Systemic Social Media Regulation, Frank Fagan
Systemic Social Media Regulation, Frank Fagan
Duke Law & Technology Review
Social media platforms are motivated by profit, corporate image, long-term viability, good citizenship, and a desire for friendly legal environments. These managerial interests stand in contrast to the gubernatorial interests of the state, which include the promotion of free speech, the development of e-commerce, various counter terrorism initiatives, and the discouragement of hate speech. Inasmuch as managerial and gubernatorial interests overlap, a self-regulation model of platform governance should prevail. Inasmuch as they diverge, regulation is desirable when its benefits exceed its costs. An assessment of the benefits and costs of social media regulation should account for how social facts, norms, …

Connected Alerts Across Manufacturing Facilities, Jordan J. Moy
Connected Alerts Across Manufacturing Facilities, Jordan J. Moy
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
The lack of communication during a large project can result in costly delays when striving to achieve previously defined benchmarks. Often times, each part of a project will require verification from an employee of a specified area of expertise before being allowed to advance to the next stage. Finding these individuals can be extremely hard due to the large, spread out campus of manufacturing facilities as well as the numerous projects the company is concurrently working on. These floor support requests can sometimes take from an hour to even a whole work day, causing major delays in the production schedule. …

Background: The ubiquitous use of electronic health records (EHRs) during medical office visits using a computer monitor and keyboard can be distracting and can disrupt patient-health care provider (HCP) nonverbal eye contact cues, which are integral to effective communication. Provider use of a remote medical scribe with face-mounted technology (FMT), such as Google Glass, may preserve patient-HCP communication dynamics in health care settings by allowing providers to maintain direct eye contact with their patients while still having access to the patient’s relevant EHR information. The medical scribe is able to chart patient encounters in real-time working in an offsite location, …
A Communication Guide For Ex-Offenders, Richard Anthony Contreras
A Communication Guide For Ex-Offenders, Richard Anthony Contreras
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Incarceration rates and the release rate of ex-offenders into the community are both increasing. Studies have shown, on a consistent basis, that, while incarcerated, ex-offenders experience lower literacy levels than the general population, suffer emotional and mental distress from a harsh prison life, and suffer from the negative effects of public perception. Ex-offender anger abounds. These factors interfere with an inmate’s ability to communicate effectively. Notwithstanding, upon release from custody, how do we help such ex-offenders communicate? Many handbooks exist to help former inmates. However, the vast majority only offer assistance with locating government social services agencies, obtaining documents, and …
Communication And Trust In Virtual And Face-To-Face Teams, Anthony Lee Baker
Communication And Trust In Virtual And Face-To-Face Teams, Anthony Lee Baker
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Virtual teams (VTs) accomplish shared goals by relying on technology-mediated communication to counteract geographic disparities. Rapid advances in technology have led to the near-ubiquity of VTs within modern organizations, but gaps in existing research designs afflict extant empirical VT research. This experiment evaluates the constructs of trust, communication, and effectiveness in VTs. Two-hundred six participants (103 teams) completed an interdependent task either face-to-face, mediated by a videoconferencing telepresence robot, or mediated by a voice call. I collected measures of cognitive trust, trust propensity, communication quality, and team effectiveness, and conducted in-depth communication analyses. Results suggest that while virtual teamwork does …

Understanding The Factors Influencing The Perception Of Organizational Sustainability Among Healthcare Professionals (Hcps) Post The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act, Funso A. Olufade
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background and Purpose of the Study: Healthcare costs in the United States has continued to increase annually, and new policy's attempt at protocol changes in healthcare practices does not ensure quality care delivery. An example of these policies include provisions and new guidelines under the 2010 healthcare legislation, - The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). The premise with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is increased healthcare access for patients. However, not responsibly balancing the increased demand with the escalating cost of care creates an unsustainable system (Department of Health & Human Services, 2015). Healthcare organizations, including hospitals …

