Interpersonal Communication: One Smile Away From A Lifetime Of Success, Alexander Anthony Johnson Oct 2017

Interpersonal Communication: One Smile Away From A Lifetime Of Success, Alexander Anthony Johnson

Tutor's Column

The reason I chose to write my tutors column on interpersonal communication is the application it has in every tutoring scenario. Without effective interpersonal communication skills, you might not be able to develop the feedback that is most beneficial to your peer. Instead of helping them uncover their voice and passion for writing, you might become a broken record, repeating grammar issues that they knew they had but were too lazy to fix prior to the session. As a tutor, we are expected to be masters of the English language. We can catch problems in a paper that most students …

How Zoological Studies And Semiotic Analysis Can Form A Symbiotic Relationship Via Firefly Flash Pattern In Relation To Cognitive Abilities., Elyse Hickey

2018

This analysis works to further understand the signs used in communication among the Photinus genus of fireflies, and discusses some of the implications of this investigation in regard to the cognitive thinking abilities in this species. It will describe why and how this sign communication indicates cognitive abilities. Through this interpretation I will also expand on the ways in which semiotic and zoological studies can work together to supplement areas the other may need expansion or clarification in.

Lifespan Communication And Career Development Of Black Teachers: A Socio-Ecological Approach, Veronica Whinnett Hurd Oct 2017

Lifespan Communication And Career Development Of Black Teachers: A Socio-Ecological Approach, Veronica Whinnett Hurd

Communication & Theatre Arts Theses

This thesis unlocks the lifespan story of nine Black participants as they reflected on the communicative practices that guided their career journey towards becoming a teacher. Through the lens of Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) socio-ecological development model, the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem were examined to understand the content of career-related memories and with whom or what the communicative experiences occurred with across the participants’ lifespan. This study also takes an in-depth look at how the content of the memories evolved across Erikson’s (1964) childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood developmental periods, and the influence of the proximal and distal socio-ecological environments …

Tools For Addressing The Skills Of A Communication-Challenged Extension Agent, Tamara Pellien, Rachel Lyons Oct 2017

Tools For Addressing The Skills Of A Communication-Challenged Extension Agent, Tamara Pellien, Rachel Lyons

Journal of Extension

In Extension, communication challenges often become more palpable during periods of workload shift when initiatives are started. As an Extension agent and a supervisor who found ourselves in this situation, we took steps to improve communication among members of the program team by adopting four strategies: fostering a supportive environment, defining and communicating expectations, using effective communication planning tools, and maintaining program momentum and work output through supervisor and supervisee best practices. Implementing these strategies positively affected team satisfaction and work output. Other Extension professionals in the midst of "breakdowns in communication" also may find the strategies we describe useful.

The Farming Population And Health Insurance: Educational Needs And Approaches Of Extension Professionals, Shoshanah Inwood, Emily Portman, Bonnie Braun, Scott Loveridge, Sarah Heiss, Alana Knudson

Journal of Extension

Health insurance policy has critical implications for farmers, who work in a dangerous occupation and have historically high rates of being uninsured and underinsured. Extension is well poised to respond to changing policies and provide outreach to agricultural communities. However, few studies have explored capacity within Extension to respond knowledgeably to health insurance–related opportunities. Accordingly, we conducted focus group sessions with Extension professionals to understand current efforts, resource needs, and opportunities for program development in this realm. Our findings revealed a need for knowledge building within Extension through programming collaboration and an opportunity to connect the agriculture and health insurance …

Culture And Its Importance In Mediation, Joel Lee Sep 2017

Culture And Its Importance In Mediation, Joel Lee

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

This article seeks to take the reader on this "meta-journey." It will first explore definitions and frameworks about culture before looking at how culture is important in mediation. Specific attention will be placed on the context of Singapore, and we will look at Singapore's journey to dealing with the intersection between culture and mediation. This article will then look at formulating a working model to traverse the intersections between status and belonging on one hand, and modes of communication and face concerns on the other.

Substrate-Borne Communication In Chameleons: Do Vibrations Induce Behavioral Changes?, Emily J. Hamilton Sep 2017

Substrate-Borne Communication In Chameleons: Do Vibrations Induce Behavioral Changes?, Emily J. Hamilton

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Understanding the modes of communication used by a species is essential to understanding their ecology, behavior, and evolution. Substrate-borne vibrations have been reported to be produced by the veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus), possibly implemented by use of a gular pouch. We found that veiled chameleons produced vibrations under dominance and mating behavioral contexts. We tested the sensitivity of veiled chameleons to vibrations by placing chameleons, one at a time, on a wooden dowel attached to a permanent magnetic shaker and recording each chameleon’s behavior before, during, and after a three-pulse vibrational stimulus of 25, 50, 150, 300, or 600 Hz. …

Dissertations

Political polarization is a defining feature of the contemporary American political landscape. While there is little doubt that elite polarization levels have risen dramatically in recent decades, there is some debate over the existence of a corresponding rise in mass polarization. Recent scholarship on mass polarization has cited evidence related to citizens’ positions on public policy issues, party sorting, and geographic polarization; however, questions remain as to the nature and extent of mass polarization in online spaces. Specifically, more needs to be known regarding how expressions of elite polarization influence the formation of polarized communities within social media.

