Momentum Clinic For Teen And Young Adult Cancer Patients, Merian O'Neil
Momentum Clinic For Teen And Young Adult Cancer Patients, Merian O'Neil
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the needs of teen and young adult cancer patients undergoing long-term chemotherapy treatments and the design of an outpatient clinic that accommodates this population’s unique needs. Most teens endure long-term treatments in a pediatric facility targeted primarily for children, while others are treated in adult facilities. Teens have different privacy and social needs than children, and while they are not adults, they are involved in their own treatment decisions, unlike children. The target age group for this study is teens and young adults, ages thirteen to twenty-two. A common theme emerged from research and interviews conducted in …

Design, Synthesis And Physicochemical Analysis Of Ruthenium(Ii) Polypyridyl Complexes For Application In Phototherapy And Nucleic Acid Sensing, Erin Melissa Wachter
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Current chemotherapeutics exhibit debilitating side effects as a result of their toxicity to healthy tissues. Reducing these side effects by developing chemotherapeutics with selectivity for cancer cells is an active area of research. Phototherapy is one promising modality for selective treatment, where drug molecules are “turned on” when irradiated with light, reducing damage to healthy tissues by spatially restricting the areas exposed to irradiation. A second approach to improve selectivity is to exploit the differences in cancerous versus healthy cells, such as increased metabolism and/or upregulation of cell surface receptors. Ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes are candidates for phototherapy due to their …
Synthesis And Characterization Of C8 And N2 2'-Deoxyguanosine Adducts Of 6-Nitrochrysene, A Cancer-Causing Agent, Kimberly R. Rebello
Synthesis And Characterization Of C8 And N2 2'-Deoxyguanosine Adducts Of 6-Nitrochrysene, A Cancer-Causing Agent, Kimberly R. Rebello
Master's Theses
Nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are ubiquitous in the environment, and many compounds of this family are carcinogenic. 6-Nitrochrysene, a representative member of this group, is a suspected human carcinogen that has been shown to cause lung, breast, and other forms of cancer in rodents. It is believed that this derivative of chrysene causes cancer by forming DNA adducts, which, in turn, induce mutations in critical gene sequences. The goal of my research is to synthesize one or more of the major DNA adducts formed by 6-nitrochrysene, which will be introduced in DNA in order to study their biological effects.
The initiation …

The -aminooxy derivative of the Thomsen–Friedenreich tumor associated carbohydrate antigen has been synthesized in 11 steps utilizing a D-GalN3 acceptor carrying a pre-installed -N-hydroxysuccinimidyl moiety. The natural linkage was prepared in high selectivity employing a suitably protected D-GalN3-thioglycoside donor with N-hydroxysuccinimide. With access to -TF-ONH2, the preparation of the TF-PS A1 vaccine candidate ensued smoothly through oxime bond formation. This construct …

Synthesis And Anti-Proliferative Activity Of N,N’-Bis(Arylmethyl)Benzimidazolium Salts, Travis M. Williams
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
A series of N,N’-bis(arylmethyl)benzimidazolium salts with hydrophilic and lipophilic substituents have been synthesized, characterized, and tested against select non-small cell cancer cell lines. Substituent variations on the imidazole ring have shown that lipophilicity and hydrophilicity can influence the imidazolium salts’ anti-proliferative activity and aqueous solubility.
Synthesis And Biological Study Of Adenylyl Cyclase Inhibitors, Siyuan Sun, Zhishi Ye, Mingji Dai
Synthesis And Biological Study Of Adenylyl Cyclase Inhibitors, Siyuan Sun, Zhishi Ye, Mingji Dai
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Adenylyl cyclases (AC) is a critical family of enzymes which modulates the dynamic cellular level of cAMP, cyclic adenosine monophosphate. The study of cAMP showed that it is indispensable for the signal transduction cascades during many physiological processes, such as immune responses and metabolism which highly relate to cancers. Previous studies of AC inhibitors have been limited due to a lack of isoform-selective small molecule modulators. Selectivity of the molecules is imperative to the activation of only the desired AC inhibitor. The design of the described project was to test the structure activity relationship (SAR) by synthesizing a class of …

