Using Mock On-Call Patient Encounters To Assess Ophthalmology Resident Peer Communication And Clinical Readiness: A Pilot Study, Shravika L. Chennupati, Jonathan Barnett, Jennifer L. Lindsey, Amy S. Chomsky, John B. Bond, Edward F. Cherney, Janice C. Law
Journal of Academic Ophthalmology
Introduction
Communication between co-residents is a crucial component of success among ophthalmology resident physicians who are part of the same on-call team. However, opportunities to assess and hone communication skills during residency training are limited. We developed a novel pilot workshop to improve and assess communication and collaboration between ophthalmology trainees.
Methods
Two standardized patient scenarios were developed in which residents collaborated in a mock on-call team. Encounters took place in a simulated clinic space. Team members consisted of a PGY-2 resident, PGY-3 resident, and a faculty evaluator. A critical action checklist was used to assess learners during the encounters. …

Diverging Paths, Converging Goals Framing Crisis To Kairos In Bill Gates's And Greta Thunberg's Climate Discourse, Daniel Wuebben, Wang Emily, Emma Gomez Domingo, Juan Romero-Luis
Artículos científicos
This article introduces a typology of nine communication frames and analyzes how they operate in Bill Gates's How to Avoid a Climate Catastrophe (2021) and Greta Thunberg's The Climate Book (2022). The typology draws special attention to how non-fiction books are vehicles that can appeal for timely action (i.e. kairos), establish authorial ethos, disseminate climate science, and advocate for climate activism and energy transitions. The application of the typology highlights the books' narrative arcs: Gates and Thunberg both begin by acknowledging the reality and severity of the climate crisis and the correspondence between social progress and justice. Then, their arguments …

The New Professional: Tips For Dealing With Unpleasant Patients, Amrita Patel Dds
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This article emphasizes the importance of managing unpleasant patients in dentistry through empathy, effective communication, and tailored care. Dentists should understand that patient anxiety often stems from fear or past trauma. Building trust through clear explanations, personalized comfort measures, and pain management is crucial. Techniques like guided imagery and gradual exposure can help reduce anxiety. Consistency in care and follow-up support strengthens patient relationships, making even the most challenging patients more comfortable and cooperative.

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a rare autoimmune disease with multiâ€system involvement. It involves the upper respiratory tract, lungs and kidneys. A 36-year-old female patient presented with complaints of low-grade fever, dry cough and loss of appetite initially followed by dyspnea, purpuric skin lesions, right lower limb swelling with pain and redness. Her chest radiograph revealed right upper lobe cavitary lesion with consolidation in right lower lobe. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was detected in sputum and Broncho alveolar lavage (BAL) via Cartridge based nucleic acid amplification assay (CB-NAAT). Later, Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiography (CTPA) revealed bilateral pulmonary artery thromboembolism. Furthermore, her C-ANCA …
Cultural Motivations And Effects Of Live Game Streaming, Gordon David Littleford
Cultural Motivations And Effects Of Live Game Streaming, Gordon David Littleford
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Live game streaming combines many of the social mechanisms and cultural impacts of social media with the entertainment and social impacts of traditional media. Live game streaming (LGS) is growing in audience size and engagement. Further, the financial impact of LGS is rising to the level of Hollywood films and the music industry. As such this study focused on how the communicative environment of live game streaming impacts the live game streaming culture at large, as well as the effects on both the individual streamers and their communities during live game streams. The emergent design of this qualitative digital ethnography …

Children Sustain Cooperation In A Threshold Public-Goods Game Even When Seeing Others’ Outcomes, Patricia Kanngiesser, Jahnavi Sunderarajan, Sebastian Hafenbrädl, Jan K. Woike
School of Psychology
Many societal challenges are threshold dilemmas requiring people to cooperate to reach a threshold before group benefits can be reaped. Yet receiving feedback about others’ outcomes relative to one’s own (relative feedback) can undermine cooperation by focusing group members’ attention on outperforming each other. We investigated the impact of relative feedback compared to individual feedback (only seeing one’s own outcome) on cooperation in children from Germany and India (6- to 10-year-olds, N = 240). Using a threshold public-goods game with real water as a resource, we show that, although feedback had an effect, most groups sustained cooperation at high levels …
Placebos, Rhetoric, And The Power Of Expectation, Jennifer M. Reeher
Placebos, Rhetoric, And The Power Of Expectation, Jennifer M. Reeher
Theses and Dissertations
Placebos, Rhetoric, and the Power of Expectation examines the relationship between persuasion and health to determine what interventions rhetoric could make in the interdisciplinary field of placebo studies. This exploration of the relationship between rhetoric and placebo responses relies on non-anthropocentric definitions and theories of rhetoric as well as a multifaceted archive that includes patient narratives, clinical intake forms, and peer-reviewed scientific studies of condition-specific placebo responses. The impact of this investigation spans the practical and the theoretical. First, rhetorical study highlights the importance of a patient’s perception of care in patient recovery. To this end, rhetoric offers audience-focused methods …