Framing Constructive Feedback With The Qsen Competencies: Strategies For Educators, Gerry Altmiller

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Providing constructive feedback is challenging for many, especially because it can act as a trigger for incivility. Changing the perception of feedback allows others to receive it. This presentation demonstrates strategies to frame feedback in quality and safety language so that it can be viewed as an opportunity for improvement.

The Experience Of Parents Of Early-Returned Missionaries, Kristine J. Doty-Yells, Harmony Packer, Malisa M. Drake-Brooks, Russell T. Warne, Cameron R. John

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This paper shares the results of a mixed methods study designed to understand the lived experiences of parents of early-returned LDS missionaries. Researchers conducted two focus groups of parents (n = 7) and developed and administered a survey (n = 199). The study considered the phenomenon through the theoretical lenses of Kübler-Ross’s model of grief and Boss’s model of ambiguous loss. The results suggested that parents struggle with the early-return process, the lack of communication with mission presidents, a perceived lack of support from some church leaders and ward members, and personal adjustment to their child’s early return. Clinical implications …

Measuring The Longitudinal Communication Growth Of Learners Who Are Deafblind, Kristi M. Probst Sep 2017

Measuring The Longitudinal Communication Growth Of Learners Who Are Deafblind, Kristi M. Probst

Theses and Dissertations

The field of deafblind (DB) education has a long and rich history which includes a lack of qualified personnel to meet the needs of the population of learners. In addition, the literature base is small, lacking evidence for effective practices or methods of assessing and tracking growth with these learners. The ability to adequately track student growth is key when IEP teams are making educational decisions. Therefore, it is important to investigate the longitudinal growth of learners who are DB and the possible effects of service provision (number, type, and intensity) on communication growth. This research began the process of …

Variables Influencing Frequency Of Preschool Teachers’ Communication With Families About Children’S Learning And Development: Teacher Preparation, Structural Supports, And Self-Efficacy, Michelle Levy Sep 2017

Variables Influencing Frequency Of Preschool Teachers’ Communication With Families About Children’S Learning And Development: Teacher Preparation, Structural Supports, And Self-Efficacy, Michelle Levy

Doctoral Dissertations

Both families and teachers play an important role in preschool children’s learning and development and research has shown that both high quality preschool and family engagement in children’s learning at home improve children’s social and academic outcomes. However, it is not clear that teachers are adequately prepared or supported to communicate with families about children’s learning and development. This survey research involving 143 preschool teachers working in state or federally funded preschool programs examined the relationship between teacher preparation specific to family engagement, structural supports that provide teachers with opportunities to communicate with families, teacher’s feelings of self-efficacy related to …

Art To Being An Administration Assistant, Connie Hager Sep 2017

Art To Being An Administration Assistant, Connie Hager

Title III Professional Development Reports

The backbone to any Administrative Assistant's job is process, or ability to change a process. If there is no process, there is no organization, and with no organization comes chaos. Some of the simplest processes can become monumental tasks. According to the Organizing Your Work: New Techniques for Administrative Professionals http://www.amanet.org/training/seminars/organizing-your-work-new-techniques-for-administrative-professionals.aspx , to combat this problem take a process, and break it down step by step. Make a template to find out if the process is broken, look at what needs to be changed to get improvement, and decide what the outcome should look like. Once a process is broken …

Excerpt: It’s July 26, 2010, late. I’ve sunk onto the edge of the bed in my childhood home. The bedroom reminds me of one of those cozy, pretty Valentine’s Day shoeboxes I made back in elementary school: small, pink, white, flowery.

Writing For Strangers: Structural Transformations Of The Public Letter, 1640-1790, Shang-Yu Sheng Sep 2017

Writing For Strangers: Structural Transformations Of The Public Letter, 1640-1790, Shang-Yu Sheng

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines public letters in England during the period spanning the English Civil War to the French Revolution, showing how authors employed the printed epistolary form to imagine different relations with the “stranger readers” who constituted the nascent reading public. I employ a formalist approach to analyze the various rhetorics made possible through the public letter’s framed structure, focusing on the assemblages of the narrative positions of letter writer, addressee, and reader. Each chapter describes a mode of the public letter in socio-spatial terms: spectacle, network, community, and public. Building on studies in book history and print culture, this …

Song Rhythm Development In Zebra Finches, Julia Hyland Bruno Sep 2017

Song Rhythm Development In Zebra Finches, Julia Hyland Bruno

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation investigates song-rhythm learning in songbirds. Songbirds have been studied extensively in mechanistic investigations into the sensorimotor underpinnings of the cultural transmission of learned vocalizations. While several studies identified forebrain song-system neurons that generate rhythmic song patterns, we know little about how song rhythms are learned. The first part of the dissertation describes methods for detecting and analyzing birdsong rhythm patterns, and demonstrates their utility for identifying the role of song rhythms in social interactions. Results suggest that rhythm plasticity in zebra finch song may provide a potential vehicle for communication. Controlled song-learning experiments further found that developing zebra …
