Participation And The Focus Of Nutrition Education In A Rural Child Growth Monitoring Program In Kenya, Elizabeth N. Kuria

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Nutrition education is one of the strategies that addresses high levels of malnutrition in the world. Since independence in 1963. Kenya has instituted socio-economic, food security, nutrition and health policies to improve the nutrition and quality of life of it's people. In spite of these policies, one third of the Kenyan population is undernourished. This study was planned to establish how nutrition education is conducted in the Ministry of Health Thika District through a rural child growth monitoring program and to generate and reflect on women's participation in decision making in the program. Open-ended interviews were conducted with 21 women …

Ailing Hearts, Go Home: Ethnographic Storytelling And The Levels Of Experience, Bryan D. Tilt

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

I visited Primary Children's Medical Center on a fresh snow morning near the beginning of last winter. The hospital was not where it had been in my childhood, a quiet neighborhood in "the avenues" section of Salt Lake City; several years ago the hospital moved to a new location farther east on the Wasatch Mountain foothills, near the University of Utah Medical Center. The old brick building now sits sedate and empty at the top of a shaded hill. My memory of the old hospital is as a bright and oppressive place, full of the stuff of life and death. …

Making Interdisciplinary Connections To Your School Gardening Program, Marcia Eames-Sheavly Feb 1998

Making Interdisciplinary Connections To Your School Gardening Program, Marcia Eames-Sheavly

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Gardening is an exciting, approachable way to teach kids about plants. A good gardening program doesn't need to be one more thing thrown on your plate; by integrating it into the curriculum, gardening can be easy and interdisciplinary. Interdisciplinary projects enhance young peoples' ability to make connections among isolated facts, and to find meaning among those arbitrary facts. A U.S. News and World Report article (January 1993) pointed out that some interdisciplinary pilot projects in New York and Los Angeles schools even improved school attendance, and decreased drop-out rates.

G98-1364 Feeding Children Ages 2 To 5, H. Darlene Martin Jan 1998

G98-1364 Feeding Children Ages 2 To 5, H. Darlene Martin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide defines nutritional needs and healthy eating patterns for children ages 2 to 5.

Children Grow at Their Own Rate

Children move though growth spurts throughout childhood. Usually, a child will grow about 2 1/2 inches and gain about four or five pounds each year between the ages of 2 and 5. By 15 months old, most children have developed enough fine motor skills to feed themselves without help, if allowed to do so. Appetites vary with young children as well as adults. Parents and caregivers need to help promote a healthy pattern of eating rather than using controlling …

Ethnicity And Child Mortality In Sub-Saharan Africa, Martin Brockerhoff, Paul C. Hewett Jan 1998

Ethnicity And Child Mortality In Sub-Saharan Africa, Martin Brockerhoff, Paul C. Hewett

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Analysis of recent survey data reveals large differentials in child mortality among ethnic groups in countries throughout sub-Saharan Africa. These disparities correspond with the prominence of specific ethnic groups in the national political economy. In many countries where heads of state since independence have come from one or two ethnic groups-as in Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, and Niger-these groups have experienced levels of early child mortality at least one-third lower than those of other groups. In other countries where there have been several transitions in state control, as in Ghana and Uganda, descendants of precolonial kingdoms such as Ashanti and Buganda …

La Familia En La Mira: Nuevas Perspectivas Sobre Madres, Padres E Hijos, Judith Bruce, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Ann Leonard, Patrice L. Engle, Niev Duffy Jan 1998

La Familia En La Mira: Nuevas Perspectivas Sobre Madres, Padres E Hijos, Judith Bruce, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Ann Leonard, Patrice L. Engle, Niev Duffy

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Country Profile Of Women's Health And Development In Indonesia, Population Council Jan 1998

Country Profile Of Women's Health And Development In Indonesia, Population Council

Reproductive Health

The “Country Profile of Women’s Health and Development in Indonesia” contains a thorough review of the following: Geographical, Political, Socio-Demographic, and Economic Profile of Indonesia; Status of Women; and Women’s Health Status. In view of the complexity of the problems facing women, the document concludes that Indonesia needs a plan for the future with a gender perspective that prioritizes increased life expectancy, legal protection, and empowerment for women. To reach this goal, Indonesia started by ratifying the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and set it into law in 1984. This convention, together with …

Children's Rights And Family Autonomy In The South African Context: A Comment On Children's Rights Under The Final Constitution, Tshepo L. Mosikatsana Jan 1998

Children's Rights And Family Autonomy In The South African Context: A Comment On Children's Rights Under The Final Constitution, Tshepo L. Mosikatsana

