The Department Of Defense Office Of Inspector General’S Seven Key Principles For Improving Our Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey Scores, Glenn A. Fine
Center for the Advancement of Public Integrity (Inactive)
Every year, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) surveys employees throughout the federal government on how they view their organizations. This survey, called the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey, or FedView Survey, asks federal employees a variety of questions about their views of their organization, managers, supervisors, and senior leaders; whether the employees believe they have the training and tools they need to do their jobs; overall how satisfied they are with their organization; and several other important questions related to employee engagement. The Partnership for Public Service then analyzes the results of the survey and ranks the government organizations on …
Gender Negotiation Among People In Poly/Consensual Non-Monogamous Relationships, Vanessa Rijo - Sánchez
Gender Negotiation Among People In Poly/Consensual Non-Monogamous Relationships, Vanessa Rijo - Sánchez
Honors Undergraduate Theses
In the United States, people are encouraged and even coerced by social forces to behave and interact according to rigid social mores that tend to privilege individuals from a specific gender, racial, and class backgrounds. As many theorists have stated, sexual, gender, and racial minorities navigate their lives experiencing oppression at different levels and at the intersections of different systems of inequality. The marginal social location of these identities often results in people re-defining the social meanings through which they construct their social lives. Although much research has been devoted to investigating the different ways in which people resist the …

Successful Strategies For Retaining Profitability In An Education-Sector It Project, Cassandra Romae Middleton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many information technology (IT) project managers (PMs) and other business leaders lack effective strategies for enhancing communication among their project team members, thereby reducing profitability and organizational cohesion. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore communication strategies that IT PMs used to successfully complete IT mobile device projects. The conceptual framework for this study was McQuail's mass communication, Craig's communication, and Deming's profound knowledge theory. Purposive sampling method was used to identify 6 successful IT PMs and leaders who worked at 2 leading educations settings located in southeastern South Carolina. Data gathered from the semistructured interviews and …
The Generation Z Handbook: A Grounded Theory Approach To Motivation In The Workplace, Justin Mahutga
The Generation Z Handbook: A Grounded Theory Approach To Motivation In The Workplace, Justin Mahutga
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Organizations must develop human capital to remain competitive in today’s economic landscape (Crook, Todd, Combs, Woehr, & Ketchen, 2011; Noe, 2017). Motivation is one aspect of human capital development that organizational research has difficulty understanding (Kovach, 1980), and given the recent introduction of Generation Z into the workforce (Ferri-Reed, 2016), this thesis seeks to understand the process of organizational motivation for Generation Z from a communication perspective. By applying grounded theory methods to 13 interviews, I illustrate several exploratory relationships within an emergent framework to describe the process of motivation for Generation Z participants. Primarily, subjects demonstrate that through the …

This study investigates the impact of perceived police accommodation on police-civilian interactions. Elaborating theoretically beyond a range of cross-cultural studies, we examine the cultural impact of accommodative communication in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and United States of America (USA), as the prior context demonstrates socio-cultural parallels and differences including the influence of Sharia law. Between-country comparisons evaluate the mediating role of trust, affect and intergroup orientation on various civic outcomes. Accommodative communication was the strongest predictor of trust for both nations and demonstrated a direct impact on moral alignment and willingness to help only in the UAE.

Self And Communication In Long-Term Romantic Relationships, Farshad Michael Sadr
Self And Communication In Long-Term Romantic Relationships, Farshad Michael Sadr
Online Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to further our understanding of how individuals in heterosexual romantic relationships resolve conflict and why the identified persuasion attempts are occurring. This study proposes a two-pathway model of how socialization predicts conflict communication strategies through self-construal and relationship goals. It is hypothesized that a) gender socialization and romantic relationship power influence the dominate type of self-construal an individual holds, b) parenting goals are more strongly predicted by relational interdependent self-construal than physical self-construal and that mating goals are more strongly predicted by physical self-construal than relational interdependent self-construal, c) direct conflict communication strategies are …

Group Development In Natural Resource Collaboration In The Crown Of The Continent: Forming, Storming, Norming & Performing, Meghan Rene Neville
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
This portfolio brings together three experiences of natural resource collaborative groups each in a different stage of development. Researcher, Bruce Tuckman, theorized that collaborative groups go through different stages in order to grow, face new challenges, tackle problems, deliver results, and become an effective team (1965). These stages of development are called Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing. The application of Bruce Tuckman’s model can help both collaborative organizers and outsiders appreciate the complex dynamics of collaborative groups. The overarching goal for my portfolio is to provide new ways to examine natural resource collaborative groups, so that there is a better …

A Look Inside The Black Box: Understanding Communicative Exchanges In Online Learning Environments, Sara Douglas
Dissertations
Participation in academic discussions and peer collaboration activities is instrumental to student engagement, motivation, and mastery of course content. These activities also improve 21st century skills, such as listening, managing diverse viewpoints, and communicating effectively. Although online learning options in the United States have dramatically increased in the past decade, there is limited evidence that online high school courses offer sufficient opportunities for students to communicate and collaborate with teachers and peers. The purpose of this mixed-methods study seeks to find out if, how, and why students interact with others in online courses. Findings from observations of five high school …

