Four Positive Lessons Learned During The 2020–2021 Covid-19 Global Pandemic: Implications For Spirituality In Clinical Practice, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

While the COVID-19 global pandemic has wrecked havoc for over a year in ways that we have not seen in our lifetimes, many important positive lessons have been learned during these tumultuous and what has felt like apocalyptic times. Upon close reflection, four critical and positive lessons were learned by this author that have implications for how we productively move forward in our efforts to provide spiritually and religiously informed psychotherapy services both now and in the future. These important lessons include the benefits of telehealth and “telespirit” services as well as highlighting the advantages of reflection, discernment, and resetting …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Active Transportation, Timothy Scott Mcbirney Jun 2021

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Active Transportation, Timothy Scott Mcbirney

City and Regional Planning

This research project examines the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had and will continue to have on active transportation, in particular, cycling. This research was initiated by my own interest in cycling for both recreational and utility purposes as well as articles I had read on the rise in recreational cycling over the course of the pandemic. I wanted to understand and summarize the best practices for converting the increase in cycling for recreation into a meaningful, long-term shift toward active modes in urban transportation in the future. This paper explores how the pandemic has impacted active transportation around the country …

Social Intervention By The Numbers: Evidence Behind The Specific Public Health Guidelines In The Covid-19 Pandemic., Michael P. Savage, David L. Fischman, Mamas A. Mamas

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly become a worldwide pandemic ushering in a global health and economic crisis. In the absence of vaccines or definitive drug therapies, current strategies against COVID-19 rely on preventing the transmission of disease through nonpharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing and proper hand hygiene. For practical and perhaps ethical reasons, the clinical efficacy of these public health measures for managing pandemics has not been demonstrated in randomized controlled clinical trials. Accordingly, guideline recommendations for using nonpharmaceutical interventions are based primarily on observational and modeling studies and on expert opinion. A recent position paper from the …

Benevolent Exclusion, Anna Offit Jun 2021

Benevolent Exclusion, Anna Offit

Washington Law Review

The American jury system holds the promise of bringing common sense ideas about justice to the enforcement of the law. But its democratizing effect cannot be realized if a segment of the population faces systematic exclusion based on income or wealth. The problem of unequal access to jury service based on socio-economic disparities is a longstanding yet under-studied problem—and one which the uneven fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated. Like race- and sex-based jury discrimination during the peremptory challenge phase of jury selection, the routine dismissal of citizens who face economic hardship excludes not only people but also the …

Strategic Default And Moral Hazard In Real Estate: Insights From Machine Learning Applications, Arka Prava Bandyopadhyay Jun 2021

Strategic Default And Moral Hazard In Real Estate: Insights From Machine Learning Applications, Arka Prava Bandyopadhyay

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Strategic default has been the achilles heel in academic finance for decades. By definition, whether a default has occurred due to strategic motive is unobservable. Moreover, a household has only so many avenues of conducting a strategic default. I use the context of commercial mortgages as property value as well property cashflow co-determine the default decision of these borrowers. I tease out the different strategic aspects of default from the ones emanating from liquidity constraints. The recent advances in Deep Neural Network (DNN), the advent of big data and the computational power associated with it has enabled me to disentangle …

I Think We Have Some Connection Difficulty: A Review Of Architectural Vocabulary And Representation In Our Condition Of Remote Communication, David Waite Jun 2021

I Think We Have Some Connection Difficulty: A Review Of Architectural Vocabulary And Representation In Our Condition Of Remote Communication, David Waite

Masters Theses

The distance required to slow this pandemic created a need for Zoom technology in maintaining our economies of mental production and social closeness. Just like scientists examined the COVID-19 virus globally in its petri under the electron microscope, Zoom exposed our domestic interiors. This platform stitched together our personal existence into an infinite interior. To some extent this places Zoom attendees into a new space of vulnerability where the platform turns passive observers into active participants in a hyper self-aware virtual world where all are forced to share their fragile environments of everyday life.

