Therapeutic Camps And Their Impact On The Family Of Children With Special Health Care Needs: A Mixed Method Study, Brandi Lindsey
Therapeutic Camps And Their Impact On The Family Of Children With Special Health Care Needs: A Mixed Method Study, Brandi Lindsey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Children with a chronic illness or disability can encounter many difficulties throughout their lifetimes. Respite care through therapeutic summer day camps is a service used to relieve the physical and mental strains placed on caregivers while also creating unique opportunities to benefit the child. There are gaps in the literature surrounding therapeutic camps and their benefit for the family and their ability to manage the child’s special health care need. The purpose of this study is to determine how respite care in the form of a therapeutic summer day camp for children with special needs impacts a family’s ability to …
Psychometric Properties Of The Arabic Version Of The Perceived Physical Ability Scale For Children In Oman, Sabry M. Abd-El-Fattah
Psychometric Properties Of The Arabic Version Of The Perceived Physical Ability Scale For Children In Oman, Sabry M. Abd-El-Fattah
Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies
This study aimed at examining the psychometric properties of the Perceived Physical Ability Scale for Children (PPASC) within an Omani context. A sample of 250 fourth graders (130 males and 120 females) from six public primary schools in four governorates in Oman responded to Arabic translated version of the PPASC. Data on students' in-class physical activity, social desirability, and teachers' nominations of students' physical ability were also collected. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the unidimensional model of the PPASC had adequate fit to the data. Multigroup CFA revealed gender invariance for PPASC unidimensional model when it was compared across male …
The Presentation Of Childhood Parental Divorce In Adulthood: A Retrospective Phenomenological Study, Sheala Catherine Morrison
The Presentation Of Childhood Parental Divorce In Adulthood: A Retrospective Phenomenological Study, Sheala Catherine Morrison
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
There has been a wealth of research aimed at developing an understanding of the way in which the experience of divorce impacts children. However, adult children of divorce have been widely underrepresented in this literature, much of which is outdated being at least ten years old. With shifting societal attitudes and the transformation of the family system since the 1990's it is crucial that the research is updated in order to stay up on the way children and families are impacted in today's society. The purpose of this study was to hear directly from adults who experienced their parents' divorce …
A Suryey Of Music Therapists' Use Of Music To Facilitate Reading Development In Children, Cynthia Cross
A Suryey Of Music Therapists' Use Of Music To Facilitate Reading Development In Children, Cynthia Cross
Masters Theses
This study utilized Naturalistic Inquiry methods to investigate how music therapists use music elements to impact reading development in school-aged children. Eleven Board-Certified Music Therapists were interviewed providing information regarding music therapy interventions, reading skills targeted, theoretical influences, and professional influences. Transcripts of interviews were analyzedto determine themes, coÍtmon use of language related to the subject, common perceptions, and techniques and uses for music to impact reading development. In general subjects did not report specifically using music elements to target reading behavior. Rather, most subjects identified reading objectives determined by classroom teachers and developed music interventions to accommodate those objectives. …
Psychological And Genetic Contributions To The Development Of Social Cognition In Children, Jacqueline Marie Klaver
Psychological And Genetic Contributions To The Development Of Social Cognition In Children, Jacqueline Marie Klaver
Dissertations
This study examined the development of social cognition in children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as the influence of behavioral and molecular genetics on these higher-order cognitive abilities. Specifically, it was hypothesized that children with ASD would perform more poorly on all social cognitive tasks compared with typically developing peers. In addition, it was hypothesized that typically developing children who performed better on a simpler social cognitive task at ages 3 or 4 would perform better at follow-up (i.e., one time between the ages of 6-10). Lastly, it was hypothesized that children who had at least …

Longer Gestation Among Children Born Full Term Influences Cognitive And Motor Development, Emma V. Espel, Laura M. Glynn, Curt A. Sandman, Elyssia Poggi Davis
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Children born preterm show persisting impairments in cognitive functioning, school achievement, and brain development. Most research has focused on implications of birth prior to 37 gestational weeks; however, the fetal central nervous system continues to make fundamental changes throughout gestation. Longer gestation is associated with reduced morbidity and mortality even among infants born during the period clinically defined as full term (37–41 gestational weeks). The implications of shortened gestation among term infants for neurodevelopment are poorly understood. The present study prospectively evaluates 232 mothers and their full term infants (50.4% male infants) at three time points across the first postnatal …

Factors Associated With Physical Activity In Kindergarten Children, Carol L. Hammonds, Janet C. Meininger
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Sunday, July 27, 2014:
Purpose: Reversing obesity is an urgent public health need for children: worldwide, in 2011 more than 40 million children under the age of five were overweight 1. Increasing intensity and duration of physical activity (PA) is a strategy to aid in preventing and reducing obesity. According to limited available research, PA in kindergarten children is decreasing below recommended guidelines and sedentary behavior is increasing 2; the potential to change the obesity trajectory, however, is greater in early childhood when healthy behaviors are 'imprinted' and entrenched 3. More than 11,207,000 children in the United …