The Green Web: Evaluating Online News Communities And Their Environmentalism, Stian Himberg Roussell
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
In the past news and media were disseminated through channels that were difficult for consumers to communicate with. Now a new form of news dissemination is taking place on the internet where communication between consumers and producers exists. Crowdsourced social media sites, where users elect and vote on articles and comments to represent a topic, are creating new forms of news dissemination, which heavily alters media content, and community discussions. This study was conducted in order to better understand how crowdsourced social media platforms affect users’ perception of environmental topics, issues, and problems. It focuses on the crowdsourced social media …

Adaptive Heuristics That (Could) Fit: Information Search And Communication Patterns In An Online Forum Of Investors Under Market Uncertainty, Niccolo Casnici, Marco Castellani, Flaminio Squazzoni, Manuela Testa, Pierpaolo Dondio
Articles
This article examines information-search heuristics and communication patterns in an online forum of investors during a period of market uncertainty. Global connections, real-time communication, and technological sophistication have created an unpredictable market environment. As such, investors try to deal with semantic, strategic, and operational uncertainty by following heuristics that reduce information redundancy. In this study, we have tried to find traces of cognitive communication heuristics in a large-scale data set including 8 years of online posts (2004–2012) for a forum of Italian investors. We identified various market volatility conditions on a daily basis to understand the influence of market uncertainty …
The Deaf & Law Enforcement Listening Though Deaf Eyes: A Grounded Theory Approach, John L. Garner
The Deaf & Law Enforcement Listening Though Deaf Eyes: A Grounded Theory Approach, John L. Garner
Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the perceived and practical schism between deaf society and the police when the deaf attempt to obtain police services. The paper challenges current police culture and operating procedures, which tend to marginalize deaf society and largely ignore the mandates contained in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This qualitative research project is focused upon perceived law enforcement practices and culture through a multi-layered study of police customs, law, policy, and standard operating procedures as experienced, perceived, and reported by deaf individuals.
A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to examine the way law enforcement is perceived by …

The Impact Of Social And Cognitive Variables On Communication Competence, Griffin Cheek
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
College students are increasingly engaged in watching online videos and using social media. Therefore, researchers should attempt to better understand how these variables as well as other social and cognitive variables, affect the communication competence of students. The researcher administered a questionnaire to 392 college students from a private medium-sized West Coast university using various modified scales examining student-to-student confirmation, social support through social media, online video viewing, self-esteem, personal reports of public speaking anxiety, and communication competence. Student-to-student confirmation and online video viewing were measured using new sets of scales developed by the researcher. The data from the surveys …

Amazon Nights Ii: Electric Boogaloo-Neural Adaptations For Communication In Three Species Of Weakly Electric Fish, Kathryne M. Allen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sensory systems have to extract useful information from environments awash in noise and confounding input. Studying how salient signals are encoded and filtered from these natural backgrounds is a key problem in neuroscience. Communication is a particularly tractable tool for studying this problem, as it is a ubiquitous task that all organisms must accomplish, easily compared across species, and is of significant ethological relevance. In this chapter I describe the current knowledge of what is both known and still unknown about how sensory systems are adapted for the challenges of encoding conspecific signals, particularly in environments complicated by conspecific-generated noise. …

Climate Change Communication In The United Kingdom, Ag Anderson
Climate Change Communication In The United Kingdom, Ag Anderson
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
There is a comparably lengthy history of climate change communication research in the UK that can be traced back to the late 1980s. As is the case for media research in general, most attention has historically focused on print media and elite newspapers in particular. The British public appears to have a rather ambivalent response to climate change and most people do not view it as a pressing threat. Whilst surveys suggest that the majority of citizens believe that climate change is occurring, and is at least partly caused by human activity, sceptic views have received greater prominence in the …

Poison Ivy's Green Screen Debut: A Rhetorical Criticism On Erasing Identity On Screen, Jennifer Baney
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This project investigates the loss of power on screen for female comic book characters. Specifically, I investigate how scenes create narratives using heteronormativity and over-sexualization of female characters. The artifact of analysis included in this project is Batman and Robin (1997). This text focuses on Poison Ivy, including the background of the character before dissecting her role in the film. Turning to Sonja J. Foss (2009) and her feminist critique as a guide to understanding the implications of this research. Using feminist criticism, I argue that Poison Ivy was put in a lesser position, removed of her power, and was …

High School Band Directors' Experiences Using Social Media In The Classroom, Heidi Welch
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
While social media is becoming an innovative tool in education for teacher and student use, little is known about how social media is being used in the high school band room to communicate with students, increase student-connectedness, or improve classroom community. Using Vygotsky's theory of social constructivism, Siemens's theory of connectivism, and Wenger's community of practice theory as a framework, this study explored the phenomenon of social media as used in the high school band room for communication, student-connectedness, and classroom community. Participants included 10 high school band directors located throughout the United States who shared their experiences through 1-on-1 …

Knowledge Sharing And Customer Relations In Mobility, Katie Dyretha Moore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
After the events of September 11, 2001, inadequacies in how government organizations and agencies shared knowledge and communication with defense mission partners became readily apparent. A reasonable U.S. government information technology expectation is the integrated use of mobile phones across organizations and agencies. Yet, it is difficult to meet this expectation, as the provisioning process for mobile devices can be different for each government organization or agency. The Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology does not set provisioning standards, and organizations and agencies determine policies tailored to their particular needs. Using Schein's theory on organizational culture, the …