Beyond A Checklist: Development Of A Music Therapy Method For Use With A Population With Developmental Delays And Physical Disabilities, Andria Thomas
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Music therapy has long been used within school settings, particularly within special needs populations. Until the late 1970s students with special needs were usually institutionalized with the belief that they were incapable of continued learning. Since then, music therapy has become a useful clinical medium to assess and aid in treating speech deficits, various cognitive impairments, and physical rehabilitation. This capstone thesis centered on how individuals with significant cognitive and physical impairment interact, communicate, and participate in everyday situations, specifically within a music therapy group setting. Overall, the observations show the usefulness of assessment as a music therapy tool as …
Creating A Healthy Work Environment Using Communication And Recognition, Rachel A. Coicou
Creating A Healthy Work Environment Using Communication And Recognition, Rachel A. Coicou
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Working in a healthy environment is of interest to nurses at every level of employment. Whether a frontline nurse or a nurse executive, it just feels better to wake up each morning and go to work in a place that respects clear communication and recognizes the great work that is being done. Working in such an environment is engaging and encourages employees to thrive (Shirey, 2006). Teamwork, camaraderie, and work satisfaction will increase in a healthy environment (Hall, Doran, & Pink, 2008). Thus, nurse leaders’ imperative is to meet the obligation of creating a healthy work environment (HWE) for the …

Improving The Use Of The Integrative Healing Approach, Kristina Horak
Master's Projects and Capstones
The Integrative Healing Approach (IHA) is an initiative that promotes holistic healing and includes the use of essential oils, deep breathing techniques, and therapeutic touch. Its purpose is to relieve pain, anxiety, insomnia, and depression among patients, and stress among staff. The IHA pilot initiative was implemented on the Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) and faced barriers to implementation after the first round of staff education. By rounding with staff and conducting surveys, it was identified that the staff are not using IHA interventions as often due to time constraints. Additionally, there is an identifiable rift between Registered Nurses (RNs) and …

The overall purpose of this study was to increase collaboration across USD’s decentralized graduate admission departments through the approach of caring leadership (Uusiautti, 2013). The study was guided by the overarching question: How can I use caring leadership (Uusiautti, 2013) within academic affairs to encourage effective collaboration and understanding and foster a sense of community across departments? It was also guided by the sub-questions: Does gender impact the practices of collaboration and exchange of ideas within decentralized admission offices? If so, how does the current culture and structure of USD’s graduate admission offices aid/impede the practice of caring leadership (Uusiautti, …
A Church’S Approach To Intercultural Communication Encounters In Short-Term Missions, Carolotta Anweiler
A Church’S Approach To Intercultural Communication Encounters In Short-Term Missions, Carolotta Anweiler
Communication ETDs
The prevalence of short-term mission trips by churches and/or faith-based organizations has increased tremendously (Howell & Door, 2007, Anaheier & Themudo, 2005). However, no research has been completed on the training offered to in preparation for these types of trips, specifically, training for intercultural trips. I joined a church on their short-term mission experience to examine as a participant observer how they were trained to interact with people of another cultural group and then, how the training affected the interactions on the trip.
Through the use of Grounded Theory, I examined the discourse used in the trainings offered and throughout …
Understanding Lists: Umberto Eco's Rhetoric Of Communication And Signification, Susan Mancino
Understanding Lists: Umberto Eco's Rhetoric Of Communication And Signification, Susan Mancino
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project, Understanding Lists: Umberto Eco’s Rhetoric of Communication and Signification, begins and ends with an observation and warning suggested throughout Eco’s work: lists are the origin of culture and the Internet as the Mother of All Lists threatens to end culture. To understand this warning, I turn to Eco’s work on lists, contextualized within a 2009 exhibition at the Musée du Louvre and in an illustrated collection, The Infinity of Lists. This project offers an analysis of Eco’s understanding of lists concurrent to his commentary on the social and cultural implications of the algorithmic-obsessed Internet age. To understand …
The Impact Of English Language Study On Intercultural Sensitivity, Ethnocentrism, And Intercultural Communication Apprehension Among Chinese Students, Yiran Dong
Master of Arts in Communication
Because of globalization, internationalization and diversification, abetted by the rapid development of science and technology, geographic distance is becoming a less influential factor in communication. As more and more international students go to study in different countries all over the world, it is inevitable for native students to communicate and interact with those students from different cultural backgrounds. Under such circumstances, it is vital to understand the factors that contribute to students’ intercultural sensitivity and the impact of intercultural sensitivity on ethnocentrism and intercultural communication apprehension among Chinese students (in the case of this study) for the sake of developing …
An Exploration Of The Rapid Prompting Method For Students With Autism, Shea Manship
An Exploration Of The Rapid Prompting Method For Students With Autism, Shea Manship
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The Rapid Prompting Method (RPM) was created by Soma Mukhopadhyay as an attempt to provide a way for individuals with autism to learn and communicate. The method has been said to give students with autism a means of communication. A facilitator quickly provides verbal prompts to the individual, who then spells out messages on a letter board or a keyboard. Very little research has been done on RPM, and it is not considered an evidence-based method. Many professionals believe that RPM is not a valid method of communication, largely due to the striking similarities it has with Facilitated Communication (FC). …

