Are Television News Programs Becoming Nothing More Than Infotainment?, Nicole Morell May 2007

Are Television News Programs Becoming Nothing More Than Infotainment?, Nicole Morell

Senior Honors Projects

The money driven, have-it-done-by-yesterday world Americans live in takes no prisoners, and television news is certainly no exception. Driven by profits and struggling to keep up with the busy American with a short attention span and even shorter amount of free time, it seems broadcast television news programs have resorted to a man bites dog, blood and guts, celebrity format. What many think of as news seems to be no more than a few attention grabbing headlines already digested and spit back out in a way that the viewer can understand. In order to get down to the real story …

Will The Twenty-Five Of You Accept This Rose? Assessing Gender Portrayals On Abc's The Bachelor., Glaucia Pereira Steckelberg

Student Work

Cultivation theory suggests that television viewing influences beliefs and opinions about the real world. Also, framing theory suggests that the way we see an issue may be directly related to how media portray it. The recent pervasiveness of reality-television dating shows in prime time provides a sea of opportunities for gender communication research. The purpose here was to explore women's representations in a courtship context as depicted in ABC's The Bachelor to determine the presence of female stereotypes (RQl). Three groups of eliminated women were also compared to determine differences among them in terms of appearance and behavior (RQ2). In …

Comunicación: Exploring Language And Cultural Barriers In Healthcare, Jessica Bayner

English Honors Papers

The ability to relay an idea or message to another is extremely powerful, as it requires coherence on the part of the communicator, and understanding on the part of the person one is communicating with. In terms of healthcare, a patient’s needs must be made clear to the Doctor. Likewise, a Doctor should be able to convey his/her thoughts to whomever is being treated. However, the success of such an interaction with Hispanics in particular is not only based on verbal efforts; body language, culture, and signs of respect all come into play (de Paula, Lagana, & Gonzalez-Ramirez 203, as …

The Chasm Between Two Parallel Worlds, Brandi Harline May 2007

The Chasm Between Two Parallel Worlds, Brandi Harline

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In much of the research conducted on military issues, problems are identified years, sometimes decades, before the military publicly acknowledges these concerns; an example of this is sexual assault, which scholars discussed for over thirty years before the military acknowledged the issue. In this paper, I study the value differences between the military leadership and the scholars who study military topics and how these different values may hinder effective communication between the two groups. The method I use in identifying the standards by which the two groups identify problems is content analysis on articles published by the two communities, calculating …

Investigating The Worldwide Popularity Of Forensics, Heather Stankiewicz Apr 2007

Investigating The Worldwide Popularity Of Forensics, Heather Stankiewicz

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

The popularity of forensic science has increased dramatically over the past decade throughout the United States. However, has this popularity spread to other countries around the world and to what extent? In the United States, there are numerous television shows focusing on the law and crime scene analysis, including “CSI,” “Law and Order,” “24,” “Crossing Jordan,” and “Forensic Files,” just to name a few. It is evident that the fascination with forensics has also reached other countries with the spread of the television show “CSI” to England, Thailand, and even India. Because of the popularity with these television shows, this …

Contradiction And The Carnival: A Study Of Mcgregor’S Theory X And Theory Y Framework Applied To Communication Within A Carnival Setting, Ashley Dawn Johnston

Masters Theses

The following study addresses Douglas McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y management paradigm as applied toward carnival executives' (CEs) communication to employees. Fifteen CEs were interviewed and elicited narratives that held either Theory X or Theory Y paradigm. From the narratives it was discovered that most CEs held a Theory Y paradigm toward employees. However, it was also discovered that the Theory Y paradigm may be a result of increased use of foreign labor or a swing in the carnival industry itself.

The Portrayal Of Powerful Women In The Media, Kristin Milligan Apr 2007

The Portrayal Of Powerful Women In The Media, Kristin Milligan

Honors Projects in Communication

The purpose of this research is to investigate the portrayal of powerful women in the media and to gain a perspective of different ways the media tend to elaborate and focus on gender issues to a greater extent than the general public may think. I intend to demonstrate that powerful women are often portrayed unfairly in the media and that this could affect the progress they make in their careers. I hypothesize that although women are making strides in the right direction, the often negative portrayal of powerful women in the media can be unwarranted and lead to the unfair …

Health, Behavior & Society Faculty Publications

As a collaboratory for cancer communication and education research, the National Cancer Institute's (NCIs) Cancer Information Service (CIS) is in an ideal position to bridge the critical chasm that exists between service and research. This article describes the CIS' current research program as well as the CIS Research Agenda launched in 2005. The CIS' progress in developing and supporting recently funded studies that address this agenda is detailed. The unique resources and opportunities available to researchers, public health practitioners, health care providers, and community-based organizations interested in developing collaborative cancer communication and cancer education studies with the CIS are identified …

First Amendment And Non-Political Speech: Exploring A Constitutional Model That Focuses On The Existence Of Alternative Channels Of Communication, The, Patrick M. Garry

Missouri Law Review

This Article attempts to illustrate how media entertainment speech currently possesses a constitutional advantage over the traditional political speech of physical protest. Part I discusses current First Amendment doctrines relating to permissible types of speech regulation. Although these doctrines claim to be content-neutral, they effectively discriminate against the speech of on-site political protest. Part II examines how this discrimination comes into being. Since many of the constitutional doctrines relating to speech regulation are geared to the "place" where the speech occurs, these doctrines essentially let media entertainment off the hook, since the vast majority of that entertainment has no "place" …

Medical Malpractice Reform: A Societal Crisis Or Fear Marketing?, Phil Rutsohn, Andrew Sikula Sr. Mar 2007

Medical Malpractice Reform: A Societal Crisis Or Fear Marketing?, Phil Rutsohn, Andrew Sikula Sr.

Management Faculty Research

This paper explores the primary issues surrounding the malpractice crisis currently facing the healthcare system and asks the question ‘is it truly a crisis or is it an effective marketing campaign waged by interested parties?’ The authors discuss the primary issues presented by both the supporters of tort reform and the opposition to tort reform. As is true for many issues in healthcare, final analysis suggests that tort reform is needed or not needed depends on the analysts' role in the system. The authors argue that the evidence suggests malpractice reform will produce desired results if the goal is to …
