. Using deductive thematic analysis procedures, this paper examines the role of LO wellness in person with disease (PWD) recovery by reviewing the impact of peer coaching, a new form of support for LOs. Semi-structured interviews with seven PWD and LO clients of …

Communication And Biodegradable Packaging Relationship: A Paradigm For Final Disposal, Breno Luiz Ottoni, Rafael Mattos Deus, José Alcides Gobbo Junior, Ângela Maria Grossi De Carvalho, Rosane Aparecida Gomes Battistelle
Journal of Applied Packaging Research
Solid waste generation is estimated to increase from 1.3 billion to 2.2 billion tons by 2025, causing environmental, social, and consequently public health problems. The biggest problem in this regard involves the inadequate disposal of waste, and in emerging countries like Brazil, it is sorted less waste for recycling or composting. In this context, plastic packaging is more complex due to the high polymer composition, as well as low recycling rates. Bioplastics appear as alternatives because they are mostly biodegradable. Given the various functions of packaging and a systematic review of the literature, the aim of this study was to …
