Children's Preferences For Text And How These Preferences Contribute To Classroom Literacy Events, Linda June Johnson Jan 1993

Children's Preferences For Text And How These Preferences Contribute To Classroom Literacy Events, Linda June Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In an exploratory study, I examined young children's text preferences in the classroom and how those preferences contributed to three literacy events: read-alouds, independent reading, and writing. Emergent literacy, interest theory, text structure, and teacher decision-making in literacy instruction provided a framework. Data about children's preferences were compiled and three case children were then studied over five months. Videotaped observations, audiotaped interviews, record booklets, artifacts of student work, and field notes were collected. The classroom teacher and librarian were interviewed and observed to determine how their literacy decisions influenced the study. Findings indicated that the children had mainly fiction interests …

Foster Parent Adoption: Preparing Children Through The Use Of Life Books, Veronica Fiscus Jan 1993

Foster Parent Adoption: Preparing Children Through The Use Of Life Books, Veronica Fiscus

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The trend of foster parent adoption is increasing as more children are placed in foster care requiring a permanent family. This is an exploratory study focusing on foster children who are being adopted by their foster parents and their need for adequate preparation. In this study, a group of four children were prepared for adoption through the utilization of Life Books. Upon completion of the group, all of the subjects improved with respect to: knowledge of genealogical background, understanding reason for placement in foster care and comprehension of adoption. Adoption preparation is a preventative service that has been supported by …

The Role Of Affective Information In The Sociomoral Development Of Preschool Children, Noelle Susanna Wiersma Jan 1993

The Role Of Affective Information In The Sociomoral Development Of Preschool Children, Noelle Susanna Wiersma

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Early theories of social-cognitive development emphasized children's unilateral respect for rules and authority (Piaget, 1932/65). Recently, however, children have been found to make conceptual distinctions among moral, conventional, and personal events. These distinctions are hypothesized to be related to the differential judgments that 6- to 8-year-old children have been shown to make about the emotional experience of others in these types of events (Arsenio & Ford, 1985). However, it is not known if preschoolers make similar distinctions between the affect of various participants in different event-types. The judgments of preschoolers regarding the affect of participants in sociomoral events were examined. …

Implementing Custody Mediation In Family Court: Some Comments On The Jefferson County Family Court Experience, Louise Everett Graham Jan 1993

Implementing Custody Mediation In Family Court: Some Comments On The Jefferson County Family Court Experience, Louise Everett Graham

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The Jefferson Family Court's custody mediation service was developed as part of a larger program creating the first family court system in Kentucky. The mediation service's connection with the Family Court has influenced both practical and policy aspects of its development. Any description of the mediation project necessarily entails some description of the court system that created it.

This Article describes the structure of the Jefferson Family Court and the custody mediation process as it has developed in Jefferson County. A review of one community's approach to custody mediation may be useful not only as a blueprint for a system's …

Evaluating Daily Life Stressors In Children: Parent-Child Agreement, Julie Foutz Beasley Jan 1993

Evaluating Daily Life Stressors In Children: Parent-Child Agreement, Julie Foutz Beasley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Although a large amount of research has been reported regarding the effects of stressful life events (i.e., divorce, severe illness) on children, only a small amount has addressed the measurement of daily life stressors (i.e., school, home, social activities). More specifically, the issue of parent-child agreement on childhood daily life stressors has been relatively unexamined. The present study examined 98 child, adolescent, and parent reports of childhood daily stress. Results indicated that parents underreport daily stress for their children. Specifically, fathers report lower levels of child stress, while mothers overestimate negative affectivity. Finally, younger children reported more daily stress, especially …

Evolution And Revolution In Family Law, Victoria M. Mather Jan 1993

Evolution And Revolution In Family Law, Victoria M. Mather

Faculty Articles

Family law has significantly changed over the last twenty-five years, and certain areas will likely continue to change. Family law tends to follow, rather than lead, social upheaval and adjustment in family decisions and structures. The most important legal changes in family law are a result of massive shifts in American social, political, and economic constructs in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Family law will continue to evolve because of three critical developments. First is the expansion of the concept of what constitutes a “family” in the modern context. Next is the treatment of children as autonomous individuals, separate and …

The Simultaneous Presentation Procedure: Use In Selecting Reinforcers For Behavioral Intervention, Daniel Houlihan, Robert Bates-Purple, Robert N. Jones, Howard N. Sloane Aug 1992

