Elder Care: An Evaluation Of Communication Resources For Lay Caregivers In Southern Nevada, Deborah Lee Hauth
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Hidden behind closed doors of nursing homes, hospitals and neighborhood residences, was a segment of the population suffering from dementing illnesses. Although seldom seen, these older Americans presented significant challenges for the family members caring for them. This study focused attention on these lay caregivers and the effectiveness of community resources, from their perspective. With assistance from Southern Nevada Alzheimer's Association staff, a survey was conducted. The results showed agencies rated as "satisfactory" in their efforts to provide information, with the Alzheimer's Association newsletter ranked as the primary source of information for caregivers. While the survey provided insights regarding caregivers …

Salinity Action Plan : Wetland Vegetation Monitoring, 1998/1999, R. Gurner, G. Ogden, R. H. Froend
Research outputs pre 2011
This report represents the vegetation component of a project designed to provide on-going monitoring of wetland salinity and biological resources in wetlands of the agricultural zone of south-west Western Australia. Maintenance of wetland biological diversity in the agricultural zone is one of the major objectives of the Salinity Action Plan. Due to their low position in the landscape, wetlands are the habitat most affected by salinisation...

Gender And Social Responsibility: A Comparison Of Marcia Clark And Male Attorneys In Time And Newsweek., Mary Lou Moss Costanzo
Student Work
The purpose of this study was to compare Marcia Clark and the male attorneys as they were portrayed in Time and Newsweek during the O.J. Simpson "trial of the century." Focusing on gender and social responsibility, a qualitative analysis was made regarding sexism in these two newsweeklies. Clark was the lead prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial. Using Pingree et al. (1976) measurement of sexism in media; the news reporting on Clark's professional life was found to be similar to that of the male attorneys. But when comparing appearance and personal life, Clark was unequal to the male attorneys. She …

The Portrayal Of Older Adults In Consumer Magazines., Bonnie M. Gill
The Portrayal Of Older Adults In Consumer Magazines., Bonnie M. Gill
Student Work
Images of older adults in the news and advertising media contribute to the way society learns about aging. Visual presentations become increasingly important in our society of information overload where shortcuts are taken through graphics and sound bites. Perceptions are created instantly. There has been little recent research with the portrayal and representation of our aging society in general consumer magazines during the 1990s. There have been no studies that combine both news/feature and advertising photographs. This study seeks to add to the current literature about magazine portrayals of adults over age 65 through a content analysis of four national, …

The Place Of The Answering Machine In Institutional Interaction, Julia Neikirk
The Place Of The Answering Machine In Institutional Interaction, Julia Neikirk
Honors Papers
Telephone conversations are unusual in several ways: messages must travel a distance, communication is based only in sound (where face to face encounters draw on visual clues), generally conversations occur only in dyads (caller-answerer), the only means of entry to these encounters is a summons-answer sequence (an unusual way for a face to face encounter to begin), and talking is the primary and often the only activity taking place in such an encounter. Telephony splits sounds from other senses, splits the dyad from society, and splits communication from other activities (Hopper 1992:41). McLuban refers to the telephone as the irresistible …
Sewing The Seeds Of Passion: A Study On Effectively Communicating Vision In A Volunteer Based Non Profit Organization, John R. Miller
Sewing The Seeds Of Passion: A Study On Effectively Communicating Vision In A Volunteer Based Non Profit Organization, John R. Miller
Theses
This thesis will focus on the study of modem nonprofit organization and the crucial role which leader hip and vision play in fueling these organizations.
Recent literature. written both specifically about nonprofit and about corporate culture in the general business world. suggests that there is a direct correlation between the strength of leadership al the executive and board levels, and the degree to which volunteers and paid staff will "buy-in" to the philosophy and work of the nonprofit . And because of the nature of the nonprofit business, that is, that it exists "for the public good" as opposed to …
Integrated Marketing Communication, Nareerat Kesaraphong
Integrated Marketing Communication, Nareerat Kesaraphong
Theses
This thesis will focus on the Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) in the United States and Thailand.
The new world of IMC provides a radically different way for companies to promote themselves. Throughout marketing history companies promoted a product by advertising. Advertising stated the "reason" people should purchase the product. You advertise it heavily. Consumers buy it. Advertising was king.
Integrated Communication and integrated marketing is good to reach the same amount of consumers that had been reached in the past. The vast amount of media available, such as the World Wide Web, trade shows, television, periodicals and outdoor advertising, make …
"Dilbert": A Rhetorical Reflection Of Contemporary Organizational Communication, Beverly Ann Jedlinski
"Dilbert": A Rhetorical Reflection Of Contemporary Organizational Communication, Beverly Ann Jedlinski
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The comic strip "Dilbert," created by Scott Adams, was analyzed to evaluate its accuracy and effectiveness in mirroring contemporary organizational communication. This historical case study utilized the methods proposed by Kathleen J. Turner (1977) to provide a rhetorical perspective of "Dilbert" and to demonstrate the reciprocal relationship between the comic and society. A three-pronged approach was applied to examine: (1) Precedents in comic strips and organizational communication; (2) Subject matter and dialogue; and (3) Character composition and artistic style. Conclusions indicate that Adams has astutely captured the dysfunctional nature of workplace communication in a unique form of discourse embraced by …
