Print, electronic, and other forms of communications media have been consistently perceived and characterized by leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as tools to assist in spreading the gospel message throughout the world. Given this perspective, the Church from its earliest days has used various forms of media as vehicles of communication. It has produced or been affiliated with the production of numerous newspapers and magazines in the United States and in several countries worldwide. In the twentieth century, the Church embraced electronic media technologies promptly. Our goal as mass communications scholars was to compile a …

Teacher Mentoring And Teacher Attrition In A Rural Georgia School System, Brenda K. James

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Teacher attrition is a critical issue. The literature suggests that schools provide professional opportunities for master teachers to mentor new teachers through the use of well-designed induction or mentor programs. These opportunities develop teaching skills, improve teaching performance, and increase teacher retention.

This applied dissertation was designed to improve teacher retention at a high school located in a rural community in South Georgia. A mentoring program was developed and implemented at a high school. The program provided training to select mentors that included nonevaluative supervision, coaching, conflict resolution, collaborative problem solving, communication, and effective feedback strategies.

An Ethnographic Investigation Of The Relevance Of Shop Floor Culture To Effective Safety Communication In An Australian Minerals Refinery, David R. Leith Jan 2003

An Ethnographic Investigation Of The Relevance Of Shop Floor Culture To Effective Safety Communication In An Australian Minerals Refinery, David R. Leith

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Many organisations which aim to achieve excellent workplace safety choose 'culture change' as the means to achieve this. They make use of employee communication media to help re-form the values, beliefs, norms and behaviours which are generally thought to comprise culture. However, culture is a complex and profound phenomenon. Successful communication between two culturally separate groups requires each to achieve an understanding of the other, no less so in workplaces than in societies composed of different cultures.Yet even employers who believe in communicating fully with their workforces find it difficult to convey viewpoints other than their own. Their communication tends …

A Compare And Contrast Analysis Of Yentl And Thelma And Louise From A Feminist Perspective, Steven Craig Eskew Dec 2002

A Compare And Contrast Analysis Of Yentl And Thelma And Louise From A Feminist Perspective, Steven Craig Eskew

Student Work

Feminists in the mid-1970s initiated attention to a longtime complaint shared by many women: the manner in which females are portrayed in films. America boasts a patriarchal society containing an ideological foundation that operates contrary to many female interests. A feminist examination of film exposes how scripts place female characters in narratives and textual interactions that involves a collaboration between the filmmakers and the film spectaters, constituting a patriarchal definition of femininity. Because they believe such a definition promotes unfavorable stereotyping, feminists seek to challenge such a collaboration, introducing instead female characters who exemplify a feminist voice, representing a more …

The Effects Of Communication Modality On Teamwork Processes, Thomas D. Fletcher Oct 2002

The Effects Of Communication Modality On Teamwork Processes, Thomas D. Fletcher

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Since the onset of the digital age, organizations have been able to make use of teams of individuals distributed geographically to remain competitive. While strides have been made to understand the effectiveness of collocated teams, research has yet to sufficiently explore the effects of emerging technologies on team processes and effectiveness. A laboratory study, where dyads were asked to create a spreadsheet by following a set of explicit instructions (i.e., a psychomotor task), was conducted to manipulate the communication modalities most commonly used between collaborators (i.e., face-to-face vs. audio) and compare the effects of adding a shared workspace application. The …

Exchanging Preliminary Information In Concurrent Engineering: Alternative Coordination Strategies, Christian Terwiesch, Christoph H. Loch, Arnoud De Meyer Jul 2002

Exchanging Preliminary Information In Concurrent Engineering: Alternative Coordination Strategies, Christian Terwiesch, Christoph H. Loch, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Successful application of concurrent development processes (concurrent engineering) requires tight coordination. To speed development, tasks often proceed in parallel by relying on preliminary information from other tasks, information that has not yet been finalized. This frequently causes substantial rework using as much as 50% of total engineering capacity. Previous studies have either described coordination as a complex social process, or have focused on the frequency, but not the content, of information exchanges. Through extensive fieldwork in a high-end German automotive manufacturer, we develop a framework of preliminary information that distinguishes information precision and information stability. Information precision refers to the …

Today, online journalism offers a new interesting spectrum of communication capabilities going beyond linear writing. Video and audio streaming, graphic animations, hyperlinks, as well as interactive communication and customization are only a few examples of the interesting features offered by on line newspapers. In the past few years, Egyptian newspapers launched news sites designed for the convergence of traditional media into the new on line environment. Multimedia storytelling intended to be used to produce omni-directional coverage of the news that would foster more precise and free journalism. Statistics based on a content evaluation of the on line editions of the …

Mr. Stewart And Mr. Colbert Go To Washington: Television Satirists Outside The Box, Amber Day, Jeffrey P. Jones, Geoffrey Baym

English and Cultural Studies Journal Articles

The political satirists Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are largely celebrated for their nightly television programs, which use humor to offer useful political information, provide important forums for deliberation and debate, and serve as sites for alternative interpretations of political reality. Yet, when the two satirists more directly intervene in the field of politics—which they increasingly do—they are often met by a chorus of criticism that suggests they have improperly crossed normative boundaries. This article explores Stewart and Colbert’s “out of the box” political performances, which include, among others, the 2010 Rally to Restore Sanity, Colbert’s testimony before Congress in …

Mothers In The Media: Blamed And Celebrated -- An Examination Of Drug Abuse And Multiple Births., Sonya Charles, Tricha Shivas

Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications

The media has always had a profound interest in mothers and birth stories. This study examined the difference between media portrayal of 'good' mothers and 'bad' mothers. Did the media cover potential harm to fetuses and would-be children in the same way for two groups of mothers: (a) pregnant women addicted to illicit drugs and (b) women who chose to continue a high-order, multiple birth pregnancy? Two searches were conducted on Lexis-Nexis, one with keywords 'McCaughey and birth' and another with the keywords 'pregnancy and illegal drugs.' A total of 210 articles were coded for the McCaughey search, and 90 …

Telecommunication And Nigeria's Economic Development: Challenges, Prospects And Policy Suggestions, A. Englama, A. Bamidele

Economic and Financial Review

Efficient telecommunications sine qua non with national integration: speedy business transaction; and economic growth and development. However, after a century of telecommunications existence in the country, teledensity was still grossly inadequate at 1 :281 in year 2000, in contrast to the International Telecommunications Union's (ITU) 1: 100 standard. This was traceable to equipment obsolescence, among others. Recent developments such as the launching of the Global System of Mobile (GSM) telecommunications and the proposed privatization of NITEL are therefore welcomed. Furthermore, to realize the full potentials of telecommunications service in tlte Nigeria economy, both the traditional terrestrial line system and the …
