METHODS: This comparative cohort study used a US multicenter research network (TriNetX) to extract data on all adult RA patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19, and adults without RA who were diagnosed with COVID-19 (comparative cohort) anytime from January 20, 2020 to April 11, 2021. COVID-19 outcomes were assessed within 30 days after its diagnosis. Baseline characteristics that included demographics and comorbidities were …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Utah Women And Work: Resilient Mindset And Wellbeing, Jared Hansen, Chris Hartwell, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020–2021 continues to impact all Utahns’ daily lives. Nationally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Pew Research Center, the Federal Reserve Bank, and sources such as the Wall Street Journal continue to report that women’s employment and careers have been disproportionately impacted during this time. Utah has seen similar negative impacts on working women. For example, the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah reported that from 2019 to 2020, jobs held by women declined at a rate more than double that of men, and unemployment rose more for females than males.

Association Between Post-Hospital Clinic And Telephone Follow-Up Provider Visits With 30-Day Readmission Risk In An Integrated Health System, Huong Q. Nguyen, Aileen Baecker, Timothy Ho, Dan N. Huynh, Heather L. Watson, Jing Li, Ernest Shen

Center for Health Services Research Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Follow-up visits with clinic providers after hospital discharge may not be feasible for some patients due to functional limitations, transportation challenges, need for physical distancing, or fear of exposure especially during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS: The aim of the study was to determine the effects of post-hospital clinic (POSH) and telephone (TPOSH) follow-up provider visits versus no visit on 30-day readmission. We used a retrospective cohort design based on data from 1/1/2017 to 12/31/2019 on adult patients (n = 213,513) discharged home from 15 Kaiser Permanente Southern California hospitals. Completion of POSH or TPOSH provider visits within …

Discrepancy Between Pcr Based Sars-Cov-2 Tests Suggests The Need To Re-Evaluate Diagnostic Assays, Zain Mushtaq, Sadia Shakoor, Akber Kanji, Najma Shaheen, Asghar Nasir, Zeeshan Ansar Ahmed, Imran Ahmed, Syed Faisal Mahmood, Rumina Hasan, Zahra Hasan

Section of Internal Medicine

Objective: We investigated the discrepancy between clinical and PCR-based diagnosis of COVID-19. We compared results of ten patients with mild to severe COVID-19. Respiratory samples from all cases were tested on the Roche SARS-CoV-2 (Cobas) assay, Filmarray RP2.1 (bioMereiux) and TaqPath™ COVID19 (Thermofisher) PCR assays.
Results: Laboratory records of ten patients with mild to severe COVID-19 were examined. Initially, respiratory samples from the patients were tested as negative on the SARS-CoV-2 Roche® assay. Further investigation using the BIOFIRE® Filmarray RP2.1 assay identified SARS-CoV-2 as the pathogen in all ten cases. To investigate possible discrepancies between PCR assays, additional testing was …

Subacute Thyroiditis Secondary To Moderna Covid-19 Vaccine: A Case Report Of A Rare Manifestation, Mayank Patel, Marika Shahid, Ahmad Khawaja, Chibuzor Ejike, Kavitha Vemuri

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

The SARS-CoV-2 led to a global pandemic, infecting millions of lives within only a short period of time. The symptoms of the disease vary with a subset of the population developing debilitating sequelae. Through the emergency use authorization (EUA), multiple vaccines have been released against the novel virus in record time. Long term and rare sequelae from the vaccine are poorly understood. DeQuervain’s subacute thyroiditis is a self-limiting and painful inflammation of the thyroid gland usually associated with viral infections. We report a rare case of subacute thyroiditis in a healthy 46-year-old woman presenting with a painful swelling in the …

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new strain of coronavirus that may cause illness in animals or humans. SARS-CoV-2 was first identified in late December 2019, in Wuhan, China. The coronavirus infected patients ‘who suffering from Immundeficient or chronic inflammation are at higher risk of getting a severe infection from COVID-19. The symptoms such as proinflammatory and hypercoagulable, non-cardiac pneumonia, multi-organ failure, and ARDS resulting in sudden death have been seen in those patients. Supportive treatment is still the main strategy in treating this disease since there is no evidence that current medicine can prevent or cure the infection resulting from …

Lag Time Between State-Level Policy Interventions And Change Points In Covid-19 Outcomes In The United States, Jaechoul Lee Aug 2021

Lag Time Between State-Level Policy Interventions And Change Points In Covid-19 Outcomes In The United States, Jaechoul Lee

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

State-level policy interventions have been critical in managing the spread of the new coronavirus. Here, we study the lag time between policy interventions and change in COVID-19 outcome trajectory in the United States. We develop a stepwise drifts random walk model to account for non-stationarity and strong temporal correlation and subsequently apply a change-point detection algorithm to estimate the number and times of change points in the COVID-19 outcome data. Furthermore, we harmonize data on the estimated change points with non-pharmaceutical interventions adopted by each state of the United States, which provides us insights regarding the lag time between the …
