Background: Despite the many existing implementation methods, theories, and frameworks, implementation science is insufficiently closing the research-to-practice gap. Bridging this gap is critical to achieving healthy and thriving communities globally, and requires implementation processes that promote equity and reach diverse populations, especially those most in need. The aim of this scoping review was to identify, thematically analyse, categorise, and provide examples of implementation processes described in equity-focused literature, with a focus on health and social care interventions for children and adolescents from birth to 18 years of age.
Methods: A comprehensive search of literature was undertaken across six electronic databases …

Grief Journeys: A Literature Review On Integrating Expressive Arts And Play In Grief Therapy, Joanna Marcus
Expressive Therapies Theses
This literature review explores the use of expressive arts therapy and play therapy in therapeutic spaces for grieving children. The author seeks to investigate how elements of expressive arts therapy and play therapy might be integrated to offer more effective support. Research was conducted using search engines to gather literature about historical and contemporary bereavement theories, play therapy, and expressive arts therapy, with a focus on children’s experiences. Two primary insights gleaned from this review are that the cognitive understanding of death is multifaceted and changes as children mature, and that children grieve in ways unique to their developmental stages. …

Mass Incarceration And The Psychological And Social Impacts On Black And Latino Families, Ofelia Godina, Tamara Winegardner, Erika Cabrera
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Mass incarceration will have profound and disproportionate effects on Black and Latino families in the United States, extending beyond the incarcerated individual to impact family functioning, emotional well-being, and access to support systems. Rooted in structural racism and inequitable criminal justice policies, mass incarceration will contribute to long-standing social and economic disparities that will continue to shape the lived experiences of marginalized communities. This study will explore the psychological and social impacts of incarceration on Black and Latino families, with particular attention to emotional distress, family relationships, stigma, and resilience. Using a qualitative research design, the study will employ semi-structured …

Examining Immigration Detention Centers And Its Effect On The Well-Being Of Immigrant Families, Jennifer Sullinger-Lock, Luisa Arias, Saira Murillo, Helen Iniguez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Immigration detention centers in the United States have become a contentious issue, particularly regarding their impact on the well-being of immigrant families. These facilities are often operated by government agencies and private entities, and function under conditions that compromise basic human rights. The purpose of this study is to assess the psychological, emotional, and physical effects of detention centers on immigrant children and families. This research utilizes a quantitative cross-sectional design, employing a self-report questionnaire among two groups: immigrants who have experienced detention and immigrants who have not, with the independent variable being immigration detention centers and the dependent variable …

Gaps In Therapeutic Services For Foster Youth In Short Term Residential Therapeutic Programs, Kaniqua Tainiaja Stewart, Maria Del Rosario Sanchez, Rachelle Hernandez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study examines rehabilitation outcomes among foster youth who are currently or were previously placed in Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs (STRTPs), also known as group homes. With more than 400,000 children are in foster care in the United States, and approximately 39,000–57,000 residing in group homes, limited research has explored why rehabilitation efforts in these settings often fall short. Existing literature emphasizes policy reforms, compliance, and placement outcomes under California’s Continuum of Care Reform, but gives less attention to youths lived therapeutic experiences and the consistency and quality of mental health services delivered within STRTPs. This study addresses this gap …

Humanitarian Task Force
Sexual violence against children (SVAC) is an acknowledged concern in humanitarian contexts. In response to recent findings on the prevalence of SVAC in refugee camps in Ethiopia, coupled with low levels of disclosure and service-seeking by child/adolescent survivors, the Baobab Research Programme Consortium collaborated with humanitarian stakeholders in Ethiopia to establish mechanisms for promoting sexual violence disclosure and service uptake among young survivors in refugee settings.
This study employed a mixed-methods concurrent triangulation study design (involving a combination of service statistics, group interviews, and fieldnotes) for evaluating the feasibility of the aforementioned intervention, which specifically entailed sexual violence screening (of …

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Children in Minnesota deserve safe, stable, and nurturing homes to grow, learn, and thrive. When family violence goes unaddressed, it harms not only individual children but also schools, communities, and the state’s long-term social and economic well-being. Protecting children reflects shared values of safety, dignity, equity, and collective responsibility. Investing in prevention and early intervention affirms Minnesota’s commitment to justice, strong families, and healthy futures for all children.

