It is anticipated that by the end of the course students will have: l. Grown in their knowledge and love for God through the study of Christian theology. Course Description (highlights on our journey) "The Pastor and Christian Discipleship" points us in several directions (which is appropriate, since pastors and Christian educators are usually running in about a dozen on any given day). We’ll look at roles and responsibilities of the pastor or Christian education minister in the teaching and learning ministries of the church. You can anticipate navigating through biblical, theological, and social science models of teaching, learning, and faith developing. Lay ministers (volunteers) require nurturing, training, and guiding. Their involvement and your support of their discipleship ministries are crucial in the faith community, so we’ll turn …

Welcome to Foundations of Christian Discipleship. I am so glad you have elected to take this course. While the title of the course suggests a beginning point, I want you to know that it will be broader than just a beginning point. By the end of the semester you will have developed a better understanding of what it means to help the church develop into a stronger, more intelligent, spiritually deep family of believers who are able to articulate their faith. However, do not make the mistake of thinking this is a specialized course. It is a course that broadly …

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it" (Proverbs 22:6 NIV). These words may have occupied the thoughts of Dr. Martin Luther when he wrote, "If all manner of problems are to be dealt with successfully, then the young people who are to live and govern on this earth after us must be trained and guided accordingly." This paper addresses the training and guidance of youth in the church with a view to properly preparing them for the college experience at state or private universities where the academic …

You answered God’s call and came to seminary to prepare for ministry. How will that happen? Before you graduate you will read scores of books, sit through hundreds of hours of classes, write papers and pass exams. But that will not guarantee preparation for ministry. Your spiritual and vocational formation is the heart of preparation for ministry. A servant of God is formed through the integration of Being, Knowing, and Doing. It takes place in community, as God graciously works in and through each person. Formation calls for biblical/theological and theoretical foundations, the developing of ministry skills, the doing of …