While videotelephony software thankfully facilitated communication …

Law School In A Pandemic: Student Perspectives On Distance Learning And Lessons For The Future, Gallup, Accesslex Institute Jun 2021

Law School In A Pandemic: Student Perspectives On Distance Learning And Lessons For The Future, Gallup, Accesslex Institute

Commissioned Research

When COVID-19 forced colleges and universities across the United States to send their students home and transition to a distance learning model for the duration of the Spring 2020 term, many faculty and staff had only the time afforded by an extended spring break to shift their curricula to online courses. But even if these faculty were given a full two weeks to prepare, that window would have been just a fraction of the four to six months some universities suggest dedicating to the development of a fully online course — to say nothing of the impact the pandemic may …

Care: Covid-19 Abatement Return To Education, Matteo Marsella, Emma Oneto, Janis Iourovitski

General Engineering

The COVID-19 pandemic poses new challenges in many aspects of life and society. Being that the prime ethical responsibility of engineers is to keep people safe, our sponsor, John Nielsen, asked us to develop a solution that addresses a current or anticipated need related to the ongoing COVID- 19 pandemic. We entered a needs-finding phase to search for problems caused by COVID-19 that people want or need to be solved. We identified K-12 education as an area that has undergone drastic changes due to the pandemic. After conducting interviews with educators, we found that K-12 teachers need a way to …

An Analysis On The Future Of Parklets In San Luis Obispo, Reid Crandell, Aidan Lebow

City and Regional Planning

Currently, the parklet program in San Luis Obispo is a temporary program that utilizes encroachment permits to allow businesses to utilize sidewalks and a portion of the street for outdoor dining. With the emergence of parklets around the country due to COVID-19, commercial uses have been able to stay in business while adhering to the social distancing guidelines. Another added benefit has been the overall public enjoyment of utilizing parklets. Specifically in San Luis Obispo, the parklet program has made it easy for businesses to operate with added space. The question we asked in this project was whether or not …

Department of Family Medicine

As the world struggles to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, this article talks about the experience and findings of the first COVID-19 screening facility in a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Department of Family Medicine at Aga Khan University (AKU) took initiative where COVID-19 screening of stable patients first began in a dedicated area. Since testing kits were limited and community spread had not started, nurses would screen every walk-in patient based on the presence of fever, cough, travel history and exposure to COVID-19 positive patient in the last 14 days, and advise swab testing if indicated. Out of …

Needles In A Haystack: How Pooling Can Control Error Rates In Noisy Tests, Arockia David Roy Kulandai, J. Stella, John Rose, Thomas Schwarz Jun 2021

Needles In A Haystack: How Pooling Can Control Error Rates In Noisy Tests, Arockia David Roy Kulandai, J. Stella, John Rose, Thomas Schwarz

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Testing many individuals for a reasonably rare condition using imperfect, time consuming, and expensive tests can be facilitated by pooling. Pooling groups samples from different individuals that are then tested for the existence of a pathogen. An individual is diagnosed as a carrier if a threshold of the tests to which the individual contributed samples is positive. Our assumptions dictate a testing strategy that is not adaptive, with the exception of retesting positively diagnosed persons individually. Pooling is a standard proposal to stretch the supply of test kits. We show that it can also be used to control the false …

Modeling The Spread Of Covid-19 Over Varied Contact Networks, Ryan L. Solorzano Jun 2021

Modeling The Spread Of Covid-19 Over Varied Contact Networks, Ryan L. Solorzano

Master's Theses

When attempting to mitigate the spread of an epidemic without the use of a vaccine, many measures may be made to dampen the spread of the disease such as physically distancing and wearing masks. The implementation of an effective test and quarantine strategy on a population has the potential to make a large impact on the spread of the disease as well. Testing and quarantining strategies become difficult when a portion of the population are asymptomatic spreaders of the disease. Additionally, a study has shown that randomly testing a portion of a population for asymptomatic individuals makes a small impact …

Everyone I Have Every Crowed With 2021-, Hannah Lutz Winkler Jun 2021

Everyone I Have Every Crowed With 2021-, Hannah Lutz Winkler

Masters Theses

I started taking walks at sunset to feel better. It was January of 2021, nearly a year into the COVID pandemic. On these antidepressant walks, I kept running into crows, participating in their own sunset ritual, hundreds of them in a raucous shimmering black net. They flew around the city, my hometown, gathering, gossiping, and ultimately sleeping together in trees. I was both intoxicated by and jealous of the nightly crow party—standing under them was my only crowd experience in nine months. For the next three months, I tracked them every night I could. My solo practice of paying the …