The website displays the results of the survey, explains climate change information that is relevant to Gloucester County, and gives examples of local actions to help increase engagement in climate solutions. In addition to the website, I …
Standardized Patient Handoff Tool, Matthew Marten
Standardized Patient Handoff Tool, Matthew Marten
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Patient handoffs are defined as the transmission of information and accountability between teams and individuals. These handoffs can be periods of increased risk for the patient and increased errors among anesthesia providers and PACU nurses (Segall et al., 2012). The Joint Commission recommends healthcare providers improve patient handoff as a national goal (Robins & Dai, 2015). The purpose of this nursing doctoral project was to determine if using a standardized patient handoff tool could improve communication and satisfaction between anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and PACU nurses. A review of the current literature supported the need for a standardized patient handoff tool for …
Effects Of Transitional Care Management On Hospital Readmissions, Samantha Dunkirk
Effects Of Transitional Care Management On Hospital Readmissions, Samantha Dunkirk
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Primary care providers are challenged to identify strategies to decrease hospital readmissions. Transitional care management (TCM) services can improve communication and allow primary care providers (PCP) an opportunity to meet with patients just after discharge to assess needs and prevent readmissions. A TCM protocol was evaluated at a large Midwestern clinic to determine if communication improved and readmissions decreased. The protocol consisted of notifying the PCP upon admission and discharge to the hospital, communicating with the patient or family within 48 hours of discharge, and facilitating a follow up visit with the primary care provider within 14 days of hospital …
“We Make Death Look Pretty”: A Qualitative Study Analyzing Reported Effects Of Compassion Fatigue On Hospice Nurse-Patient Communication, Katherine Harville
“We Make Death Look Pretty”: A Qualitative Study Analyzing Reported Effects Of Compassion Fatigue On Hospice Nurse-Patient Communication, Katherine Harville
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Rationale: Compassion fatigue is present in multiple nursing fields, but hospice poses a significant threat to nurses working within that specific environment. This is due to their consistent proximity with patient suffering, death and dying, and constant communication with patients regarding their death. The hospice nurse-patient relationship requires a deeper connection between nurse and patient which often results in consistent emotional labor for hospice nurses, further amplifying the threat of compassion fatigue. While the effects of compassion fatigue can manifest in many forms, it is typically characterized by a nurses’ decline in job satisfaction, which they do not tend to …

Improving Nurse-Patient Communication Using The Teach-Back Method, Sheila Revis Smallwood
Improving Nurse-Patient Communication Using The Teach-Back Method, Sheila Revis Smallwood
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Effective nursing communication considers health literacy, the person’s ability to understand and make health decisions based on the information given. Health professionals often overestimate the health literacy of patients, thereby affecting patient outcomes. In a hospital environment, patients rate the ability of the nurse to explain things in a way patients understand by completing the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) after discharge. The HCAHPS results are converted to a score which is used in a formula to determine hospital reimbursement; the lower the score, the lower the reimbursement. The purpose of this project was to improve …
