The use of stories in healthcare education is a teaching-learning strategy used to provide the context of a clinical situation in a way that learners can relate the facts with the concept (Billings & Kowalski, 2016). Listening to stories, as opposed to reading a clinical case presented in a third-person view with objective clinical values, encourages learners to think critically while allowing them to react with emotions (Billings & Kowalski, 2016). The nature of stories brings the context to a person level and links actions with consequences as the stories unfold (Sherwood, Durham, & Zomorodi, 2016). Without visual cues, audio …
The Adaptive Value Of Complex Socio-Communicative Behavior, Sara A. Skiba
The Adaptive Value Of Complex Socio-Communicative Behavior, Sara A. Skiba
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
Human spoken language represents the most elaborate communication system, however the selection pressures leading to its emergence are still uncertain. Unlike humans, bonobos and chimpanzees do not have language. However, bonobos may have been subjected to similar selection pressures as early hominins, subsequent to their phylogenetic split from chimpanzees roughly 1.5 million years ago. The current study investigated the similarities and differences in sociality and communicative production between bonobos and chimpanzees in captive settings, using 9, 10-minute focal follows for each individual. Analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between social proximity score and total communicative signals produced, as well as …
Dtmf Audio Communication For Nao Robots, Kyle Poore
Dtmf Audio Communication For Nao Robots, Kyle Poore
Open Access Theses
We propose an alternative to Wi-Fi for robotic communication, as its increased use in a competition environment has lead to highly overlapping and interfering networks. This interference often causes unreliable transmission of data, which affects teams’ ability to coordinate complex behaviors. Our method uses fixed length Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF) messages and uses a basic packet structure designed to reduce data corruption as a result of noise. We conducted twelve different experiments varying the distance between robots and message format, as well as whether the robots are walking or sitting silently. Methods for scheduling messages to avoid crosstalk were …

Lenox Hill Hospital (a member of the Northwell Health System) is a comprehensive acute care facility located in New York City. It is recognized nationally for its outstanding patient care, as well as its innovative medical/surgical modalities. The market shift from volume to value based care, coupled with Lenox Hill Hospitals" own mission to provide exceptional patient centered health care with compassion and respect, is the foundation on which nursing leadership develops an environment that engenders staff contribution.
Patients" perception of their care significantly impacts their response to both Press Ganey and HCHAPS surveys, which directly correlates to incentive payments. …

Management Faculty Research
Introduction: Smartphones for clinical and medical education have been on the rise and show contribution to healthcare and healthcare providers. Smartphones in healthcare facilities has been examined for utilization and efficacy, however, although the advantages are abundant some healthcare facilities and providers are reluctant to change due to threat of mixing personal apps with clinical care applications, distraction to the provider using the smartphone which has led to medication errors followed by errors linked to procedures, treatments, or tests. The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of smartphones in a clinical setting and for medical education to …

Corporate Social Responsibility In Sports: Efforts And Communication, Daniel Erickson
Master's Theses (2009 -)
The practice of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has always been integral to sports organizations and is increasing rapidly in popularity. However, scholars have found that there is no true definition of CSR that describes what it is, whom it should help, and how it should be communicated to stakeholders. This thesis examines the CSR initiatives of four major U.S. sports leagues and their teams, as well as how these initiatives are communicated to fans and other stakeholders through the websites associated with these organizations. This study found these organizations make CSR information readily accessible to their stakeholders and participate in …

