Does Computer-Based Classroom Instruction Impact Student Participation?, Paige Hyer

MOT Student Capstones

COVID-19 has caused a disruption of typical teaching methods forcing students to receive instruction virtually. Computer-based classroom instruction was implemented to allow for quick transition between virtual and face-to-face instruction as determined by COVID-19 cases. This research explores how computer-based classroom instruction has impacted student participation within the classroom and the role of occupational therapy to support students who utilize this method of learning. Eighteen elementary school teachers who currently utilize this method of learning were surveyed and data was collected to determine feedback on the impact of computer-based classroom instruction. Data determined that student participation is impacted by computer-based …

Media And The Covid-19 Infodemic, Alek Nelson

Student Research Symposium

The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked an associated infodemic: a wave of misinformation and disinformation. From conspiracy theories about the origin of the virus to beliefs that 5G technology spreads the virus, there is no shortage of myths about the pandemic. This study focuses on where people were receiving news about the pandemic and how that affects belief in misinformation. Through an online survey, researchers also looked at how active vs. passive news consumption and political partisanship affected beliefs in disinformation. These findings can help us understand how the infodemic spreads and how misinformation thrives among certain demographics.Presentation Time: Thursday, 10-11 …

Covid 19 & Impulsive Spending, Rebekah Miller Apr 2021

Covid 19 & Impulsive Spending, Rebekah Miller

Student Research Symposium

Everyone responds to negative emotions in a different way. One response less-frequently spoken of is shopping, commonly referred to as “retail therapy”. In 2020 the world was thrown into chaos by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lock downs, riots and overrun hospitals. In this study we wanted to look at the correlation between anxiety and shopping behaviors, primarily impulsive vs cognitive purchasing. With a voluntary survey (N=81) we found that 46% (N=37) of people used shopping therapeutically to some extent. We also found a positive correlation between those that used shopping as a way to relieve …

Can You Social Distance In A Crowded National Park?, Madison Vega

Student Research Symposium

Visitation to parks and protected areas is a common COVID-19 coping strategy promoted by state and national public health officials and political leadership. Crowding and congestions in parks has been a perennial problem and the ability to socially distance within them is an unproven assumption. Is it possible to socially distance in a busy national park that has been designed to concentrate use?Presentation Time: Thursday, 3-4 p.m.

A Risk Assessment Tool For Resumption Of Research Activities During The Covid-19 Pandemic For Field Trials In Low Resource Settings, Suzanne M Simkovich, Victor G Davila-Roman, Lisa De Las Fuentes, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

RATIONALE: The spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 has suspended many non-COVID-19 related research activities. Where restarting research activities is permitted, investigators need to evaluate the risks and benefits of resuming data collection and adapt procedures to minimize risk.

OBJECTIVES: In the context of the multicountry Household Air Pollution Intervention (HAPIN) trial conducted in rural, low-resource settings, we developed a framework to assess the risk of each trial activity and to guide protective measures. Our goal is to maximize the integrity of reseach aims while minimizing infection risk based on the latest scientific understanding of the virus.

METHODS: We …

Us Political Leadership And Crisis Communication During Covid-19, Daryl V. Watkins, Aaron D. Clevenger

Publications

The research explored the role of political leadership in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The researchers conducted a political discourse analysis on 239 transcripts from the press briefings of President Trump and seven U. S. governors to determine the extent to which the research subjects used effective crisis leadership and communication. These results suggest that President Trump and Governors DeSantis, DeWine, Ducey, and Ivey are particularly vulnerable to political fallout for their handling of COVID-19 because stakeholders might view them as inattentive to the crisis and ineffective in their policy responses. Governors Cuomo, Newsom, and Whitmer may be in …

Medicine And The Media, Baylee Dusenberry

Student Research Symposium

PROBLEM: The media has become a normalized part of American society. The use of media in reporting COVID-19 is a prime example of how media can impact a public's medical knowledge and opinion. The main concern: are people properly filtering the influx of information between evidence-based practices and medical opinion? With the accessibility of information comes a likelihood that the public isn't doing their part to fact-check what they're given. Inaccurate information can cause health issues among the public. STUDY DESIGN: The study design will be a representational online survey sent to American Adults ages 18 years and older. Univariate-ANOVA …

Simulated Contact Tracing Of Covid-19 Propagation At Kutztown University For Fall 2020, Dale E. Parson Apr 2021

Simulated Contact Tracing Of Covid-19 Propagation At Kutztown University For Fall 2020, Dale E. Parson

Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty

From mid-May through August 2020 the author designed, built, revised, and analyzed resulting data from two simulation programs for virtual contact tracing of COVID-19 infection propagation at Kutztown University in the fall 2020 semester. The first was command-line driven and non-graphical, with results distributed to faculty and administrators on May 28. The second was a three-dimensional interactive graphical simulation, distributed to faculty, administrators, and the public as a narrated video via YouTube on July 16. The algorithm is an adaptation of spreading activation as used in theoretical psychology and artificial intelligence research since the 1970s. It propagates discrete, probable infections …

Understanding Doorhandle Microbes At Swosu, Larry Don Cossey Iii, Regina Mcgrane

Student Research

With the onset of COVID-19 all eyes were on the microscopic world. Increased sanitation and proper hygiene slowed the spread of the virus, and there were many other tactics used to battle COVID-19. One of these tactics was to limit the number of times people crossed paths. Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) developed guidelines regarding the movement of students through buildings when hybrid classes began in the fall 2020.

The recent outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) calls for rapid mobilization of scientists to probe and explore solutions to this deadly disease. A limited understanding of the high transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) relative to other coronavirus strains guides a deeper investigation into the virus/receptor interactions. The cutting-edge studies in thermodynamic and kinetic properties of interactions such as protein-protein interplays have been reviewed in many modeling and analysis studies. Highlighting the thermodynamic assessments of biological interactions and emphasizing the boosted transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 despite its high similarity in structure and sequence with other coronavirus strains …
