Communication Processes In Mergers And Acquisitions, Paulina Gawryszewska
Communication Processes In Mergers And Acquisitions, Paulina Gawryszewska
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
The author pays attention to the importance of communication processes during performing such complicated organizational changes as mergers and acquisitions. Starting from the definition of the concept of communication, the types and nature of the action in the general dimension she moves on to show its importance in the life and functioning of each organization. Particular attention is given to internal communication, because of its place in the minds of workers and the role it can play in M&A transactions. The author quotes the results of research, both her own and other researchers, which prove that the communication may be …
Terminological Mediation In Information Technology And Related Fields, Jessica Smith Richards
Terminological Mediation In Information Technology And Related Fields, Jessica Smith Richards
Theses and Dissertations
Terminological dissonance is created by the inherent ambiguity of natural language and compounded by ontological specialization efforts within fields. Terminological dissonance creates high-risk miscommunications in two key areas: within Information Technology as a singular domain, and also between IT and other fields in interdisciplinary projects. A comprehensive literature review revealed a lack of previous effort to acknowledge or solve problems of terminological dissonance within Information Technology. This research provides a comprehensive overview and definition of the terminology mediation space as it relates to Information Technology and adjacent fields. An analysis and verification of the contents and implementation of the terminology …
Design, Fabrication, And Measurement Of A Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (Mimo) Antenna For Mobile Communication, Christopher Charles Arnold
Design, Fabrication, And Measurement Of A Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (Mimo) Antenna For Mobile Communication, Christopher Charles Arnold
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents the design, fabrication and characterization of a multiband uniplanar MIMO antenna for hand-held mobile communication devices on LTE, WLAN, and WMAN networks. The antenna design methodology combined a variety of broadbanding techniques that resulted in a single-layer hybrid monopole antenna coupled to a meander line element and parasitic structures. The 115×55×1.54 mm antenna was fabricated using an FR4 composite material and occupies only a fractional volume within the size of an average cellular phone allowing ample space to integrate with existing hardware. Characterization of the MIMO antenna included input impedance, scattering parameters and radiation pattern cross sections …
¿De Dónde Eres?: The Construction Of U.S. And Immigrant Culture And Identity In The Esl Adult Education Setting, Chad Perry
Communication ETDs
In this study, I investigated how lessons and interactions in an ESL classroom setting construct U.S. and immigrant cultural identities through narratives and counter-narratives, and how these narratives and counter-narratives reproduced and questioned relations of power along the lines of race, class, and gender difference. The theoretical framework for this intercultural study was informed by Co-cultural theory, CRT, LatCrit, language and power, and Whiteness studies. As the findings of the research show, the narratives constructed through language, interaction, and institutionalized practices in the ESL setting reproduced the ideology of the American Dream. The American Dream emerged as the enduring ideological …

Testing The Pub Principle: A Look At Push And Pull Communication On Facebook, Tyler Grant Page
Testing The Pub Principle: A Look At Push And Pull Communication On Facebook, Tyler Grant Page
Theses and Dissertations
This research tests the value of push and pull communication on Facebook in the first effort to test the validity of the Pub Principle and Social Intrusion Theory. This theory explains how audiences engage in a tug-of-war with commercial forces during mass communication and that commercial messaging is ultimately dependent upon the acceptance or rejection of its intended audience. The pub principle explains that social media is unlike traditional mass media and that the rules commercial forces must play by are different than for other mass media. Using a mixed-method approach, this research confirms the validity of this principle and …
Communication Risk And Strategy In Temporary Organizations, Shelley R. Mcivor
Communication Risk And Strategy In Temporary Organizations, Shelley R. Mcivor
Theses
Communication is a critical and emerging metric for successful outcomes in the high-stakes field of project management. Professional management societies have quantified financial losses caused by ineffective communication. Consulting project management exemplifies a maximum communication risk environment - misunderstanding threatens project finances, strict deadlines, and technical benchmarks - exacerbated by the complexity of a temporary organization structure.
The context of work in a temporary organization adds layers of ambiguity to project communications - an ill-structured domain in technical communication terms. Formal study of communication in temporary organizations is relatively new. Recent studies are derived from engineering and business management perspectives. …
Establishing A Department Wiki To Construct Knowledge And Community In A University Setting, Jasmine Chanel Williams
Establishing A Department Wiki To Construct Knowledge And Community In A University Setting, Jasmine Chanel Williams
Theses and Dissertations
To navigate graduate school, students rely on a social network from instructors to peers, this network is not omnipresent. In a nontraditional university setting, synchronous physical meetings can disrupt social engagement. At a commuter campus like the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), the Professional and Technical Writing (PTW) MA students need an accessible, online community enabling asynchronous collaboration to improve understanding of important theoretical concepts in rhetoric. The web 2.0 technology, wiki, is a knowledge management tool and social software that may aid students in understanding rhetoric. Because there is not currently a rhetoric wiki available, one must …

Regardless of national culture, often listening is mentioned as an important component for effective business operations. In addition, understanding how individuals of different national cultures perceive and process listening is fundamental to our global world of work. The present study used Glenn and Pood (1989) Listening Self-Inventory to examine the distracted and attentive listening behaviors of male and female managers and non-managers who worked full time inthe countries of India, Malaysia, and the United States of America (USA). Findings in this study suggestUSA females and males, in general, are less likely to be attentive listeners than the Indian and Malaysianrespondents …