Background: Accurate and timely diagnosis relies on sharing perspectives among team members and avoiding information asymmetries. Patients/Families hold unique diagnostic process (DxP) information, including knowledge of diagnostic safety blindspots-information that patients/families know, but may be invisible to clinicians. To improve information sharing, we co-developed with patients/families an online tool called 'Our Diagnosis (OurDX)'. We aimed to characterise patient/family contributions in OurDX and how they differed between individuals with and without diagnostic concerns.
Method: We implemented OurDX in two academic organisations serving patients/families living with chronic conditions in three subspecialty clinics and one primary care clinic. Prior to each visit, patients/families …

Background: Managing diagnostic uncertainty is a major challenge in primary care due to factors such as the absence of definitive tests, variable symptom presentations and disease evolution. Maintaining patient trust during a period of investigative uncertainty, whilst minimising scope for diagnostic error is a challenge. Mismanagement can lead to diagnostic errors, treatment delays, and suboptimal patient outcomes.
Objective: Our aim was to explore how UK primary care physicians (GPs) address and communicate diagnostic uncertainty in practice.
Design: This qualitative study used video and audio-recordings. Verbatim transcripts were coded with a modified, validated tool to capture GPs' actions and communication in …

Application Of New Media In Peace Building And Conflict Resolution In Nigeria, Eric Msughter Aondover, Ademolu Patrick Okuneye, Timothy Ekeledirichukwu Onyejelem
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
The role of new media in conflict prevention, resolution and escalation is now a global concern to both peace and conflict scholars and public policy makers. The kind of information the media disseminate is critical to sustaining peace and harmony in society and vice versa. New media has a long history. The media have suffered deprivation in the hands of both military and civilian regimes. However, this has not in anywhere diminished the growth of the media in all its ramifications. Traditional media genre like newspaper, radio and television has received much recognition and seminal attention, but social or new …
Exploring Hangar Flying As A Communication Practice For Vicarious Learning: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of General Aviation Storytelling On Youtube, Timothy Aaron Frizzell
Exploring Hangar Flying As A Communication Practice For Vicarious Learning: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of General Aviation Storytelling On Youtube, Timothy Aaron Frizzell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
More than 50% of general aviation accidents are caused by pilot error, often due to inadequate formal training or inexperience in real-life situations (Pilot Institute, 2023). Some scholars suggest that learning from other pilots’ experiences could supplement formal training and increase general aviation safety (Cohn, 1994; Harnagel, 2021; Krog, 2022). With this in mind, this study explored the communication phenomenon known as hangar flying, an aviation storytelling practice in which pilots share flying experiences. The goal was to investigate how hangar flying may enable vicarious learning, influence personal flying culture, and, as a result, increase flight safety. Employing a qualitative …

A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Lived Experiences Of African American Couples Attending Premarital Counseling, Jamie J. Pettis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of African American couples who completed a premarital counseling program in African American communities facilitated through local churches in New Jersey. How African American couples described their experiences attending a premarital counseling program in the African American church was the study’s central research question. The theory guiding this study was Schlossberg’s (1981) model of transition. This model offers a theoretical framework for understanding the experiences that African American couples endured in the transition from single to married. The study was a qualitative research using an interpretive phenomenological …
The Effects Of Pre-Marital Counseling, Brandi Rhymes-Proctor
The Effects Of Pre-Marital Counseling, Brandi Rhymes-Proctor
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The action research project explores the implementation of a pre-marital program at Victory Tabernacle Baptist Church in Conroe, Texas. The pre-marital counseling program equips couples with practical and impactful tools for building strong marriages. The church's 120-year history emphasizes the importance of family and Christian values, and the counseling program is a natural extension of that commitment.
Chapter Two delves into the biblical foundations of marriage, exploring God's vision for this sacred covenant, and establishes a precedent for churches that offer similar programs to their congregants. Such an understanding shapes the program's pre-marital context, ensuring couples embark on their journey …