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Article investigates the nature and extent of the protection granted to children's rights in the South African Constitution. It concludes that the child-centered approach of the Constitution entitles children, as independent actors, to certain fundamental rights. Acknowledging both the parent-centered nature of the existing South African legal framework and the entrenched support for practices, many rooted in indigenous law and tradition, that contribute to the oppression of children, the author argues that the constitutionalization of these rights will contribute to the betterment of children in South Africa, proving to be more than mere moral exhortation. Under apartheid in South …

CBN Occasional Papers

Attempts is made in this paper to situate Nigeria's educational system within the context of her overall economic development in view of the universal acceptance of the ultimate importance of human resources in determining the level and manner of economic progress. The various ways in which education contributes to the process of economic development are explored. A statistical review and appraisal of the Nigerian Educational system show that given its current level, the system is under-developed as reflected by an overall adult literacy ratio of 49.5% and primary school enrollment level of 63.5% of the primary school-age cohort as at …

Differences In Married Versus Maritally Disrupted Children's Frequency Of Contact With Their Mothers, Sonya Dee Thompson Oct 1997

Differences In Married Versus Maritally Disrupted Children's Frequency Of Contact With Their Mothers, Sonya Dee Thompson

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the effects of children's marital status on the frequency of contact they have with their mothers. As American society ages and marital disruption remains high, it is important to determine if there are differences in the relationships adult children have with their aging parents. A secondary analysis was conducted on data collected in 1986 for the General Social Survey. Two hypotheses were created from theory:

(1) From dependency and obligation theories, it was predicted that maritally disrupted adult children would report having greater contact with their mothers than married adult children.

(2) From status and resource adjustment …

The Effect Of Growth Hormone Release On Plasma And Erythrocyte Selenium And Zinc Levels In Children, Maria Estela Legal De Reid Jul 1997

The Effect Of Growth Hormone Release On Plasma And Erythrocyte Selenium And Zinc Levels In Children, Maria Estela Legal De Reid

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Research studies have suggested that selenium may be important in the release of growth hormone, GH. A selenium-containing amino-acid residue, selenocysteine, has been identified as part of the active site of the three isoenzymes (Type I, II and III iodothyronine 5' -deiodinase) responsible for the synthesis of active thyroid hormone, T3, which is reported to stimulate GH secretion. The importance of zinc in growth is well- documented because of its involvement in transcription and expression of GH and its intermediary, insulin growth factor I or IGF- I. Thus, selenium and zinc levels in plasma may be altered in response …

Kids Count Alaska 1996, Norman Dinges, Claudia Lampman, Fay Reilly, Genee Jackson, Jack Kruse, Rosyland Frazier, Eric Larson, Mera Atlis, Alexandra Hill, Barbara Minton, Monette Dalsfoist Apr 1996

Kids Count Alaska 1996, Norman Dinges, Claudia Lampman, Fay Reilly, Genee Jackson, Jack Kruse, Rosyland Frazier, Eric Larson, Mera Atlis, Alexandra Hill, Barbara Minton, Monette Dalsfoist

ISER Reports

Between 1990 and 1995 the total population of Alaska increased about 12 percent, growing from 550,043 to 615,900. However, the number of children (18 and under) only grew about 9 percent, from 179,939 to 196,037. So the share of children in the population dropped slightly in the first half of the 1990s, from 32.7 percent to 31.8 percent. It was slower growth in the number of White children that caused the decline; numbers of children in other ethnic groups increased faster than the general population between 1990 and 1995.

A Hands-On Nutritional Curriculum For Children Ages Five To Eleven, Teryl L. Fricke Jan 1996

A Hands-On Nutritional Curriculum For Children Ages Five To Eleven, Teryl L. Fricke

Theses

This thesis will focus on the development of a nutrition curriculum to be used as a continuing education program at the community college level for children from the ages of five to eleven years.

Research indicates that American children are becoming physically unfit and overweight at an alarming rate . Because this condition seems to be the rule rather than the exception, it becomes important to the future health of our children that they be educated in proper selection of foods and eating habits.

Research also indicates that the health curriculums of local public school districts touch on the nutritional …

Report Of The Working Group On Determining The Child's Capacity To Make Decisions, Peter Margulies Jan 1996

Report Of The Working Group On Determining The Child's Capacity To Make Decisions, Peter Margulies

Fordham Law Review

[Preamble] As with adults, a lawyer has an ethical obligation to advocate the position of a child unless independent evidence exists that the child is unable to express a reasoned choice about issues that are relevant to the particular purpose for which the lawyer is representing the child. Where such evidence exists, the lawyer must engage in additional fact-finding to determine whether the child has, or may develop, the capacity to direct the lawyer's action in the particular context.

