The Dangerous Divide: How A Pandemic Exposed The Problem Of Older Adults And Equal Access And How Libraries Are Helping, Rene Ostberg
The Dangerous Divide: How A Pandemic Exposed The Problem Of Older Adults And Equal Access And How Libraries Are Helping, Rene Ostberg
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract: Since the digital divide was identified as a pressing equity of access issue in the mid-1990s, several demographic groups have consistently fallen on the negative side of the divide. One of these is older adults, or adults age 65 and over. Surveys by various organizations ranging from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration to the Pew Research Center have identified systemic disparities such as income, geography, and education level as leading factors in the digital divide. These disparities further compound with age, race, ethnicity, language, and ability to keep some groups at a disadvantage when …

It Usage In Auditing And The Impact Of Covid-19, Olivia Beechem
Undergraduate Theses
The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed the world as we know it, and the audit field is no exception. The transition for a majority of public accounting firms and their clients to remote work amidst a global pandemic sparked my interest in the already rapidly evolving field of audit IT usage, which continually affects audit quality and efficiency. My research expands on existing studies completed on this topic prior to COVID-19 and includes three main research objectives. First, my research examines the usage and perceived importance of common types of IT audit applications, such as CAATs and data analytics, as …

One key to curtailing the health costs of COVID-19 is adherence to social distancing measures. Despite their importance, distancing measures seem to have proved divisive. The present research sought to identify ideological differences in behavioral compliance to distancing measures and to account for the psychological underpinnings of behavioral differences. A first study (April, 2020; N=571) using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk revealed conservatives to be significantly less likely to obey social distancing recommendations than liberals. Differences among conservatives and liberals in adherence to self-reported social distancing practices were significantly mediated by perceived COVID-19 health risk and perceived media accuracy in covering the …

Stress, Alcohol Use, And Punitive Parenting During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jennifer Price Wolf, Bridget Freisthler, Caileigh Chadwick
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Background
Emerging research suggests that parents are experiencing heightened stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Parental stress is a risk factor for harsh or punitive parenting, and this association may be exacerbated by the use of alcohol.
Objective
We examine whether parental stress is associated with use of punitive parenting, as well as whether this association is modified by drinking pattern.
Participants & setting
We used advertisements and word-of-mouth to recruit 342 parents living in Central Ohio during the initial stay-at-home order for COVID-19.
Methods
We used geographic ecological momentary assessment (gEMA) to measure parental stress and punitive parenting during three …

Online symptom checkers (OSC) are widely used intelligent systems in health contexts such as primary care, remote healthcare, and epidemic control. OSCs use algorithms such as machine learning to facilitate self-diagnosis and triage based on symptoms input by healthcare consumers. However, intelligent systems’ lack of transparency and comprehensibility could lead to unintended consequences such as misleading users, especially in high-stakes areas such as healthcare. In this paper, we attempt to enhance diagnostic transparency by augmenting OSCs with explanations. We first conducted an interview study (N=25) to specify user needs for explanations from users of existing OSCs. Then, we designed a …

Disruptions occur regularly, regardless of size of impact. Disruptions libraries face can include budget cuts, environmental disasters, building issues, and technological failures. Any type of disruption can and will dampen the level of service provided by libraries but the ability to quickly overcome the disruption while moving forward with organizational goals is vital. Resilience in organizations is not a new concept, but the high level of resilience exuded by libraries despite the disruptions they face is worth noting. The Spanish Influenza and COVID-19 pandemics have significantly disrupted library operations. The similarities between the two pandemics are astounding and in both …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed nurses to exhaustion while leaving them with compassion fatigue (CF) and burnout (BO). Compassion fatigue is secondary to traumatic stress and exposure, while burnout is the state of exhaustion of one’s ability to manage with their work and personal everyday stressors. This study aimed to determine whether a daily use of a meditation app could change quality of life indicators amongst front-line nurses affected by COVID-19. With the help of the ProQol assessment tool, along with a pre and post intervention surveys, participants’ awareness and personal experiences were evaluated. The study consisted of nurses …

Medical Volunteers During Pandemics, Disasters, And Other Emergencies: Management Best Practices, John I. Winn, Seth Chatfield, Kevin H. Govern
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
How best to utilize volunteers[1] during medical emergencies is an essential part of hospital compliance planning. Onboarding recruited and spontaneous volunteers during crisis situations require careful consideration of multiple legal issues. Volunteer planning becomes more complex if volunteers move across state lines because applicable tort immunity statutes,[2] compensation limits,[3]and workers compensation regimes vary significantly from one jurisdiction to another. Effective planning for volunteers requires these and other issues to be addressed well in advance of actual emergencies. Although predicting the scope or severity of any future crisis is impossible, the provided checklist of management best practices …

Fundamental Causes Of Racial And Ethnic Covid-19-Related Health Disparities, Hana Neutz
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Underserved low-income communities of color in the U.S. have endured an unequal burden of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. This pattern of pandemic-related health disparities has been pervasive throughout history. However, no known studies have simultaneously examined social and biological factors that contribute to these concerning health disparities. Therefore, this paper aims to bridge the gap by employing a scoping literature review of (1) the deleterious impacts of systemic racism on COVID-19-related outcomes; and (2) the cellular and molecular mechanisms connecting COVID-19 and hypertension (a comorbidity known to exacerbate COVID-19 severity). My findings indicate that systemic racism manifests in inequitable access …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To identify and address the challenges associated with the care of ACS patients during the coronavirus 2019 pandemic.
RECENT FINDINGS: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a considerable global impact with over 2.0 million deaths worldwide so far. There has been considerable evidence suggesting that COVID-19 increases the risk of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). We propose characterizing ACS patients into 3 distinct categories to better assist in appropriate triage and management: critically ill patients, non-critically ill ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients, and non-critically ill non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI)/unstable angina (UA) patients. We thoroughly review treatments strategies, …

Journal of Refugee & Global Health
Refugees are a vulnerable population who experience significant health disparities. They may also be at disproportionately high risk of adverse outcomes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper presents the results of a community needs assessment to investigate the impact of the pandemic on health and welfare in a refugee relocation community in the United States. A multilingual data collection team made up of refugees surveyed 179 participants (128 refugees vs. 51 non-refugees). Only 55.9% of refugee respondents said they would be able to provide enough food for their family this week, compared with 84.0% of non-refugees (p < 0.01), and this difference was even greater for food next week …