In emergency situations, it is important that information be communicated quickly, concisely, and efficiently. Breakdowns can occur when the receiver of the emergency call does not fully understand the information that the person is sending. The purpose of this paper is to present a new model for enhancing communication between the sender and receiver in emergency situations. The Universal Severity of Emergency Report (USER) is a model designed to be used in emergency situations and convey more information about the current state of the person declaring the emergency than is currently offered by emergency communication channels. USER provides three key …
Associations Between Parent-Child Relationship Quality, Parent Feeding Practices, And Child Weight Status In Preadolescent Children, Kristina Marie Duncombe
Associations Between Parent-Child Relationship Quality, Parent Feeding Practices, And Child Weight Status In Preadolescent Children, Kristina Marie Duncombe
Theses and Dissertations
The present study evaluated associations between parent-child connectedness and communication, parent perceptions of child weight, parent feeding behaviors (restriction, pressure to eat, and monitoring), and child body mass index percentile among a sample of children aged 8-12 years. To evaluate these associations, this study used a cross-sectional design and maximum likelihood (ML) structural equation modeling to examine a mediation model with parental feeding behaviors mediating the associations between parent-child relationship quality and child body mass index. Furthermore, because of the known associations between parental perceptions of child weight and parent feeding practices, models examining the mediating effects of parent feeding …

Intercultural Communication Training And Law Enforcement Officers: A Career-Span Analysis And Education Agenda, Amanda M. Franco
Communication & Theatre Arts Theses
This thesis examines intercultural communication training and law enforcement education at the local level by means of a qualitative case study. Emphasis is given to the role of perceptions in law enforcement/community interactions as a means of understanding current relations between groups, as well as the role that cultural understanding of this should play in the creation of training curricula. There is a greater societal issue relative to interactions between minorities and law enforcement, and this research seeks to highlight how training, specifically training related to intercultural communication, can be impactful toward increasing understanding and mending group relations.

Zika Virus Communication Preferences Of Pregnant Women: Beyond The Verbal, Mallory Ellingson, Allison T. Chamberlain
Zika Virus Communication Preferences Of Pregnant Women: Beyond The Verbal, Mallory Ellingson, Allison T. Chamberlain
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: Pregnant women are frequently a priority group during public health emergencies, including the current Zika virus outbreak. These women turn to prenatal care providers for health information, but providers may not have the time for discussions with every patient. Knowing alternative ways to communicate key Zika-related information to pregnant women is important.
Methods: To determine pregnant women’s preferences for obtaining Zika information from their prenatal providers, a 27-item survey was administered to 408 pregnant women at four prenatal care clinics in Atlanta between May 5th, 2016 and June 20th, 2016. The anonymous survey evaluated women’s preferences for receiving information …

Embodying Character, Adapting Communication; Or, The Senses And Sensibilities Of Epistolarity And New Media In The Classroom, Jodi L. Wyett
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
This essay describes a classroom role-playing activity that incorporates both modern social media and the tools of eighteenth-century composition. Students communicate with each other as characters in the assigned novel, by either texting, tweeting, or writing longhand with quill pens. The exercise aims to help students grasp the sometimes-elusive historical contexts of eighteenth-century writing as well as the ways in which we interpret and adapt those contexts and their attendant modes of communication when we read for meaning in our own moment. My experiences suggest that the activity is particularly effective at helping students to reflect upon their own interpretive …