The Simultaneous Presentation Procedure: Use In Selecting Reinforcers For Behavioral Intervention, Daniel Houlihan, Robert Bates-Purple, Robert N. Jones, Howard N. Sloane

Psychology Department Publications

Used a simultaneous presentation procedure to select quality reinforcers for 2 identical twin boys (aged 4 yrs) in a summer school program, who were developmentally delayed, noncompliant, and mute. Use of the simultaneous presentation procedure quickly and efficiently helped determine each boy's preferred reinforcer. This preferred reinforcer was then used in an instructional task. For both Ss, the percentage of compliance increased over baseline levels during both the simultaneous presentation and preferred reinforcer phases. However, increased compliance was associated almost exclusively with the selection of each S's preferred reinforcer. The simultaneous presentation procedure may enable trainers to use positive reinforcement …

Religion And Child Custody, Carl E. Schneider Jun 1992

Religion And Child Custody, Carl E. Schneider

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

In this Essay, I want to reflect on some problems at the intersection of religion, law, and the family. Specifically, I will explore the ways courts may consider a parent's religiously motivated behavior in making decisions about the custody of children. More precisely still, I will ask two questions. First, may a court refuse to award custody because of a parent's religiously motivated behavior in a dispute between a natural mother and a natural father? Second, when should a court agree to resolve a dispute between divorced parents over the religious upbringing of their children? These are topics of quiet …

Crisis Intervention: An Evaluation Of Services Provided To Families Of Sexually Abused Children In Davis County, Utah, Karen Louise Letts May 1992

Crisis Intervention: An Evaluation Of Services Provided To Families Of Sexually Abused Children In Davis County, Utah, Karen Louise Letts

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study assessed the extent to which victim families are or are not helped by the support services in Davis County, Utah. A sample of 29 mothers of sexually abused children indicated that existing intervention services were greatly underutilized and hard to locate. Seventeen of these mothers reported that they were either ignored by their caseworkers or, conversely, told not to get counseling until their case was adjudicated because of the investigator's belief that any exposure to therapy might erode the child's credibility as a witness. Only 48% of the families were informed of their Victim Rights as required by …

Reinforcement Of Compliance With Postitive And Negative Commands And Its Effect On Inappropriate Behavior In Children, Mary Jacobs Zielinski, Howard Levine, Daniel Houlihan Apr 1992

Reinforcement Of Compliance With Postitive And Negative Commands And Its Effect On Inappropriate Behavior In Children, Mary Jacobs Zielinski, Howard Levine, Daniel Houlihan

Psychology Department Publications

This study examined reinforcement of compliance with positive (''do'') and negative ("don't") commands, along with its effects on inappropriate behavior in children. The design of the study was A-B· A-C-B-C counterbalanced across two subjects. In both subjects, reinforcement of compliance to .. do" commands resulted in increased compliance to this type of command. Similarly, reinforcement of compliance with "don't" commands resulted in increased compliance to "don't" commands. In addition, a tendency for compliance with the reinforced type of command to generalize to the nonreinforced type was observed in some phases. Response covariation was.also observed in some phases. Response covariation was …

The Channelling Function In Family Law, Carl E. Schneider Apr 1992

The Channelling Function In Family Law, Carl E. Schneider

Articles

On an occasion such as this, we are called to step back from our daily work to seek what Justice Holmes called a "liberal view" of our subject. Today, I propose to do so by exploring a function of family law that I believe is basic, that underlies much of family law, that resonates with the deepest purposes of culture but that is rarely addressed expressly-namely, what I call the "channelling function." As I will soon explain at length, in the channelling function the law recruits, builds, shapes, sustains; and promotes social institutions. My exploration of this topic will have …

Direct And Indirect Testing Of Memory In Children With Learning Disabilities, Janette L. Sodoro Apr 1992

Direct And Indirect Testing Of Memory In Children With Learning Disabilities, Janette L. Sodoro

Student Work

This study examined the relation between performance on direct and indirect measures of memory for pictures and words in children with learning disabilities. Recognition memory provided the direct measure and the magnitude of naming facilitation provided the indirect measure. Fourth grade learning disabled and nonlearning disabled children were asked to study a mixed list of pictures and words. A naming/recognition task was administered immediately following the study phase, as well as the following day. In addition, source memory was measured immediately following each recognition decision. For each item recognized as "old", subjects were required to render a decision about the …

