Mitigating Isolation Of People Aging With Hiv During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Brandon Brown, Jeff Taylor, Celia B. Fisher

Covid-19 Digital Research

Before COVID-19, the HIV/AIDS pandemic had arguably been the worst public health crisis in the United States. Although an HIV diagnosis was previously regarded as a death sentence, the development of combination therapy in the 1990s transformed HIV into a largely manageable chronic condition.

Medical Populism And Covid-19 Testing, Kristin Hedges, Gideon Lasco Apr 2021

Medical Populism And Covid-19 Testing, Kristin Hedges, Gideon Lasco

Development Studies Faculty Publications

This paper uses the lens of medical populism to analyze the impact of biocommunicability on COVID-19 testing through a case study approach. The political efficacy of testing is traced through two mini-case studies: the Philippines and the United States. The case studies follow the approach of populism scholars in drawing from various sources that ‘render the populist style visible’ from the tweets and press releases of government officials to media reportage. Using the framework of medical populism, the case studies pay attention to the ways in which coronavirus testing figured in (1) simplification of the pandemic; (2) spectacularization of the …

Uvc Disinfection Of Covid-19 And Associated Bacteria On Personal Protective Equipment, Ryden Christopher Smith Apr 2021

Uvc Disinfection Of Covid-19 And Associated Bacteria On Personal Protective Equipment, Ryden Christopher Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic has been an unprecedented public health crisis around the world and has created novel needs in the healthcare industry. Primary among these needs is a vast shortage in personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and gloves. This is problematic due to the near constant of COVID-19 cases in hospitals around the United States. In an effort to meet the need for more PPE, new disinfection techniques must be found to "recycle" used PPE. UVC light has previously been used by healthcare facilities for years to disinfect surfaces such as stainless steel and are frequently used in …

Covid-19 And Challenges To The Traditional Understanding Of Individual Medical Autonomy, Callon A. Green Apr 2021

Covid-19 And Challenges To The Traditional Understanding Of Individual Medical Autonomy, Callon A. Green

Honors Theses

Throughout history, vaccines have provided the human population with the ability to combat dangerous illnesses and avoid preventable suffering. Despite the benefits vaccines provide to the public health of the United States, anti-vaccination sentiment and resistance to vaccine uptake are still prevalent in the modern day. As the COVID-19 pandemic has developed into a major public health crisis that can be controlled through vaccination, the issues underlying vaccine resistance are becoming more critical to return to normal life. Using COVID-19 as a case study, it is evident that the individual choice to deny vaccination can have consequences on the health …

Covidetect: A Desktop Application As A Diagnostic Tool For Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pneumonia In Chest X-Ray Images Using Convolutional Neural Network, Vincent A. Arellano, Michael Angelo C. Tolentino

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress

The COVID-19 pandemic has heavily affected the well-being of people worldwide. Current diagnostic tools, like the RT-PCR, are expensive and time-consuming; thus, there is a need for cheaper and faster means of COVID-19 detection. This study proposes using a desktop application with a convolutional neural network (CNN) and visual analysis as a supplementary diagnostic tool for detecting COVID-19 pneumonia in chest X-ray images. The CNN used is a sequential Keras model that was trained and tested through eight epochs using an augmented dataset. Random data augmentation techniques applied were rotation and horizontal flipping, which increased the total images used to …

Innovative Virtual Role Play Simulations For Managing Substance Use Conversations: Pilot Study Results And Relevance During And After Covid-19, Glenn Albright, Nikita Khalid, Kristen Shockley, Kelsey Robinson, Kevin Hughes, Bethany Pace-Danley

Publications and Research

Background: Substance use places a substantial burden on our communities, both economically and socially. In light of COVID-19, it is predicted that as many as 75,000 more people will die from alcohol and other substance use and suicide as a result of isolation, new mental health concerns, and various other stressors related to the pandemic. Public awareness campaigns that aim to destigmatize substance use and help individuals have meaningful conversations with friends, coworkers, or family members to address substance use concerns are a timely and cost-effective means of augmenting existing behavioral health efforts related to substance use. These types of …

Surveying Pediatric Caregivers’ Readiness For Dyad Isolation In The Hospital During Covid-19, Shanqing Yin, Mei Zi Quek, Celestine Mun Ting Yeo, Sylvia Mun, Ronghui Li, Derrick Chan

Patient Experience Journal

The onset of any emerging outbreak is stressful for everyone. Singapore was one of many countries affected early by COVID-19. In response, many precautionary measures were quickly initiated, including the isolation of suspected COVID-19 pediatric cases, and their caregivers were isolated together with their hospitalized children as a result. Caregivers play an important role in facilitating their child’s health in the hospital. Rooming in with their children during hospitalization promotes the benefits of parental presence and reduces separation effects. However, sudden admission with strict movement restrictions poses stress to these caregivers too. This study ran a 3-part paper-based survey to …

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Unique Patient Experience Response Program That Provided Virtual, Visual And Emotional Connectivity To Patients And Families During The Covid-19 Crisis, Diane Burshtein, Donna Powers

Patient Experience Journal

In April 2020, the New York State Department of Health issued guidelines regarding suspension of hospital visitation due to coronavirus disease 2019 to protect staff and patients and prevent spread of the virus. Recognizing that patients would need extraordinary emotional support as they faced this frightening journey, two hospitals from a health system in the national epicenter provided avenues to bridge gaps in connectedness and communication. Our program provided virtual, visual and emotional connectivity by utilizing repurposed staff to serve as patient experience ambassadors. This program reduced the burden on clinical staff while preventing furlough. A descriptive correlational study …

The Influence Of Covid-19 Visitation Restrictions On Patient Experience And Safety Outcomes: A Critical Role For Subjective Advocates, Geoffrey A. Silvera, Jason A. Wolf Phd, Anthony Stanowski, Quint Studer

Patient Experience Journal

With the emergence of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States in early 2020, hospitals across the country made the difficult decision to alter visitation policies, by either limiting visitations or restricting visitations altogether by closing access to family, friends and care partners in an effort to reduce further spread of the virus. While there is foundational research on the impact of family and care partner presence on the experience of patients and patient safety outcomes, the actions driven by the pandemic allowed for a real-time comparison of the impact of family or care partner presence or lack thereof. …

No Visitors Allowed: How Health Systems Can Better Engage Patients’ Families During A Pandemic, Jennifer Schlimgen, Amy Frye

Patient Experience Journal

The ravages of COVID -19 and the no visitor policies that accompany it have forged a tectonic shift in the patient and family experience. This hit home for me with a recent family member health event and hospitalization, leading me to think “we HAVE to do better!” Why should hospitals and health systems care about family involvement during COVID-19?
