The Portrayal Of Older Adults In Consumer Magazines., Bonnie M. Gill Nov 1998

The Portrayal Of Older Adults In Consumer Magazines., Bonnie M. Gill

Student Work

Images of older adults in the news and advertising media contribute to the way society learns about aging. Visual presentations become increasingly important in our society of information overload where shortcuts are taken through graphics and sound bites. Perceptions are created instantly. There has been little recent research with the portrayal and representation of our aging society in general consumer magazines during the 1990s. There have been no studies that combine both news/feature and advertising photographs. This study seeks to add to the current literature about magazine portrayals of adults over age 65 through a content analysis of four national, …

An Examination Of International Students' Communication Competence, Communication Apprehension, And Public Speaking Nonverbal Behaviors., Sarah Catherine Connors Sep 1998

An Examination Of International Students' Communication Competence, Communication Apprehension, And Public Speaking Nonverbal Behaviors., Sarah Catherine Connors

Student Work

The purpose of this thesis was to explore some of the potential relationships among communication apprehension, communication competence, and nonverbal behaviors of international students on an American campus. The PRCA-24 (Personal Report of Communication Apprehension), and the CCSR (Communication Competence Self-Report Questionnaire) were used as a means of student self report data gathering. Twenty one students from ten difference countries were videotaped as they presented a required speech after completing the self-report questionnaires. The PSNA (Public Speaking Nonverbal Assessment), which looks at the general areas of paralanguage, speaker disposition, eye behaviors and body motion, was then used by five American …

The Future Of Computing: Cyberspace, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This paper traces trends in the technological advances of computer and communication systems and examines the promises of the Information Society: global information sharing; and, intelligent decision-support. The technological developments that will lead to the realization of Cyberspace, an information rich environment in which virtual reality capabilities couple directly to the human senses, is explored in terms of five essential components: information processing requirements; communication networks; computing devices (i.e., platforms); hardware and software user-interfaces; and, the meaningful representation of information.

Attention is drawn to the critical role played by information representation in a Cyberspace environment. The author argues …

The Effect Of Biofeedback Training On Marital Communication And Physiological Arousal, Kent E. Nabers May 1998

The Effect Of Biofeedback Training On Marital Communication And Physiological Arousal, Kent E. Nabers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is well documented that the communication patterns of distressed couples are characterized by more negative and fewer positive behaviors. It has also been postulated that there is an association between physiological arousal and negative behaviors. According to this theory, as individuals become increasingly aroused, the number of negative behaviors also increases. This study explored the relationship between physiological arousal and marital communication. The three couples participating in the study received intensive biofeedback training with the hypothesis that an ability to control physiological arousal would result in improved marital communications. The Rapid Couples Interaction Scoring System was employed as a …

The Effect Of Automation On Helicopter Crew Communication: A Low-Fidelity Investigation, Margaret A. Maclsaac Apr 1998

The Effect Of Automation On Helicopter Crew Communication: A Low-Fidelity Investigation, Margaret A. Maclsaac

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Increasing levels of technology have changed the task of flying modern helicopter cockpits by allowing many crew functions to be performed automatically. This study attempted to understand the relation between automation and helicopter crew coordination. Twenty-eight helicopter pilots were assigned to two-person crews and asked to fly a simulated mission in either automated or manual conditions using a low-fidelity helicopter simulator. Communication was transcribed and coded into a nine-category content classification system by two trained raters. The inter-rater reliability was +.84. Results indicated that a higher frequency of total communications was demonstrated during manual flights.

The Rural Family Outlook Project: Family Aspects Of Transferring The Family Farm, Tonya Haigh, May Kay Helling, Ron Stover

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Farm families across South Dakota shared, in recent surveys, how they are passing on the family farm, communicating with each other, and cooperating in decision-making and responsibilities on the farm and in the home. Their experiences may help your family begin talking about these issues, by suggesting questions to discuss together – about farm decision-making, responsibilities, communication, land, and livestock ownership, and transfer plans.

Development Of An Internet Center For Wildlife Damage Management (Html.Www.Ianr.Unl/Wildlife), Scott E. Hygnstrom, Robert H. Schmidt, Paul D. Curtis, Greg K. Yarrow

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Wildlife damage problems are experienced by all segments of society. Row crops, forages, rangeland, fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, and turf are all susceptible to wildlife damage at various stages of development. Agricultural producers lose billions of dollars each year due to crop damage caused by deer, voles, blackbirds, and other wildlife species (Conover et al. 1995). In addition, over 75,000 people are injured annually or become ill in North America due to wildlife-related incidents. For most of these problems, IPM principles can be applied to reduce damage to tolerable levels. Information, materials, and services on wildlife damage management are available through …

Critical Cultural Theory, Postmodernism, And Mtv: A Feminist Rhetorical Analysis Of Female Artists., Holly Stommes Andrews

Student Work

This is a feminist rhetorical analysis of female artists' videos on MTV in the 1990's. Previous analyses support the idea that sex and sexism play a major aspect in MTV videos. However, most research on MTV was conducted in the 1980's and focused mainly on the portrayal of women in male musicians' videos. By focusing solely on female artists of the 1990's, this study proposed three research questions: Are female artists on MTV portrayed in roles that provide alternative images to traditional sexual stereotypes? Do the appearances of female artists on MTV continue to promote them as sex objects? and …
