Inclusive Teaching Methods Across The Curriculum: Academic Resource And Law Teachers Tie A Knot At The Aals, Fran Ansley
Inclusive Teaching Methods Across The Curriculum: Academic Resource And Law Teachers Tie A Knot At The Aals, Fran Ansley
Scholarly Works
In September 1996, Laurie Zimet, Director of the Academic Support Program at the University of California at Hastings College of the Law, proposed to the rest of us – four law professors and two other academic support teachers – that we plan the Academic Support Section presentation at the 1997 Association of American Law Schools Annual Conference. Our panel topic, “Inclusive Teaching Methods Across the Curriculum,” would draw deeply from our common passion for the subject and from our diverse experiences in innovative pedagogy. But could seven of us, three of us speaking one dialect of legal education (academic support …

Impact Of A Supervisor's Use Of Compliance Gaining Strategies On Perceptions Of The Supervisor's Communication Competence., Matthew J. Witzke
Student Work
This research is an attempt to explore the relationship between the use of compliance gaining strategies and communication competence. In four video taped scenarios involving a supervisor using-a positive or negative compliance gaining strategy on a subordinate, a total of 98 respondents answered a questionnaire that included the Rater of Alter Competence (RAC) and demographic questions. The results of this study supported the notion that those who use positive compliance gaining strategies will be perceived to have a higher level of communication competence than those who use negative compliance gaining strategies. It is also noted that the age, gender, job …
Sexual Harassment Myths In Newspaper Editorials: Myth Breakers?, Judy Bokorney
Sexual Harassment Myths In Newspaper Editorials: Myth Breakers?, Judy Bokorney
Student Work
Sexual harassment is an issue that currently appears in the media on a daily basis. As the cultivation and agenda setting/priming theories argued, the media have the power to shape audiences’ behaviors, realities, beliefs, morals, and myths about issues like sexual harassment. The media can indicate to audiences what issues to think about and what issues are more important than others. Newspaper editorials have the same power to influence readers along with the opportunity to offer opinion or argument on issues. There are many myths about sexual harassment that the American society embraces, and newspaper editorials may combat or perpetuate …

The Social Construction Of Unique Caring Relationships: Metaphors And Descriptors Of Aids And Mutuality In Buddy Dyads, Renee Maday
Communication
This study explores how acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is socially constructed in buddy dyads as revealed by the written metaphors and descriptors supplied by cultural members through a survey instrument. A buddy dyad consists of a volunteer caregiver and a person with AIDS (PWA). The metaphors and descriptors that the buddies recounted provide an understanding of these special relationships and the social construction of AIDS in this uniquely affected population.
Analysis revealed that AIDS is most often constructed as integral to community and activism in the AIDS Culture. The buddy relationship is most often constructed as a friendship rather …

Sex Role Stereotyping In Children's Story Books, Joan A. Bucy
Student Work
This study assess male and female sex-role stereotyping in children's storybooks. Ten Caldecott and 10 Golden Sower Book selections from 1986 to 1995 are examined for the number of female and male lead characters; occupations, gender roles and personality traits of the main characters; the realism of character roles and storylines; and the contributions that the main character made to society. The analyst indicates that there are fewer female than male characters in the story books, that lead characters are often shown in traditional occupations and gender roles, and that female lead characters are generally shown in exotic roles and …

Executive Leadership Concepts For Higher Education, Brian Satterlee
Executive Leadership Concepts For Higher Education, Brian Satterlee
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Several key concepts shed light on the traits and processes of leadership in educational settings. First, the term leadership can be understood as the act of persuading others to set aside individual concerns and pursue a common goal, with communication representing a key ability of leaders. The communication Model provides a useful, open systems approach to analyzing the effectiveness of leader-constituent communications. In the model, the inputs of source and receiver are converted by the process of message and channel into an effective or ineffective communication process. They systemic approach to the study of leadership maintains that inputs are resources …

Interpersonal Christian Prayer And Communication, E. James Baesler
Interpersonal Christian Prayer And Communication, E. James Baesler
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Nationwide statistical polling during the past 40 years have indicated that prayer is a frequent and important activity for a majority of Americans. Yet communication scholars have yet to theoretically consider the relationship between prayer and communication. This investigation compared and contrasted a particular type of prayer, Interpersonal Christ¦·n Prayer (ICP), with a particular type of communication context, Interpersonal Communication (IC). Results suggested that ICP and IC share common ground in their dyadic nature, intentionality, and in specific communication processes, and that they differ in the nature of the relational being one is communicating with, the locus of initial intent …

Conflict Is Optional, Difference Is Not : Toward A Difference-Based Approach To Interpersonal Communication, James Arthur Gieseking Jr
Conflict Is Optional, Difference Is Not : Toward A Difference-Based Approach To Interpersonal Communication, James Arthur Gieseking Jr
Dissertations and Theses
An examination of the discussion of conflict in general, interpersonal and small group communication texts indicates that the conceptualization of conflict theory in the U.S. is increasingly dependent upon three theoretical pillars: the qualities of ubiquity, utility and necessity. A critical, deconstructive analysis of these operational characteristics in relation to the actual human experience of conflict reveals that they are more appropriately associated with the essential condition of difference, rather than conflict, and the concepts of conflict and difference are generally conflated in U.S. communication texts. The synergistic interaction of a variety of specific cultural constructs can be seen as …

Improved Communication Skills Through Customized Training Programs: An Applied Study Of Organizational Development, Angela Autumn Betke
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
As developmental training programs grow in organization life, customized training programs including observation, collaboration with management, data gathering, research of materials to be used, and evaluation become necessary. Using these, and other methods of research, consultants are able to develop programs which focus directly on the specific needs of an independent organization and its employees; This research evaluated internal organizational communication problems "by facilitating discovery and examination of the underlying symbolic structures, constraints, and opportunities of organizational life" (Kreps, 1983; Schein, 1987; 1969). The data gathered was "generated by organizational communication research to provide insight into organizational phenomena and redirect …
