An Analysis Of Enabling Techniques For Highly-Accessible Low-Cost Virtual Reality Hardware In The Collaborative Engineering Design Process, Joshua Q. Coburn
Theses and Dissertations
While there currently exists a great deal of research in the literature demonstrating various engineering applications for virtual reality (VR) and the benefits of these applications, VR adoption has been slow in part because of the high cost and resources required to setup and maintain the hardware for these applications. However, in the last 5 years, a new generation of VR hardware has emerged with cost and resource requirements which are a small fraction of previous hardware. This work begins with a survey of this newly available hardware summarizing recent advances for providing virtual input to all of the five …
Tools Of Change: Equipping Nonprofits With The Tools To Inspire Change, Nicole Irons
Tools Of Change: Equipping Nonprofits With The Tools To Inspire Change, Nicole Irons
Masters Theses
Whether I am working for a small nonprofit in Indiana or at an elephant sanctuary in Cambodia I have seen consistent areas of struggle and shortcomings in nonprofit organizations. After years of working in different organizations the struggles nonprofits consistently face are a lack of resources in three main areas. These main areas of struggle are: visibility, funding, and people. The idea then occurred to me of why? And while these resources seem to appear unconnected, what if they all stem from one problem? Could we create a tool (or set of tools) to help alleviate these main struggles? Is …

The interdisciplinary nature of climate change made this research …
Stigma And The Reluctance To Address Mental Health Issues In Minority Communities, Gary L. Kreps
Stigma And The Reluctance To Address Mental Health Issues In Minority Communities, Gary L. Kreps
Journal of Family Strengths
Health disparities are a serious problem for members of minority communities in the United States. Disparities do not only lead to negative influences and inequities in the outcomes from serious physical health problems (such as cancer, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, and diabetes) for members of minority communities, but also lead to significant problems with outcomes from serious mental health conditions (including stress-related, manic-depressive, and psychotic disorders, as well as suicidal tendencies) for ethnic and racial minority group members in the US. While current epidemiological evidence suggests that the actual rates of incidence of mental health problems is not significantly different across …

Paleoimagery: The Artistic Restoration Of Dinosaurs And Prehistoric Life, Colin Mcnulty
Honors Projects
My purpose in creating this paper is to research a holistic view of paleontological illustration (also called paleoimagery or paleoart). A thorough history of paleoimagery is outlined from its roots in biblical illustration in the 17th and 18th centuries approaching the modern day. A two-fold examination of the utility of art to communicate science and its use within the science of paleontology is also given. This includes discussions of the specific components of art pieces that help them to successfully communicate scientific ideas and examples of how paleoimagery contributes to paleontology. The author then outlines the conception and …

The Pursuit Of Happiness: Texting And Romantic Relationships, Sydney A. Fenton
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In this paper, I will be discussing how texting is a flawed medium when acting as a main form of communication in a romantic relationship. This paper is based on the theoretical framework of Dacher Keltner’s second principle of power and James A. Mackin Jr.’s takes on communication ethics. To understand the effectiveness and ethics behind these frameworks, I utilized scholarly articles and conducted a survey of over 100 participants to support my findings. These findings were categorized into strengths and limitations as they pertained to the overall happiness impacted from texting in romantic relationships. The strengths and limitations listed …

The findings of this study provide insights into the complex relationships between “othering” and students’ experiences in the classroom, and contributes to more informed …
The Perceptions Of High School Counselors' Roles In Developing A College-Going Culture, Lisa Condra Davies
The Perceptions Of High School Counselors' Roles In Developing A College-Going Culture, Lisa Condra Davies
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The role of high school counselors includes providing equitable access to college and career opportunities for students (College Board, 2011). Attending college is viewed as a national priority that includes pre-college activities to promote postsecondary access (Savitz-Romer, 2012). High school counselors may have ambiguous roles that complicates their efforts (Engberg & Gilbert, 2014). Role confusion may arise when the high school counselors are asked to provide mental health services rather than professionally focus on college acceptance and completion for students.
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of public high school counselors regarding their roles in …
The Role Of The Speech-Language Pathologist When Working With Clients Who Are Transgender: A Guide Of Gender Identity And Cultural Competency, Brett Welch
Theses and Dissertations
It is within the scope of practice of a speech-language pathologist to work with a client who is transgender for voice. However, regardless of the setting, a speech-language pathologist is likely to encounter a person who is transgender on their caseload. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association mandates that all of its members be culturally competent when working with clients from different cultural backgrounds, including those from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community.
This thesis pulls from sociological, linguistic, and queer theory literature to provide an in-depth understanding of identity, gender, and transgender identity formation. With this nuanced understanding of …

Communicating research to broad audiences is a fundamental task for scientists. Art is hypothesized to be an effective medium for improving public perception of research, as well as student comprehension and retention of scientific discoveries. To test these hypotheses, we first created an interactive art exhibit with 20 original pieces aimed at communicating findings from two recently published papers. Next, to test whether art improves public perception of research, we asked visitors of the art show to fill out surveys about their perception of research before and after visiting the exhibit. Next, using content quizzes, we tested whether interacting with …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study of social interaction in a small religious group used ethnography of communication as a research method to collect and analyze data from 20 months of fieldwork. As a long-term participant-observer in a women-only interdenominational Bible study, I investigated the group’s patterned ways of speaking, how print and electronic learning materials influenced the practical application of Scripture to daily life, and how the contemporary format for women’s Bible study alters the traditional Bible study experience. Patterned ways of speaking in this setting included group discussions and conversational narratives about religion, motherhood and lack of time. Using affirmations of faith, …

Kenneth Burke's Adolescence, 1915-1920: An Archival Study Of Influence, William Ernest Schraufnagel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation applies the method of influence studies to the archive of communication theorist Kenneth Burke (1897-1993) between the years 1915-1920. During this time, Burke was influenced by British and French aesthetic writers along with some philosophy and the writings of Cicero. As he was not conventionally trained in an academic discipline, this study shows how Burke’s theory of communication began to emerge from these disparate strands. The strongest influence on Burke during this time was the novel Marius the Epicurean by Walter Pater. As Harold Bloom’s theory of influence teaches, strong writers such as Burke “misread,” or willfully distort, their …

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro has further exposed the difference in sports reporting between sexes. Creating social media controversy, viewers called out the sexist commentary directed towards women athletes emphasizing their relationship status, how many children they have, and male athlete accomplishments over the female’s athletic ability. This content analysis will dive deeper into NBC’s prime-time coverage of the twenty-third Olympiad, examining the sport and non-sport questions brought up during interviews with the male and female athletes. With reporters possessing more control over what is discussed on-air, when compared to live commentators, the goal of this …