Minor Changes: Emancipating Children In Modem Times, Carol Sanger, Eleanor Willemsen Jan 1992

Minor Changes: Emancipating Children In Modem Times, Carol Sanger, Eleanor Willemsen

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article reports on the use of still another mechanism for removing children in conflict with their parents: statutory emancipation, the process by which minors attain legal adulthood before reaching the age of majority. Statutorily emancipated minors can sign binding contracts, own property, keep their earnings, and disobey their parents. Although under eighteen, they are "considered as being over the age of majority" in most of their dealings with parents and third parties. Thus, while emancipated minors can sign contracts and stay out late, their adult status also means that their parents are no longer responsible for the minors' support. …

Children And Their Art, Stacey Nicol Jan 1992

Children And Their Art, Stacey Nicol

Honors Capstones

Art is an important facet of children's development and can aid disturbed children in the form of therapy, if needed. It is necessary to consider the development of art in normal young children before the topic of art therapy can be broached. The importance of art and the different stages of art that children go through are touched upon in the following pages to provide necessary background information. The last section of this paper discusses the role of art therapy by defining art therapy and looking at how evaluations based on art should be made. The purpose of this paper …

Creating Informal Play Opportunities: Are Parents' And Preschoolers' Initiations Related To Children's Competence With Peers?, Gary W. Ladd, Craig H. Hart Jan 1992

Creating Informal Play Opportunities: Are Parents' And Preschoolers' Initiations Related To Children's Competence With Peers?, Gary W. Ladd, Craig H. Hart

Faculty Publications

Preschoolers' social competence may depend on the frequency with which informal play activities are initiated by parents', children, and playmates. In this study, measures ofchildren's peer relations in informal and school contexts and the frequency of parents', children's, and peers' play initiations were obtained with 83 preschool children and their families on 2 occasions. Frequent parent initiations were associated with higher levels of prosocial behavior, lower levels of nonsocial behavior and, among boys, greater peer acceptance in preschool. Children who were more initiating of informal peer contacts displayed less anxious behavior in school and were better liked by their classmates. …

The Probative Weight Of The "Mainstreaming" Requirement Under The Eha, Linda S. Abrahamson Nov 1991

The Probative Weight Of The "Mainstreaming" Requirement Under The Eha, Linda S. Abrahamson

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment examines the case law which has developed around the "mainstreaming" provision of the EHA. It focuses on the fact that placement decisions made by school districts are nearly always upheld, regardless of the desires of parents or handicapped students. The author contends that this inequity does not properly respect the role of parents under the EHA, as advocates for their handicapped children. The author concludes by developing a factor test to determine the appropriate placement for a handicapped student when the degree of mainstreaming is the only issue before a reviewing court.

Amusement Centres And Social Risk : A Survey Into The Social Risks That Amusement Centres Pose For Young People Who Use Them, Howard Sercombe

Research outputs pre 2011

This report summarises the indings of a survey amongst respondents connected with the amusement and leisure centre industry in the inner city area of Perth in April 1988.

The survey canvassed perception of the social composition of users of the amusement centres and the pattern of centre usage. It asked questions concerning a number of areas of social concern that are sometimes raised in connection with centres, and canvassed opinion regarding the need for regulation or licensing of centres.

Briefly, the survey found that:

There is no evidence to suggest that amusement centres are in any way connected with drug …

Parent Indicators Of Quality Care In Out Of School Hours Care In Western Australia, Vicki Banham, Allison Picton-King Jan 1991

Parent Indicators Of Quality Care In Out Of School Hours Care In Western Australia, Vicki Banham, Allison Picton-King

Research outputs pre 2011

An Investigation into the identification of indicators of quality care for outside school hours was undertaken.

Data was derived from a survey of 252 parents with children currently attending after school care in W.A., and compared with the indicators of quality developed by the Joint Review of the Commonwealth Department of Community Services and Commonwealth Public Service Board on Outside School Hours Care, Vacation Care and Adventure Playgrounds. Although parents identified specific indicators of quality care, the findings were consistent with those of the Review.

Comparing these findings with the extensive current research on pre-school care indicators of quality, suggested …
