Conference papers
A Content Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Men In Advertising: Gentlemen's Quarterly 1985-2000, Maryrose Mason
Theses
This thesis examines images of men and the products they promote in Gentleman 's Quarterly (GQ) magazine using the symbolic interaction theory of gender display developed by Erving Goffman in his monograph Gender Advertisements (1979). The study examines advertising images for evidence of sexual objectification of men, and reports on the extent different product types use gender displays to attract a male target market. 332 advertising images appearing in GQ from 1985 to 2000 were coded in ten categories of ritual display: setting, image position, image dominance, skin exposure, body portrayal, self-touch, gaze, and product type. The study concludes that …

Fraternity And Sorority Member Perceptions Of Homophily, Supportive Communication, And Group Behavior As A Function Of Control Expectancies, Andrew D. Dohanos
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of control expectancies on fraternity and sorority member's perceptions of their group. Based on a review of the literature pertinent to this investigation nine hypotheses were forwarded. Generally speaking, the hypotheses suggest that fraternity and sorority members perceptions will differ based on their control expectancies. One hundred ninety-five fraternity and sorority members completed a questionnaire that included the Three Factor Locus of Control Scale (Levenson, 1973), the Perceived Homophily Measure (McCroskey et al., 1975), the Quality of Relationship Inventory (Pierce et al., 1991), dimensions of the Group Behavior Inventory (Friedlander, …

The Reel World: A Content Analysis Of The Social Construction Of Unreality In Mtv's The Real World., Ron Frascht
Student Work
This is a content analysis of MTV' s The Real World: Season 11 Chicago. Many articles have suggested that The Real World is a produced entity using storyboards and the all important reality footage. By focusing on one season's content this study proposed four basic queries: is the cast of The Real World chosen in a way that is meant to mirror reality, or is it chosen for a calculated dramatic effect? Is the setting of The Real World a mirror of reality, or is it a constructed stage for the show? If it is a constructed stage, what are …

Instructors' Message Variables And Students' Learning Orientation/Grade Orientation And Affective Learning, Leeanne M. Bell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among instructors' message variables and students' learning orientation (LO), grade orientation (GO), and affective learning. Participants were 193 students (109 men, 83 women) enrolled in introductory communication courses at a large eastern university. Participants completed the Revised Self-Disclosure scale (Wheeless, 1978), the Humor Orientation scale (Booth-Butterfield & Booth-Butterfield, 1991), a narrative scale created for this study, the LOGO II scale (Milton, Pollio, & Eison, 1986) and the Instructional Affect Assessment Instrument (IAAI) (McCroskey, 1994). Results indicated instructors' message variables were not significantly related to students LO/GO, no significant differences among …

The Emerging Knowledge Management Paradigm: Some Organizational And Technical Issues, Jens G. Pohl
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
This paper addresses the expectations, organizational implications, and information processing requirements, of the emerging knowledge management paradigm. A brief discussion of the enablement of the individual through the wide-spread availability of computer and communication facilities, is followed by a description of the structural evolution of organizations, and the architecture of a computer-based knowledge management system. The author discusses two trends that are driven by the treatment of information and knowledge as a commodity: increased concern for the management and exploitation of knowledge within organizations; and, the creation of an organizational environment that facilitates the acquisition, sharing and application of knowledge. …

An Investigation Into Non-Verbal Sound-Based Modes Of Human-To-Computer Communication With Rehabilitation Applications, Ted Burke
Conference Papers
During the course of our work in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Ireland we have encountered patients who, while unable to speak, are capable of making reproducible utterances. We present techniques used to harness such utterances, in addition to whistling, as a means of communication and control. A simple technique for identifying the phonemes /o/ and /s/ (in single-symbol ARPAbet notation) is presented with applications. The use of pitch variation as a means of controlling a continuously variable parameter is described with two applications - a microcontroller based light dimmer switch and a computer program which facilitates mouse pointer control. …

The Use Of The Fish Philosophy Metaphor In A Changing Organization, Hilda K. Byabato
The Use Of The Fish Philosophy Metaphor In A Changing Organization, Hilda K. Byabato
Student Work
This thesis examines existing research and theory on metaphors, organizational culture and organizational change. It focuses on the application of the “Fish Philosophy” metaphor in a changing culture of an organization to determine how, when and why this metaphor is used. The analysis of discourse observed in meeting, office cubes, cafeteria as well as the content analysis of documents (newsletters, email messages, photographs, videotapes) were among the methods used to conduct this study. Metaphors and metaphoric discourse play an important pole in developing and maintaining shared meanings among organizational members while shaping and reshaping an organization’s culture and communication process. …

Writing As Conversation: The Importance Of Communication In Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy., Christie Dawn Wilson
Writing As Conversation: The Importance Of Communication In Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy., Christie Dawn Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy is a novel consumed with conversation. The conversations that the characters have with each other and the ongoing conversation between Tristram and the reader all address the importance of communication. This study examines the theme of communication as Sterne presents it in his novel. The first chapter explores the personalities of Walter and Toby Shandy with the assumption that an understanding of their eccentricities will illustrate the reasons for the difficulties they encounter when trying to communicate with others. The relationships between the sexes are the subject for the second chapter. Sterne recognized the opportunity that …

Communication
Autobiographical narratives are explored in a qualitative approach regarding women in Alaska who have been successful in long-term recovery from alcohol dependence and/or abuse. The literature review includes an integrative approach to theoretical perspectives from the disciplines of Human Communication, Anthropology, and Psychology. The epistemological orientation of Constructionism grounds this study, as well as provides a framework for theoretical understandings from the narrative co-construction of self-identity, gender studies, health belief and health behavior change models, anthropological views on alcohol and culture including Native American and Alaska Native approaches, and various psychological and transpersonal strategies for overcoming alcohol addiction. Today, a …