Background: Children with abdominal pain-related disorders of gut-brain interaction (AP-DGBI) often experience sleep disturbances which may be linked to the autonomic nervous system. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive measure of autonomic nervous system activity. Our aim was to examine if HRV was associated with characteristics of disturbed sleep in children with AP-DGBI in order to elucidate the underlying physiological mechanisms of disturbed sleep.
Methods: This analysis used baseline data from a randomized control trial of 156 children ages 7-12 years with AP-DGBI. HRV was measured after dinner using a Polar monitor. Sleep disturbances were evaluated using the Children's …
Archives And Children's Knowledge, Elliott Kuecker, Ashley Rockenbach
Archives And Children's Knowledge, Elliott Kuecker, Ashley Rockenbach
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This article argues for the importance of collecting works created by children—not just about and not just for—in formal archival collections. Framed through the ideas of legitimate knowledge and epistemic injustice, this piece combines notions important to children’s rights activists and childhood studies scholars with the role archives can play in preserving children’s knowledge through child-created materials. The authors describe how researchers struggle to find work created by children within archives, impacting the ability to create child-centered research that centers children’s views of the world as prominently as adult views of the world. Some collections that do include child-created materials …

Feeding Missoula: Food Insecurity In Rural Children And Youth, Chani Brammer, Braelee Cheeks, Jordin Holland, Rayne Mccollough, Laurel Palmer, Therese Solomon
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
In Montana, approximately one in seven children live in a food-insecure household, with rural Montanans in particular facing significant barriers. Existing needs-based food assistance programs, such as SNAP and WIC, have structural weaknesses: SNAP benefits are often not sufficient to last through the month, and those eligible for these programs face a confusing application process, shame and stigma, and logistical hurdles, such as limited transportation.
“Feeding Missoula” began with an evaluation of how current food assistance programs met or failed to meet the needs of rural youth. Our methodology integrated a comprehensive review of existing literature and structured interviews with …

Empowering Parenting & Bonding For Women With Young Children In A Transition Home, Payge Side, Mary Jan Greer Phd, Otr
Fall 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
This capstone project was completed at Star of Hope, a transitional housing facility for women and children. A needs assessment revealed that mothers struggled with routine consistency, emotional regulation, and parent–child bonding due to environmental demands. In response, a customized parenting guidebook was developed using occupational therapy principles to provide structure, bonding activities, and self-reflection strategies. Mothers who engaged with the guidebook reported improvements in organization, confidence, and interactions with their children. Sustainability was supported by leaving the guidebook with the facility and training staff for continued use. The project highlights the impact of simple, structured OT interventions in …

Children with IDDs are among the highest users of emergency health care services in their age group (3), with complex and challenging ED experiences. Digital knowledge translation (KT) tools can effectively share experiences and health information while addressing the learning needs of parents.
The aim of this study is to report on the …
Helping Families Learn About Social Emotional Learning, Madalyn Ross
Helping Families Learn About Social Emotional Learning, Madalyn Ross
Masters Projects
Having developmentally appropriate social-emotional skills is an essential component of a growing child, yet many children lack the social-emotional skills necessary to be successful in the classroom. Families play an important role in the development of a child, but research shows that there are significant gaps in the knowledge and use of social-emotional learning (SEL) that families have. This project explores the importance of family involvement and knowledge surrounding SEL by looking at certain aspects that hinder SEL growth, such as trauma and excessive screen time, and aspects that help children excel in SEL development, such as teacher education and …
Taking On A New Roll: Community-Based Therapeutic Tabletop Role-Playing With Elementary Schoolers, Danny Reinan
Taking On A New Roll: Community-Based Therapeutic Tabletop Role-Playing With Elementary Schoolers, Danny Reinan
Expressive Therapies Theses
Tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) such as Dungeons & Dragons are beginning to emerge as group therapeutic interventions, with a growing number of studies exploring their application. Early forays into this topic suggest a potential for TTRPGs to encourage prosocial behavior and collaboration in clients, as well as to explore heavy topics such as death from a more approachable distance. TTRPGs and the drama therapy core processes share many concepts, such as characters as projective objects, benevolent transgressive play, and aesthetic distance. Yet, research into TTRPGs from a drama therapy perspective is highly limited at this point. This capstone thesis highlights …