The goals of this study were to add to the current literature regarding the health needs of victims of domestic minor sex trafficking and to add a qualitative aspect to the evaluation of the Citrus Helping Adolescents Negatively Impacted by Commercial Exploitation (CHANCE) program. Disposable cameras were distributed to a group of adolescent girls enrolled in the program who were then tasked with taking pictures of things that made them feel …
Miller V. Alabama: Something Unconsitutional Now Was Equally Unconstitutional Then, W. Patrick Conlon
Miller V. Alabama: Something Unconsitutional Now Was Equally Unconstitutional Then, W. Patrick Conlon
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform Caveat
In June 2012, the United States Supreme Court found mandatory life-without-parole sentences against juvenile offenders unconstitutional in Miller v. Alabama. The Court determined that because children possess “immaturity, impetuosity, and [fail] to appreciate risks and consequences,” they are fundamentally different than adults. Although Miller invalidated every juvenile mandatory life-without-parole (JMLWOP) statute across the United States, there is no clear indication regarding whether Miller retroactively applies to juveniles sentenced to mandatory life-without-parole before the Court’s ruling. As a result, states are split on whether to apply Miller retroactively. Fifteen states have yet to decide whether Miller applies retroactively, while several other …
Underprivileged Children In Port-Au-Prince, Haiti: Hearing And Academic Performance Of Children In Public Schools In Port Au Prince, Talia Meisel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Hearing loss is estimated to affect more than 360 million people worldwide, 32% of whom are children. Children with hearing loss tend to develop compromised communicative abilities and also have been found to perform more poorly academically than their normal hearing peers. Because of the lack of medical care, children in third world countries are expected to have more difficulty hearing and learning in a classroom setting than children in first world countries due to higher incidences of conductive pathology. The purpose of this study is to assess the hearing ability of underprivileged children in kindergarten and primary schools in …
The Effects Of Endogamous Marriage On Family Outcomes: Evidence From Exogenous Variation In Immigrant Flows During 1900-1930 In The United States, Ho Po Crystal Wong
The Effects Of Endogamous Marriage On Family Outcomes: Evidence From Exogenous Variation In Immigrant Flows During 1900-1930 In The United States, Ho Po Crystal Wong
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Positive assortative matching in terms of traits like ethnicity, race and personality has been prevalent in marital formation. One possible explanation for this is that husbands and wives in endogamous marriages have complementary skills and tastes that increase marital surplus. This paper aims to estimate the effects of ethnic assortative matching on a variety of household outcomes by using the exogenous variation in immigrant flows in the United States during the period 1900-1930 to disentangle the selection effect of partners. The major finding is that the complementarities in home production from same ethnic marriage enhances investment in household public goods …
Reading Performance Is Predicted By More Than Phonological Processing, Michelle Y. Kibby, Sylvia E. Lee, Sarah M. Dyer
Reading Performance Is Predicted By More Than Phonological Processing, Michelle Y. Kibby, Sylvia E. Lee, Sarah M. Dyer
Publications
We compared three phonological processing components (phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming and phonological memory), verbal working memory, and attention control in terms of how well they predict the various aspects of reading: word recognition, pseudoword decoding, fluency and comprehension, in a mixed sample of 182 children ages 8–12 years. Participants displayed a wide range of reading ability and attention control. Multiple regression was used to determine how well the phonological processing components, verbal working memory, and attention control predict reading performance. All equations were highly significant. Phonological memory predicted word identification and decoding. In addition, phonological awareness and rapid automatized …

Children's Self-Representations, Cultural Developmental Goals, And Social Behavior In Mexican And Euro-American Children, Mary Bancroft
Psychology ETDs
The current study investigated the development of cultural self-concepts in children and relationships between self-concept, social behavior and maternal parenting and cultural values. Preschool and kindergarten Mexican and Euro-American children (N =56) participated. Children described themselves in response to open-ended questions, mothers completed self-report measures and teachers completed questionnaires regarding childrens social behavior with peers and authority figures. Overall, significant differences were found in children's self-descriptions between the two groups. Mexican children's self-descriptions were balanced between private, relational, and descriptions of significant others whereas Euro-American children's self-descriptions were dominated by private descriptors such as personal attributes, preferences and possessions. Contrary …

