This literature synthesis addresses key findings regarding the prevention, assessment, and treatment of substance use during the COVID-19 pandemic, negative sequelae associated with public health recommendations during the pandemic and a forecast for the future. An example of how grassroots community organizations can rapidly pivot to ensure clients’ needs are being met is also provided. Policy implications of …

The Disproportionate Impact Of Covid-19 On Women, Ava Stallone
Honors Scholar Theses
The impact of COVID-19 is placing a large strain on women. This can be seen through reports of mental health and financial concerns. Women are more vulnerable to COVID-19 related economic effects due to existing gender inequalities, which in turn may also have a negative effect on mental health. Through this study gender disproportion is looked at between mental health and COVID-19 financial concerns among women and men. The aim is to asses how COVID-19 financial concerns may be contributing to stress, anxiety, and depression. It is hypothesized that; women will report worse mental health and greater economic concerns than …

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected over 165 million people and caused the death of 3.4 million worldwide (up to May 20, 2021) (https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html), becoming a serious problem of global public health and the worst epidemic in the last century, after the pandemic 1918 influenza. Researchers worldwide are trying to find valuable drugs against the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Some of them focused as antivirals, others targeted in other ways (e.g. immunomodulation) to relieve the symptoms of the infected patients and help lower the death toll throughout the world. Unfortunately, there is a lack of …

Growth of the information economy and globalization of labor markets will be marked by exponential growth in emerging technologies that will cause considerable disruption of the social and economic sectors that drive the global job market. These disruptions will alter the way we work, where we work, and will be further affected by the changing demographic characteristics and level of training of the available workforce. These changes will likely result in scenarios where existing workplace hazards are exacerbated and new hazards with unknown health effects are created. The pace of these changes heralds an urgent need for a proactive approach …

In this work we aim to study the spread of fake news compared to real news in a social network. We do that by performing classical social network analysis to discover various characteristics, and formulate the problem as a binary classification, where we have graphs modeling the spread of fake and real news. For our experiments we rely on how news are propagated through a popular social media services such as …

Pace International Law Review
The emergence and quick spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the focus and dynamics of the debates about global health, international law, and policy. This shift has overshadowed many of the other controversies in the international sphere. It has also highlighted the tensions that often exist in international affairs—especially in understanding the place and purpose of international institutions, vis-à-vis states, in the general schema of public international law. Central to the international response to the current pandemic is the World Health Organization (WHO)—a treaty-based organization charged with the overarching mandate of ensuring “the highest possible level of health” for …
