The Making Of Transpacific Video Art, 1966–1988, Haeyun Park
The Making Of Transpacific Video Art, 1966–1988, Haeyun Park
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is the first English-written study that narrates the development of video art through a transnational and inter-regional analysis of Japanese, Korean and Asian-American artworks from the ‘60s to the ‘80s, which played a central role in establishing video as a truly international visual language. My transpacific approach to video art contests nation-based studies of art history and challenges the transatlantic narrative of video art in Anglo-American art historical literature, which has focused on the relation between video art in Western Europe and North America. I articulate the Transpacific as a geopolitical and an intellectual model of interaction between …

Exploring Tech Tools And Productivity Apps, Lauren Puzier
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
Technology is continuously changing, and there are always new tools and mobile apps to test out. There are tools for everything from productivity, audio, communication, content creation and design, coding, automation, VR, video, etc. As many libraries have shifted to remote operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, daily workflows have changed. The NMRT Online Discussion Committee asked members what tools they have found useful in their work at the library or home over the past year. Members shared tools they were interested in trying and which apps help their daily workflow.

The Role Of Parents And Teachers In Communication Skill Development Of Students With Intellectual Disability And Speech Delay (A Case Study At State Elementary School Junrejo 02 Batu)., Gita Ayu Swastika, Asep Sunandar, Henny Indreswari
Journal of ICSAR
Parent and teacher hold an important role in children's communication development. Both of them have a time to spend with the children, parent almost take a whole time with their children in the home while teacher has a mean time in the school. The method used is qualitative methods of case study research. Collecting the data, doing an interview, observing, and documenting was used as main instrument. The steps to do a data analysis was reducing data, presenting data, and drawing the conclusions. Meanwhile, the data validation used the triangulation technique (technique triangulation and source triangulation) and member check. It …

Bayesian Persuasion With Lie Detection, Florian Ederer, Weicheng Min
Bayesian Persuasion With Lie Detection, Florian Ederer, Weicheng Min
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We consider a model of Bayesian persuasion in which the Receiver can detect lies with positive probability. We show that the Sender lies more when the lie detection probability increases. As long as the lie detection probability is sufficiently small the Sender's and the Receiver's equilibrium payoffs are unaffected by the lie detection technology because the Sender simply compensates by lying more. When the lie detection probability is sufficiently high, the Sender's (Receiver's) equilibrium payoff decreases (increases) with the lie detection probability.
Beyond Prognosis Communication: Exploring The Existential Dimensions Of Palliative Care Conversations With Adults With Advanced Cancer, Elise C. Tarbi
Beyond Prognosis Communication: Exploring The Existential Dimensions Of Palliative Care Conversations With Adults With Advanced Cancer, Elise C. Tarbi
Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports
Prognosis communication appears to be one key mechanism to achieve the benefits of palliative care (Norton et al., 2013; Thomas et al., 2018). As prognosis communication entails confronting mortality, which can provoke existential concerns (Solomon, Greenberg, & Pyszczynski, 2015), the purpose of this project was to examine the existential dimensions of palliative care conversations involving prognosis communication. This purpose was accomplished through the following aims: (1) Describe how patients, families, and clinicians communicate about existential experience in palliative care conversations; and (2) Explore the intersection between prognosis communication and existential dimensions of conversation.

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: Millennials, born between 1982 and 2000, became the largest share of the American workforce in 2015. As of 2014, 23.9% of American occupational therapists were under the age of 30. Positive traits ascribed to millennials include: highly educated, ambitious, confident, and optimistic. However, indicators of challenges for managing millennials emerge from media and anecdotal evidence, including stereotypes of disloyalty, entitlement, dependency, and casualness. Relevant for supporting professional development is a call to understand and enhance professional communication.
Method: This study analyzed how emerging millennial occupational therapists self-describe their professional communication profile and needs, compared to the perspective …

The Impact Of Gay Social Networking Applications On Dating In The Deaf Gay Community, Brian Cheslik, S. Jordan Wright
Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications
Dating between Deaf gay men who are American Sign Language (ASL) users and hearing gay men who use spoken language has historically been a challenge, creating a binary in Deaf-hearing relationships. The dating game has been revolutionized by the creation of geo-social networking (GSN) apps, where people communicate through the medium of written English and digital photographs. Furthermore, GSN apps have created a network for meeting other men who identify as Deaf and gay, as well as revealing the existence of a sexual fetish for Deaf partners. The main research question driving this investigation is: What are the impacts of …

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects
A rise in complications at a southeastern level one trauma center had the trauma department and performance improvement personnel looking for a cause and a solution. It was determined through data mining that the patient population that was driving certain complication cohorts above acceptable levels was the injured elderly patient admitted by the non-surgical hospitalist group. Patients admitted by this group commonly sustained a single injury, mostly hip fractures. Elderly patients are admitted by this group in efforts of successfully managing the many co-morbidities these patients typically possess with co-management by the orthopedic group to manage the injury. A meeting …