Plyler Children: 21st Century Challenges With Judicial-Policy Implementation Affecting Immigrant Children In New Jersey, Christine T. Brenner, Kirk A. Leach, David Tulloch
Plyler Children: 21st Century Challenges With Judicial-Policy Implementation Affecting Immigrant Children In New Jersey, Christine T. Brenner, Kirk A. Leach, David Tulloch
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
Denying unauthorized immigrant children access to a free public education through incomplete judicial policy implementation may lead to an illiterate underclass. Communicating, implementing, and enforcing Plyler v. Doe school registration documentation requirements continue to be difficult at the district level. In 2008, an ACLU study in New Jersey found that 187 of 516 school districts were mandating inappropriate documentation from parents registering their children. Separation of powers requires that executive agencies proactively implement transformative judicial decisions.
Arguing On The Side Of Culture, Debra Chopp, Robert Ortega, Frank E. Vandervort
Arguing On The Side Of Culture, Debra Chopp, Robert Ortega, Frank E. Vandervort
Articles
Human service professions are increasingly acknowledging the ubiquitous role of culture in the human experience. This is evidenced in professional codes of ethics, professional school accreditation standards, licensing, and in some cases through state statutes regarding professional codes of conduct. Across professions, concerted efforts are being made to infuse standards of culturally responsive practice into curricular content and training. For example, instruction on cultural competence is expected in business and medical education.1 Psychology and social work both require their professionals to exercise cultural competence. When it comes to cultural competence/ though, the legal codes of ethics and professional practice are …
Effect Of Reading And Discussing A Storybook About Alzheimer's Disease On Children And Parents, Erin Sakai
Effect Of Reading And Discussing A Storybook About Alzheimer's Disease On Children And Parents, Erin Sakai
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Currently, there are 5.2 million Americans over the age of 65 with Alzheimer's disease (AD; Alzheimer's Association, 2013). Given the growing proportion of the population that is over age 65, the number of people who will develop Alzheimer's disease is expected to increase significantly over the next 20 years. One consequence of that trend is that more young children (i.e., ages 4-12) are likely to encounter AD through a grandparent or great-grandparent with the disease. While it is unknown exactly how many young children have grandparents or great-grandparents with the disease, 30 percent of dementia caregivers also have children under …

Using The R-Pas' Aggressive Content Score For The Evaluation Of Aggressive Behaviors In Children, Rebecca Dehass
Using The R-Pas' Aggressive Content Score For The Evaluation Of Aggressive Behaviors In Children, Rebecca Dehass
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
The Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS) was developed in 2011 as an alternative to the previous Comprehensive System. The goal was to improve the psychometrics, and particularly the validity, of this assessment method. The norms for children were questionable in the Comprehensive system (e.g., outdated, low numbers of subjects) and validity studies for children were sparse. One of the indicators included in the R-PAS system, the aggressive content indicator (AgC), is intended to reflect aggressive behavior, but few studies have examined the validity of this indicator. This study examined the validity of AgC in a sample of 32 children and …
The Effects Of Divorce And Its Associated Stressors On Children And Adolescents, Aaron Brownlee
The Effects Of Divorce And Its Associated Stressors On Children And Adolescents, Aaron Brownlee
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Four factors were looked at to determine how children of divorce are affected by their parents divorce. The Family Environment Scale (FES) assessed family environment, Social Support Scale for children (SSSC) assessed social support, and the Life Events Checklist (LEC) assessed appraisal of the stressors shown to co-occur with divorce. The Behavioral Assessment Scale for Children, second edition (BASC-2; parent and self-reports) measured the criterion of this study, behavioral and emotional functioning. The sample consisted of 91 children and their parents from the Mankato area public schools. Hierarchical multiple regressions indicated a main effect of the appraisal of co-occurring stressors …
Antenatal Anxiety Predicting Child Outcomes In Fragile X Syndrome, Ashley Nicole Robinson
Antenatal Anxiety Predicting Child Outcomes In Fragile X Syndrome, Ashley Nicole Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
A relationship between maternal anxiety during pregnancy, known as antenatal anxiety, and negative child outcomes has been consistently shown in the literature. Children of mothers who experienced antenatal anxiety have higher rates of physical, behavioral, cognitive, and emotional deficits compared to children whose mothers did not experience clinical levels of anxiety during pregnancy. To date, research on antenatal anxiety and child outcomes is almost exclusively limited to non-clinical populations. Therefore, little is known about the relationship between maternal anxiety during pregnancy and suboptimal cognitive and behavioral development in children with disabilities. Families with fragile X syndrome (FXS) are a unique …
Isaac Watts And The Culture Of Dissent, Andrew Eli M. Yeater
Isaac Watts And The Culture Of Dissent, Andrew Eli M. Yeater
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Although Isaac Watts wrote hymns in the early eighteenth century, some of his hymns, such as “Joy to the World,” “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed?,” and “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” survive today as well-known hymns. However, little has been written about the rhetorical effects of his hymns. This thesis demonstrates that, like any other literary work, Watts’ hymns can be analyzed rhetorically. This thesis analyzes Watts’ hymns with the aid of Louis Montrose’s New Historicism, showing how Watts’ hymns were impacted by the English culture in which he lived and how they impacted the religious culture to …
