Results Of Covid-19 Surveillance In A Large United States Pediatric Healthcare System Over One Year, Sarah E Messiah, Luyu Xie, Matthew S Mathew, George L Delclos, Harold W Kohl, Jeffrey S Kahn
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND: The lack of SARS-CoV-2 antigen surveillance testing in the pediatric population has inhibited accurate infection and hospitalization prevalence estimates. We aim to report the estimated prevalence of and risk factors for COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, and intensive care unit (ICU) admission across the three United States (US) waves in one of the largest pediatric healthcare systems in the nation.
METHODS: Retrospective electronic health record (EHR) review of all COVID-19 surveillance data among children aged 0-19 years seeking healthcare at one pediatric healthcare system that serves predominantly Medicaid-dependent families from 1 March 2020 to 31 March 2021. COVID-19 infection status (Y/N), …

Homeward Bound: The Current Rise Of Homeschooling And The Need For Regulation, Mary Fletcher
SLU Law Journal Online
With the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of American homeschoolers has drastically increased. While all fifty states have passed legislation allowing for homeschooling, regulations of homeschooling vary from state-to-state, with some states having virtually no regulation at all. In this essay, Mary Fletcher examines homeschooling laws and discusses the need for consistent federal regulation to ensure that homeschooled students receive an adequate education.

A Continuous Adjustment: The Impact Of Covid-19 On International Graduate Students, Carla Albornoz Moraga
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
International graduate students have endured unique obstacles during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explored the experiences of eight international graduate students from various countries and academic backgrounds. The following questions guided this study: (1) What were the experiences during the 2020 school year for international students throughout COVID- 19?; (2) What were the day-to-day experiences of international graduate students during COVID- 19?, and (3) How did the international graduate students cope and adjust as they lived through a pandemic? Analysis of the data demonstrated the impact on the international graduate students’ preconceived expectations of the academic and socio-cultural experiences, as …

When ‘Inside-Out’ Goes ‘Upside-Down’: Teaching Students In A Jail Environment During The Covid Pandemic And Implications For The Use Of Correctional Technology Post-Pandemic, Kimberly Collica-Cox
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
The transient population of county jails pose unique challenges for program implementation and maintenance. This past year, the spread of COVID-19 substantially increased such challenges, particularly since most correctional institutions are opposed to using Internet-based technologies, such as Zoom, in the secure part of their institution. Although college programming is rare in most jails, Inside-Out type classes, which allow college students to take a credited course alongside the incarcerated in a correctional setting, is a great way to provide a missed opportunity for purposeful intervention for the incarcerated, while providing a unique experiential learning opportunity for traditional undergraduate students. Based …

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-induced COVID-19 has emerged as a defining global health crisis in current times. Data from the World Health Organization shows demographic variations in COVID-19 severity and lethality. Diet may play a significant role in providing beneficial host cell factors contributing to immunity against deadly SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis. Spices are essential components of the diet that possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. Hyperinflammation, an aberrant systemic inflammation associated with pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, and multiorgan dysfunction, is a major clinical outcome in COVID-19. Knowing the beneficial properties of spices, we hypothesize that spice-derived bioactive components …

Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Young Adults Following Covid-19, Andrew Heckel
Theses - ALL
Introduction: SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, may cause a dysregulated systemic inflammatory response that could lead to cardiovascular damage and cause individuals recovering from COVID-19 to be at an increased risk for future cardiovascular disease (CVD). Physical activity (PA) is inversely associated with systemic inflammation and CVD risk, which may make it a useful cardioprotective lifestyle factor for individuals recovering from COVID-19. Purpose: 1) Compare arterial stiffness and systemic inflammatory levels between individuals recovering from COVID-19 and uninfected controls, 2) explore systemic inflammation as a predictor of arterial stiffness, and 3) explore PA as a mediator for the relationship …

Applying Classical Realism, Institutional Liberalism And Normative Theory To The Development And Distribution Of A Covid-19 Vaccine, Timothy Fay
Gettysburg Social Sciences Review
The development of a safe and effective Coronavirus vaccine has dominated the concerns of the international community over the course of the last six months. While the global community agrees on the importance of its development, it is not entirely clear how a vaccine will be distributed globally. The implications of which entity, whether a state or private company, develops a trusted vaccine first and how efficiently and equitably that vaccine is distributed are yet to be seen. Using Classical Realism, Institutional Liberalism, and Normative Theory, this paper seeks to discuss and analyze how the development of a vaccine will …

The novel COVID-19 outbreak is a major public health challenge that quickly turned into an economic recession of great proportions. This pandemic poses a trade-off between health and the economy where social distancing, quarantines, and isolation shut down demand and supply chains across the USA. This paper analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on illness and death among older adults and communities of color with low socioeconomic status in New York City. To achieve this goal, fractional logit models are used to capture changes in the novel virus’ morbidity and mortality rates at the neighborhood level. Median income, race/ethnicity, age, household …

The current spreading coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is highly infectious and pathogenic. In this study, we screened the gene expression of three host receptors (ACE2, DC-SIGN and L-SIGN) of SARS coronaviruses and dendritic cells (DCs) status in bulk and single cell transcriptomic datasets of upper airway, lung or blood of COVID-19 patients and healthy controls. In COVID-19 patients, DC-SIGN gene expression was interestingly decreased in lung DCs but increased in blood DCs. Within DCs, conventional DCs (cDCs) were depleted while plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs) were augmented in the lungs of mild COVID-19. In severe cases, we identified augmented types of immature DCs (CD22+ …

The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, which originated in Wuhan, China in December of 2019, has impacted nations all over the globe. Given the health disparities which existed within the United States prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, this pandemic continued to pose a significant challenge to the health of the public. The aims of this research study were twofold: (1) to analyze the incidence rates of COVID-19 among different racial and ethnic groups within the United States and (2) to describe the occurrence of diversity within medical texts. ABSTRACT
Social media platforms facilitate high-speed information sharing among digital technology users. But unregulated production of content across social media raises questions about the credibility of this content. During the COVID-19 pandemic, viral phenomena such as misinformation and conspiracy theories about the virus have spread rapidly across the globe, prompting misunderstanding, bias, and, at times, extreme actions both online and off. This thesis examines how language choices in social media posts function as a mode of action that not only can misinform but can serve to target certain groups for bias during a time of crisis. Specifically, it uses Kenneth …

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) seropositivity was assessed for 3,066 individuals visiting hospitals in St. Louis, Missouri, during July 2020, November 2020, or January 2021. Seropositivity in children increased from 5.22% in July to 21.16% in January. In the same time frame, seropositivity among adults increased from 4.52% to 19.03%, prior to initiation of mass vaccination.