Suggestion, Perception, Reality: A Study Into The Relationship Between Suggestion And The Reality It May Produce, Perception, Reality: A Study Into The Relationship Between Suggestion And The Reality It May Produce., Scott Whippo
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Suggestion is a part of communication that cannot be stripped from or be considered separate from verbal and nonverbal communication. It is through the need to view the communication processes from a complete understanding that this study investigated the possible influence that suggestion may have on an individual’s perception of reality. The existing literature was reviewed with various results from different researchers, however, much of the literature supported previous research done by Spanos et al. (1984) and Bartels et al. (2006). Their research showed some indications that suggestion, and possibly priming may have an influence on an individual’s perception. Using …
Storytelling In Art Museums, Hayley P. Trinkoff
Storytelling In Art Museums, Hayley P. Trinkoff
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Storytelling, in the context of art museums, is a method of communicating the qualities and attributes of art through a story. It helps the visitor bring the work of art to life and understand something the eye cannot see, a compelling narrative. It is important for visitors to discuss art and share stories on tours and through virtual media. We learn and form our own meanings from stories. These interactions will help build more relationships within communities. It is the museum’s job to take visitors on a journey and introduce them to new objects and perspectives.
This thesis addresses what …

Names Are Words: A Study Of Age, Gender, Class And Race, Alexandria Michelle Baker
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Just over 4 million babies are born in the United States each year, and as many people know each baby eventually gets a name. In an extension of research demonstrating both Symbolic Interaction Theory and the Coordinated Management of Meaning, through the use of semantics and pragmatics, the present study examined what names communicate about age, race, gender and class. Using data obtained from the first group of participants in Survey 1(i.e. names of each individual and their demographics), Survey 2 participants, a random sampling of Americans, were asked to look at 14 names and determine what those names communicated. …
Social Communication Of Predator-Induced Changes In Drosophila Behavior And Germ Line Physiology, Balint Z. Kacsoh, Julianna Bozler, Mani Ramaswami, Giovanni Bosco
Social Communication Of Predator-Induced Changes In Drosophila Behavior And Germ Line Physiology, Balint Z. Kacsoh, Julianna Bozler, Mani Ramaswami, Giovanni Bosco
Dartmouth Scholarship
Behavioral adaptation to environmental threats and subsequent social transmission of adaptive behavior has evolutionary implications. In Drosophila, exposure to parasitoid wasps leads to a sharp decline in oviposition. We show that exposure to predator elicits both an acute and learned oviposition depression, mediated through the visual system. However, long-term persistence of oviposition depression after predator removal requires neuronal signaling functions, a functional mushroom body, and neurally driven apoptosis of oocytes through effector caspases. Strikingly, wasp-exposed flies (teachers) can transmit egg-retention behavior and trigger ovarian apoptosis in naive, unexposed flies (students). Acquisition and behavioral execution of this socially learned behavior …
Success From The Sideline: How Communicative Processes Of Coaches' Decision-Making Styles Relate To Rugby Team Success, Kelley Sullivan
Success From The Sideline: How Communicative Processes Of Coaches' Decision-Making Styles Relate To Rugby Team Success, Kelley Sullivan
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the relationship between communication processes collegiate rugby coaches utilize when making decisions and team success. Along with measuring coaches' collaborative decision-making levels, this study explored various communication opportunities coaches report offering to players during decision-making processes. The results show there is no linear relationship between collaborative decision-making levels and winning percentage, nor is there a linear relationship between offering communication opportunities and winning percentage. Analysis revealed no one specific communication opportunity was a significant predictor variable of team success. While the variables tested did not have any correlation with college rugby winning percentage, it was found that …

As the nation’s only original re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theater, The American Shakespeare Center plays a lead role in its local area of Staunton, Virginia. The organization boasts a prominent following in the theatre and on Facebook; however, its remaining social media accounts have been stuck in the Renaissance. In November 2014, the ASC got an update in the form of a new cast member—the “What’s Your Shakespeare Personality?” quiz and web based application. Using extensive research into local demographics, audience and arts trends and social media usage, this project sought to assist the organization in the application’s launch and …

Organizational use of social media: The shift in communication, collaboration and decision-making
Social media has driven organizational communication, collaboration and decision-making in recent times. This thesis focuses first on the popularity and widespread usage of social media like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and how it has provided businesses with platforms to collaborate and communicate virtually. It then explores how organizations can implement social media for the purpose of external marketing and advertising, to connect to consumers and for the purpose of internal communications. For example, how can organizations tap the potential of social media and connect with consumers? Social media …

From Screen To School: Applications Of Children's Relationships With Film Characters To Elementary Curriculum Design, Rebecca Gayle Liss
Theses - ALL
Children have access to popular media characters virtually everywhere in their daily lives except within a school setting. With familiar animated faces on packages of food, art supplies, shoes, clothing, etcetera, children develop relationships with characters and view them as socially relevant. Given the struggling education system in the United States and the knowledge that social relevancy contributes to bettering academic engagement and achievement, this study examined how the relationship between children and media characters can be used in elementary curriculum design to potentially decrease cognitive load. This two-phased study began with semi-structured in-depth interviews with 8-11 year old children …