SIGNIFICANCE: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated by exogenous and environmental genotoxins, but also arise from mitochondria as byproducts of respiration in the body. ROS generate DNA damage of which pathological consequence, including cancer is well established. Research efforts are intense to understand the mechanism of DNA base excision repair, the primary mechanism to protect cells from genotoxicity caused by ROS.
RECENT ADVANCES: In addition to the notion that oxidative DNA damage causes transformation of cells, recent studies have revealed how the mitochondrial deficiencies and ROS generation alter cell growth during the cancer transformation.
CRITICAL ISSUES: The emphasis of this …
The Design, Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Taxoid Anticancer Agents And Their Tumor-Targeted Drug Conjugates, Joshua Seitz
The Design, Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Taxoid Anticancer Agents And Their Tumor-Targeted Drug Conjugates, Joshua Seitz
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States and is responsible for one in eight deaths worldwide. Traditional chemotherapeutics target the processes involved in cell division and consequently produce dangerous and dose-limiting side effects. In an effort to identify the therapeutic windown of these drugs, tumor targeted drug conjugates (TTDCs) are currently under development. The Ojima lab has developed and extensive panel of next-generation taxoids that possess the requisite sub-nanomolar potency for incorporation into effective conjugates. A small library of 17 taxoids was synthesized and their cytotoxicity investigated. Selected taxoids were synthesized on the half-gram to …

Polymer Microsystems For The Enrichment Of Circulating Tumor Cells And Their Clinical Demonstration, Joyce W. Kamande
Polymer Microsystems For The Enrichment Of Circulating Tumor Cells And Their Clinical Demonstration, Joyce W. Kamande
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Cancer research is centered on the discovery of new biomarkers that could unlock the obscurities behind the mechanisms that cause cancer or those associated with its spread (i.e., metastatic disease). Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have emerged as attractive biomarkers for the management of many cancer-related diseases due primarily to the ease of securing them from a simple blood draw. However, their rarity (~1 CTC per mL of whole blood) makes enrichment analytically challenging. Microfluidic systems are viewed as exquisite platforms for the clinical analysis of CTCs due to their ability to be used in an automated fashion, minimizing sample loss …
Design, Synthesis, And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Polyamine Transport System Probes And Their Application To Human Cancers, Aaron Muth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The mammalian polyamine transport system (PTS) has been of interest due to its roles in cancer and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Polyamines are essential growth factors which are tightly controlled via a balance of biosynthesis, metabolism, import, and export. This work focused on the development and biological testing of polyamine transport probes to help understand the molecular requirements of the PTS. This was mediated through the use of a CHO (PTS active) and CHO-MG* (PTS deficient) screen, where compounds demonstrating high toxicity in CHO and low toxicity in CHO-MG* were considered PTS selective. The first chapter focused on the development of …

We examined the association between different types of prayer and depressive symptoms—with rumination and social support as potential mediators—in a sample of predominantly White, Christian, and female ambulatory cancer patients. In a cross-sectional design, 179 adult cancer outpatients completed measures of prayer, rumination, social support, depressive symptoms, and demographic variables. Type and stage of cancer were collected from electronic medical charts. Depressive symptoms were negatively correlated with adoration prayer (r = −.15), reception prayer (r = −.17), thanksgiving prayer (r = −.29), and prayer for the well-being of others (r = −.26). In the path analysis, …

Synthesis, Structural Characterization And Biological Studies Of Organotin Polyethers (Sn-O), Girish Vallabhbhai Barot
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the western world. In order to treat various types of cancer, platinum-based drugs are most widely employed as metal-containing chemotherapeutic agents. However, their clinical usage is hindered by toxic side effects, and by the emergence of drug resistance. Our focus was to replace platinum with less toxic metal like tin which can give better alternatives for cancer treatment. The major aim of our study was to synthesize novel organotin polyethers (Sn-O) which can be used to combat cancer. Preliminary results from our laboratory using organotin polyethers, that were synthesized by varying …