Introduction: COVID-19 restrictions altered the structure of the school and workday for families with children and led to changes in active transportation. Continued restrictions impacted access to many community locations and led to changes in physical activity (PA) behavior.
Purpose: The objectives of the study were to describe the changes in the 1) amount of PA time per day, 2) frequency of PA, and 3) sitting time. Information about how PA changed for parents and children during the COVID-19 pandemic will have potential implications for education, public health, and recreation management.
Methods: This cross-sectional study enlisted participants via an online …
Poverty In Ethnic Minority Children: Social Workers/Social Work Students’ Perceptions Of Effective Interventions, Danielle Nicole Davis
Poverty In Ethnic Minority Children: Social Workers/Social Work Students’ Perceptions Of Effective Interventions, Danielle Nicole Davis
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Racial and ethnic minorities experience poverty at rates significantly higher than the rest of the United States population, especially when considering children. This disparity leads to decreased positive outcomes for children growing up in impoverished ethnic minority households. By examining the interventions utilized to address childhood poverty and how social workers and social work students create targeted interventions for this population, the current study provides insight into effective methods for addressing childhood poverty in ethnic minority populations. The current research expands on information gathered regarding effective interventions for minority children in poverty. This is an exploratory study that used a …

Social Determinants Of Health Screening In The Pediatric Population: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Staff Education, Brenda Awuah, Kansas S. Logan, Sally Humphrey Dnp, Aprn, Cpnp-Pc, Sharon Little Dnp, Aprn, Fnp-Bc
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) are conditions that influence health outcomes. SDOHs are screened and addressed in many clinics and hospitals to reduce patients' social needs. Research indicates how unaddressed SDOH can negatively impact chronic illness, along with the daily life of pediatric patients. SDOH's role in pediatric patients includes food security, housing stability, access to healthcare, caregiver education, and parental mental health. Previous research has addressed these factors; however, the lack of staff education prevents effective compliance and follow-up on SDOH screening. Challenges remain in implementing and integrating SDOH into routine well-child visits. This scoping review will evaluate and …

Investing In Minnesota Families: Strengthening Support For Kinship Caregivers, Karla Fahey, Laura Gebur, Jadyn Nelson-Spies, Kenzie Schuch
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Kinship caregivers are falling through the cracks, lacking ongoing support and safety services for children and their caregivers. Kinship diversion caregivers and their children do not receive services and support that licensed foster caregivers might receive such as financial assistance, reunification efforts, and safety monitoring. Pursuing kinship in policy and practice needs to be a priority to keep families together, allowing children to feel a sense of belonging and identity, preserving cultures and traditions, and promoting equity among families. While efforts have been made in many states to increase support for kinship caregivers and reduce the barriers to licensing within …

A Review Of The Ripple Effect Of Parental Incarceration: Suggestions For System Improvement From Neonatal Development Through Adolescence, Karen Thew, April Terry
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Parental incarceration has the potential to drastically affect the social, behavioral, and physical lives of children. Such negative impacts include prenatal and chronic health conditions, behavioral and mental health issues, developmental delays, juvenile and criminal legal system involvement, and overall declines in well-being. These damaging outcomes occur for babies delivered during their mothers’ incarceration with negative lingering effects seen throughout the lifespan. Due to the stigmatization of incarceration, these children may experience bullying, engage in isolating behaviors, and struggle within the school, which may lead to the school-to-prison pipeline. While prevention and intervention services directed at these youth could not …

Children Involvement In Terrorism Activities: Perpetrator Or A Victim? (A Study In The Circle Of Violence), Wawan Edi Prastiyo, I Ketut Rai Setiabudhi
Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
Terrorism is an extraordinary crime since it violates human rights. However, it will be different if children commit it. The legal approach is not necessarily taken against children who become terrorists. The problem of children's involvement in terrorist activities does not end there. Another important issue that must also be considered is children of terrorist parents. They must be rescued from a violent social environment. In this study, we will discuss the position of children as victims in the cycle of violence of terrorism and criminal policies in overcoming the involvement of children in terrorism activities. This research is normative …

National Training Manual For Para Social Workers, Ministry Of Gender Labour And Social Development, Republic Of Uganda
Humanitarian Task Force
Para social workers have become an integral part of Uganda’s social support system. Operating at the grassroots level, often in remote and underserved communities, these individuals provide critical services to vulnerable children, youth, families, and communities in need of support. In the face of limited professional human resources in the social welfare sector, Para Social Workers fill a vital gap, extending the reach of formal systems and ensuring that no one is left behind. This revised edition of the manual reflects the evolving nature of community and social work practice in Uganda. It incorporates new practical tools, and evidence-based approaches …
