The Importance And New Interpretation Of Physical Education In The Elementary School Setting: Health And Wellness Education, Kimberly Ackley
The Importance And New Interpretation Of Physical Education In The Elementary School Setting: Health And Wellness Education, Kimberly Ackley
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Despite substantial evidence of the countless cognitive and physical benefits physical education in elementary school classrooms provides, some schools in the United States do not offer an adequate combination of both physical activity and education about nutrition, health, and wellbeing. To fully encapsulate the subject of Health and Wellness Education (HWE), students must not only be engaged physically outside of the classroom, but they must also be engaged holistically with an equal emphasis on mind, body, and spirit inside the classroom. This student engagement would include daily lessons regarding mental wellbeing, a consistent and reserved period for physical activity, and …

Medical Education Dissertations
Introduction: The prevalence of childhood obesity is reported to be increasing rapidly in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Excess adiposity is a key independent risk factor for the future development of cardiometabolic disorders such as metabolic syndrome. Population-based studies using representative samples are required to provide accurate and valid estimates of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Currently, there is a dearth of pediatric obesity research conducted in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
Aims: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and factors associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome among school children in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE.

Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (EED), a syndrome characterized by chronic gut inflammation, contributes towards stunting and poor response to enteric vaccines in children in developing countries. In this study, we evaluated major putative biomarkers of EED using growth faltering as its clinical proxy. Newborns (n = 380) were enrolled and followed till 18 months with monthly anthropometry. Biomarkersassociated with gut and systemic inflammation were assessed at 6 and 9 months. Linear mixed effects model was used to determine the associations of these biomarkers with growth faltering between birth and 18 months. Fecal myeloperoxidase (neutrophil activation marker) at 6 months [β = …

Preparedness To Identify And Care For Trafficked Persons In South Carolina Hospitals: A State-Wide Exploration, Stephanie C. Armstrong
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Human trafficking is a growing crime impacting many victims from vulnerable populations. Due to the trauma and abuse endured, most victims are seen by a healthcare professional while still being trafficked. The majority of healthcare professionals and hospitals are not prepared to identify and care for trafficking victims, resulting in sub- optimal care and missed opportunities for intervention and assistance. The prepare section of the Common Ground Preparedness Framework was utilized to underpin this research; three separate studies were completed to gain empirical data related to preparedness. The first study examined screening instruments to identify commercially sexually exploited children and …

Design, Implementation And Evaluation Of The Impact Of A Body Image Professional Development Program For Early Childhood Educators, Karen Lombardi
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Poor body image is a serious public health concern globally, and may lead to the development of poor mental and physical health, as well as eating disorders. Body image concerns were once believed to arise during puberty, though it is now reported children as young as three years of age present with such problems. Early intervention is therefore an important strategy to improve mental and physical health outcomes for very young children, and educators are an obvious conduit to build confidence, self-esteem and resilience of such children. In order for them to adequately fulfil this role, educators must first understand …

Understanding Feeding Style And Young Children's Consumption Of Food, Mary W. Bean
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Due to increased rates of childhood obesity since 2010, researchers have examined family environmental factors and family influences on children's consumption of healthy foods. While previous research has examined how factors such as food presentation and the food intake of other family members can predict a child's body mass index, there has been little research examining whether parent factors predict the amount of healthy foods children eat. This quantitative survey study examined whether certain parent factors, specifically parents' attitudes about food, parents' feeding styles, and parents' attachment styles, predicted the amount of fruits and vegetables children ate. Understanding the extent …
An Examination Of Primary Care Providers’ Assessment And Plan Of Care For Children And Adolescents Who Are Overweight Or Obese, Kevin Pinto
DNP Projects
Background: Childhood and adolescent obesity rates have more than tripled since the 1970s. Currently in the United States, one in five children is obese (6-19 years of age). It is important to identify children and adolescents who are overweight or obese because early intervention may help to reduce the long-term implications of obesity. The purpose of this project was to examine how often pediatric primary care providers diagnosed overweight or obesity and created a plan of care for children 6-17 years of age who were overweight or obese. Facilitators and barriers to diagnosing and creating a plan of care were …