Mortuary Practices On Children, Stephanie Jo Fox Jan 1996

Mortuary Practices On Children, Stephanie Jo Fox

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is a reevaluation of past theories that recommend the use of mortuary practices to determine rank within cultures as applied to children. A comparative study of 40 cultures world wide is conducted using the Human Relation Area Files for ethnographic examples of mortuary practices. Funerary and mourning rituals performed for both children and adults are studied to see how the deceased's social position affects mortuary treatment. Thirteen of 26 egalitarian cultures that yielded information have funerary and mourning rituals that are the same or very similar for both adults and children. With thirteen remaining egalitarian cultures the data …

Children's Rights In Intercountry Adoption: Towards A New Goal, S. I. Strong Apr 1995

Children's Rights In Intercountry Adoption: Towards A New Goal, S. I. Strong

Faculty Publications

Each year, hundreds of thousands of children languish in foster or institutional care worldwide, while at the same time, thousands of adults, married and unmarried alike, are denied children because of “shortages.” How did this tragedy occur, and why does it continue to be repeated daily in countries around the world? The unfortunate truth is that many of the legal and societal norms now in place effectively prohibit needy children from finding suitable homes. While potential parents in Western countries cry out for babies of their own, millions of children live in physical and psychological poverty in underfunded orphanages around …

G95-1249 Dietary Guidelines For Children Age Two To Five, H. Darlene Martin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This publication discusses the dietary needs and guidelines for young children.

If you have children or care for children who are between two and five years of age, you play a significant role in their health. The quality of care you provide will benefit the children within your care now and in the future. To provide adequate food choices for children, you need to understand what foods help children grow and develop.

Most of us know that good health and proper nutrition are important. The first step in helping children learn good nutritional habits is to practice them daily yourself. …

G95-1248 Healthful Snacks For Children Two To Five Years Of Age, H. Darlene Martin Jan 1995

G95-1248 Healthful Snacks For Children Two To Five Years Of Age, H. Darlene Martin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This guide discusses the benefits of providing snacks to young children and shares ideas for what good snacks are for these children.

Why do children two to five years of age need snacks?

Snacks are an important part of children's daily food intake. It is difficult for children to get all the nutrients they need to promote growth and development in three meals a day. Also, most children need snacks because they get hungry between meals. Well-chosen snacks can help supply nutrients and energy needs (calories).

As a parent you may say, "My children do not need any more calories, …

The Influence Of Western Models Of Service Delivery On The Development Of Services For Young Children In Malaysia, Teresa Hutchins Jan 1995

The Influence Of Western Models Of Service Delivery On The Development Of Services For Young Children In Malaysia, Teresa Hutchins

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In the last fifty years, many developing and newly industrialising countries have experienced a rapid expansion of care and education programme for young children. The rapid expansion of these programmes which are often modelled on those from the west, together with new understandings about the nature of children's development, has led to concern that these programmes do not meet the needs of children living in very different social and cultural environments. The 1989 UNESCO review of early childhood care and education programmes in the Asia-Pacific region highlights the need for integrated early childhood care and education programmes and reports that …

Unblinded Mandatory Hiv Screening Of Newborns: Care Or Coercion?, Linda Farber Post Aug 1994

Unblinded Mandatory Hiv Screening Of Newborns: Care Or Coercion?, Linda Farber Post

Cardozo Law Review

The image of mother and child is perhaps the most universal symbol of love and protection. The concept of mother and sick child evokes instant compassion and the desire to do somethinganything-to help the mother help her baby. When the disease is both incurable and fatal, there is the expectation that the combined efforts of the state and the medical community will be mobilized to intervene on behalf of those who are afflicted. This Note looks at one such attempt and considers, not the good intentions that prompted it, but the legal ramifications of its implementation.

G95-1233 Food Safety For Child Care Facilities, Julie A. Albrecht Jan 1994

G95-1233 Food Safety For Child Care Facilities, Julie A. Albrecht

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide outlines proper techniques for providing safe food in child care facilities.

Children are at high risk for food-borne illnesses. Young children are particularly vulnerable to microbial food-borne diseases because of their under-developed immune systems.

In recent years, reports of food-borne illnesses have made headlines. Most of these outbreaks involved food prepared away from home. Many cases of food-borne illness go unreported because the symptoms are similar to the flu.

Foods contaminated with microorganisms are the cause of food-borne illnesses. Contaminated food does not, however, always taste bad, smell bad, or look bad. Therefore, it is almost impossible to …