Togetherness For Mission In Catholic Secondary Schools, Jonathan Mangar
Theses and Dissertations
Relationships are central to education, especially in Catholic schools, where love for others is espoused as a core value. Most studies of professional relationships among educators are focused on routines, processes, and classroom standards. The present study aims to expand this discussion into the human, social, and spiritual dynamics of working together toward mission fulfillment. The purpose of this qualitative work was to explore and describe the professional relationships among teachers and administrators in private Catholic high schools in a large metropolitan diocese and to investigate how these relationships led to mission fulfillment. The study incorporated the theoretical frameworks of …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A communication disorder impacts the ability to express or understand language. The American Speech Language Hearing Association estimates that 5-10% of people in the United States have a speech or language disorder. A communication disorder may exist alone or as part of another developmental disorder, such autism, or a developmental cognitive disability. Individuals diagnosed with disabilities that include communication deficits have increased challenging behaviors compared to neurotypical peers. A common belief is that all behavior is communication. This paper discusses research linking communication disorders and challenging behaviors with recommendations for interventions that support communication with the goal to decrease challenging …
Communication At The Core: Exploring Decision-Making When Communication Is At The Heart Of An Organisation’S Strategy Development, Sinead Hewson
Communication At The Core: Exploring Decision-Making When Communication Is At The Heart Of An Organisation’S Strategy Development, Sinead Hewson
Theses
This investigation considers whether the position, territory and scope of the public relations function in organisations influences strategic thinking, decision-making, and results. Scholars say communication is a strategic management function and has a significant role to play (Grunig J.E., Dozier and IABC Research Foundation 1992, pp. 325–356; Kitchen, 1997, pp. 43–73). Yet, the strategic expertise of communicators is neither understood nor acknowledged outside of the sector. The study’s investigation into the issue and level of access to industry opinion-makers adds to the strategy discussion, while the proposed model of Adaptive Communication contributes to new knowledge.

Covid-19 Archive: Exhibits
Our exhibit engages with a number of distinct themes, and this thematic range reflects the evolution of our inquiry and points of exploration. However, the common thread that ties our exhibit together is public communication. We have centered local institutions in this exhibit, and we hope through exploring our collection you will feel encouraged to consider how COVID-19 has changed the way communities and institutions interact, and howthis interaction, in turn, has changed how we experience the pandemic. Moreover, we hope you will come to consider how these shifts in both method and content of communication are made manifest in …

Watch Your Language: How A School District's Failure To Provide Meaningful Communication Has Impacted Students During The Pandemic, Amy Leipziger
BYU Education & Law Journal
This article examines some of the obstacles that LEP parents have experienced with the NYCDOE during the pandemic, the impact these obstacles have had on their children’s education, and whether the NYCDOE’s refusal to provide language access amounts to a denial of a sound basic education under state constitutional law.12 I chose to focus primarily on New York City because it boasts the nation’s largest school system, with nearly 1.1 million students, and is comprised of 1,876 schools.13 A large share of these students have significant language needs. In New York state, forty-six percent of children in low-income families have …

Elaboration And The Logical And Affective Responses To Flood Risk Messages: Elaboration Likelihood Model And Information Processing Perspectives, Ayanna Eastman
Faculty Works
The loss of property and life following tragic events, such as flooding in the United States, demonstrate the frequent ineffectiveness of official risk communication strategies. Few studies have focused on the cognitive processes that impact individuals’ decisions upon receiving risk messages prior to flooding events. This study focuses specifically on the content of public service announcements (PSAs), elaboration and the logical and affective responses elicited by flooding and assesses individualized responses to varying message formats. It does so through the frameworks of the Information Processing Theory (IPT) and Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) by examining the impact of flood risk messages …

Background: The social context is critical to children’s pain, and parents frequently form a major aspect of this context. We addressed several gaps in our understanding of parent–child interactions during painful procedures and identified intrapersonal contributions to parental affective responses and behaviors. We used the pain empathy model framework to examine parent–child interactions during venipuncture to determine predictors of parent distraction and reassurance. Aims: We examined relations among parent and child behaviors along with parent fear and child pain and fear. We empirically tested the contribution of top-down influences in predicting the use of two common parent utterances, reassurance and …

"Everyone's Always Going Through Something, Aren't They?": J.D. Salinger, Sally Rooney, And The Desire To Connect In The Face Of Distress, Emily O'Malley
Honors Program Theses
Literature is often centered around the human desire for connection and the struggle to understand one another. This tension is heightened in novels centering adolescents and young adults, who are often insecure in their own identities. J.D. Salinger's fiction is a hallmark of this thematic exploration, yet he fails to interrogate dimensions of gender and class in a meaningful way. Sally Rooney's contemporary work subverts Salinger's within plot structure, distanced communication as a device, and self-synecdoche of distress, as well as her open engagement with class and gender. She demonstrates the power of reckoning with one's own identity, revealing how …