The Reset: Connecting Internal Crisis Communication Strategy With Post-Pandemic Remote Worker Populations Through An Employee Engagement Framework, Erin Leigh Black Jun 2021

The Reset: Connecting Internal Crisis Communication Strategy With Post-Pandemic Remote Worker Populations Through An Employee Engagement Framework, Erin Leigh Black

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In the post-pandemic workforce, unprecedented events are the new normal. Although the remote worker revolution has been rumored for decades, in early 2020, the idea became an instant reality when global governments closed their borders, instituted lockdown, and ordered citizens to shelter-in-place (Weideman & Hofmeyr, 2020). Given the global shift in work, organizations have an immediate need to communicate with the crisis-ladened, post-pandemic, remote workforce; however, there is a sizable gap in research between internal crisis communication and the post-pandemic remote worker population. Through a phenomenologically based, interpretive analysis of current strategic and crisis communication research and frameworks, this project …

Divide And Conquer: A Hygienic, Efficient, And Reliable Assembly-Line For Housekeeping, Xiao Alison Chen, Rowan Wang, Jianghua Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Problem definition: This work focuses on the hotel housekeeping process. In a field study, a possible channel of disease transmission between consecutive guests in hotel rooms is revealed. In order to prevent the transmission, an innovative assembly-line housekeeping method is developed. Academic/practical relevance: The transmission of infectious diseases during hotel stays (e.g., by touching unclean towels or bed linens) has been reported globally. Under the current COVID-19 pandemic, having contact with saliva or mucus left by an infected person could cause infection. The standard housekeeping process used by the majority of hotels leaves a channel for new towels and bed …

The Gender Effects Of Covid-19 On Equity Analysts, Frank Weikai Li, Baolian Wang Jun 2021

The Gender Effects Of Covid-19 On Equity Analysts, Frank Weikai Li, Baolian Wang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We use the COVID-19 pandemic as a natural experiment to study the effects of childcare and household duties on sell-side analysts. The richness of this setting allows us to compare female and male analysts while requiring them to perform the same tasks. We find that female analysts' forecast accuracy declined more than male analysts, especially when schools were closed and among analysts who were more likely to have young children, inexperienced, were likely busier before the pandemic, and lived in southern states. Female analysts also reduced the timeliness of their forecasts and resorted to more heuristic forecasts. The stock market …

Community Healthcare Clinic - Adaptation System To The Pandemic And Post Pandemic Periods, Nhu Le

Masters Theses

Due to COVID-19, uncertainties and significant changes have been occurring around the world, especially in the U.S. The future is always ambiguous but it will lead to breakthroughs. Emerging issues are the vulnerability of previous conventional design solutions, especially of the healthcare-related architecture and urban planning.

This thesis focuses on helping construct a new healthcare system, which could be used during either a pandemic or post-pandemic era, by designing a local community clinic. In fact, public health clinics are always needed and expected to be more flexibly adjustable and up-gradable. Those new clinics play a very important role since the …

Balance The Conversations, Karen Kuo Jun 2021

Balance The Conversations, Karen Kuo

Masters Theses

This thesis aims to examine the role environmental factors play in people’s experience of the built environment, with a focus on the ongoing debate between individual freedom and collective responsibility of masks in the COVID-19 era. This thesis will argue that a middle ground that balances the relationship between individual and collective pursuits is necessary and can potentially be enabled through design. The project will articulate these ideas by using the debate around mask-wearing as a starting point to develop a broader manifesto forshaping the built environment.

During this ongoing global pandemic, we can’t deny that human behavior has been …

Do I Belong? What Students Teach Us About Belonging To A New University, Jennifer Ann Scaia

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Foundational to this evaluation study, the participating institution aspired to improve its retention rate. Students’ perceived sense of belonging has been identified as an important variable related to student retention and persistence (Bean & Eaton, 2000; Strayhorn 2012; Strayhorn 2019; Tinto, 2017). For students to succeed beyond their first year in college, it is fundamentally important that they view themselves as valued members of the university community (Bean & Eaton, 2000; Bollen & Hoyle, 1990; Murphy, 2016).

The purpose of this study was to evaluate how undergraduate students, predicted as less likely to retain into their second year, described their …