The Philosopher As Parent: John Dewey’S Observations Of His Children’S Language Development And The Development Of His Thinking About Communication, Jeremiah Dyehouse, Krysten Manke
Education and Culture
Can John Dewey’s experiments at the University of Chicago’s Laboratory School teach contemporary inquirers about “learning by making?” This article warrants an affirmative answer to this query. Unlike intellectual historians who trace the source of Dewey’s and his colleagues’ 1890s pedagogies to their cultural biases, we contend that these experiments were substantially conditioned by pragmatic kinds of insights. Specifically, we argue that Dewey’s inquiries into own his children’s language development influenced the development of his early educational experiments as well as his later pragmatic communicative philosophy. On this view, the Laboratory School experiments anticipate Dewey’s later thinking about communication. If …
Impact Of Standardized Surgical Checklist On Communication And Teamwork Among Interdisciplinary Surgical Team, Regalado A., Jr. Valerio
Impact Of Standardized Surgical Checklist On Communication And Teamwork Among Interdisciplinary Surgical Team, Regalado A., Jr. Valerio
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
A surgical timeout or surgical pause (Tang, Ranmuthugala, & Cunningham, 2014) is a hospital policy in the operating rooms (ORs) which is usually performed immediately prior to a surgical incision or entrance into a body orifice. This is a final verbal confirmation of patient’s identification, planned surgery, and other critical elements to safety that involves multi-disciplinary team such as physicians, nurses, anesthesia providers, and technicians. Poor compliance in the effective performance of surgical timeout results in OR time delays, inadequate preparation of needed intraoperative apparatus, improper administration of required antibiotics, late blood product requests, etc. To improve surgical time out …
Communicationists And Un-Artists: Pedagogical Experiments In California, 1966-1974, Hallie Rose Scott
Communicationists And Un-Artists: Pedagogical Experiments In California, 1966-1974, Hallie Rose Scott
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A network of experimental workshops, classes, and schools foregrounding interdisciplinary, non-hierarchical, and process-based approaches to teaching and learning emerged in coastal California between 1966 and 1974. These initiatives embodied a new pedagogical approach that I call “communication pedagogy,” in which students were taught to exchange ideas and collaborate, rather than to produce objects. Analyzing three central case studies, Anna and Lawrence Halprin’s Experiments in Environment workshops, Ant Farm’s proposals for learning networks, and Allan Kaprow’s ‘Happenings’ course, I argue that communication pedagogy helped to foster a new paradigm for artistic practice: the artist as facilitator and network-creator. By the mid-1970s …

Consumer Agricultural Education: Starting At The High School Level Health Class, Cecilia Teresa Acosta
Agricultural Education and Communication
The purpose of this project is to analyze and understand the communication gap between the farmer and consumer in order to create a dialogue about misconceptions in the media. Often rumors in the media worry or mislead the consumer in his or her buying choices. In order for consumers to understand what they are buying, and critically analyze media information, it is necessary to teach agricultural education at the high school level health class. This project will showcase how to start this education in order to bridge the communication gap starting with five crucial and common food-packaging labels. These labels …

An Analysis Of Enabling Techniques For Highly-Accessible Low-Cost Virtual Reality Hardware In The Collaborative Engineering Design Process, Joshua Q. Coburn
Theses and Dissertations
While there currently exists a great deal of research in the literature demonstrating various engineering applications for virtual reality (VR) and the benefits of these applications, VR adoption has been slow in part because of the high cost and resources required to setup and maintain the hardware for these applications. However, in the last 5 years, a new generation of VR hardware has emerged with cost and resource requirements which are a small fraction of previous hardware. This work begins with a survey of this newly available hardware summarizing recent advances for providing virtual input to all of the five …

Tools Of Change: Equipping Nonprofits With The Tools To Inspire Change, Nicole Irons
Tools Of Change: Equipping Nonprofits With The Tools To Inspire Change, Nicole Irons
Masters Theses
Whether I am working for a small nonprofit in Indiana or at an elephant sanctuary in Cambodia I have seen consistent areas of struggle and shortcomings in nonprofit organizations. After years of working in different organizations the struggles nonprofits consistently face are a lack of resources in three main areas. These main areas of struggle are: visibility, funding, and people. The idea then occurred to me of why? And while these resources seem to appear unconnected, what if they all stem from one problem? Could we create a tool (or set of tools) to help alleviate these main struggles? Is …

Construction Management
The purpose of this report is to recommend the addition of a Spanish in Construction class to the Construction Management curriculum. Many of Cal Poly’s graduates enter a construction workforce which is composed heavily of Hispanic and Latino members. Historically, Hispanics and Latinos account for not only the most rapidly growing populations of construction, but also the most proportionally at-risk. In an industry as dangerous as construction, it is important that students are well-rounded and well-prepared to contribute as safely, efficiently, and flawlessly as possible. Thorough literature review and an interview of part-time Cal Poly lecturer and industry veteran, Eric …
