Corporate Wealth Over Public Health? Assessing The Resilience Of Developing Countries' Covid-19 Responses Against Investment Claims And The Implications For Future Public Health Crises, Tim Hagemann
Pace International Law Review
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, states around the world swiftly enacted a multitude of far-reaching emergency responses to contain the viruses’ spread and to cope with the economic repercussions of the ensuing crisis. However, these measures detrimentally impacted the operating conditions of many businesses or, at the least, decreased their profitability. As this inevitably affected foreign investments, investors could be tempted to invoke “Investor State Dispute Settlement” (“ISDS”) clauses in International Investment Agreements (IIAs) to initiate proceedings before arbitral tribunals and seek compensation for loss of profit caused by states’ Covid-19 responses. Due to the specific circumstances in …

We all are witnessing unprecedented pain and suffering, enduring unsurpassed tribulations. As a doctor working in an intensive care unit each day, I carry the burden of my patients and their families, my coworkers, my own family and friends. I never think about myself, the burden on my soul.
Yet I believe there will be a better tomorrow. A new day, where COVID times will be remembered with tears in our eyes yet a comfort in our smile that it’s past.

Phase 2 of a primary care needs assessment was administered to 63 practices in Western North Carolina over the course of six weeks, from July 23 to August 31, 2021.
Results
Most practices were operating with normal hours, though some still operated with reduced hours. Many practices reported insufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies. While most practices provided at least some care …

The article focuses on the analysis of the amended Polish provisions on the procedure for declaring consumer bankruptcy and the beginning of their operation, which coincided with the pandemic crisis and significant economic constraints. Numerous restrictions and announced blockades led to the deterioration of the economic situation of many companies, entrepreneurs and natural persons, therefore the new regulations were immediately put through a special test. The article consists of two parts: dogmatic and empirical. The former presents the new as well as the planned bankruptcy regulations. On the other hand, in the empirical part, statistics and reports on the functioning …

Impact Investment For Brics Cooperation On Sustainable Development, Anita Mujumdar, Alexey Shadrin
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
A sustainable development agenda has always been at the core of BRICS cooperation. However, the progress has been limited for many reasons, including economic diversity, over-reliance on Western technologies and capital, lack of own sources of financing, and common strategy. At the same time, accounting for over 40% of the global population, over 20% of the world’s GDP, and contributing to more than 40% of global CO2 emissions, BRICS countries are among the world’s most important players in sustainability and climate. Therefore, finding organic ways of sustainable growth in these countries is crucial to global efforts in achieving sustainable development …

The Effect Of Covid-19 Pandemic On Volatility Transmission Between The U.S. And Emerging Asia Stock Markets: A Case Study Of Tiger Cub Economies, Mien Nguyen Thi Ngoc, Tung Mai Son
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The globalization in financial markets has highlighted the importance of a clear understanding of volatility transmission among equity markets in different countries. This paper looks into the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volatility transmission between the U.S. stock market and five emerging equity markets called Tiger Cub economies in Southeast Asia. As the result of the dynamic conditional correlation GARCH (DCC-GARCH), the U.S. stock market’s volatility links positively to these smaller economies’ volatilities, and these linkages become stronger during the pandemic. We also find evidence of statistically significant co-volatility across five Tiger Cub markets. Due to the increase …

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This study aimed to find out if there are gender differences in how Filipinos adhere to the COVID-19 quarantine protocol. This research utilized the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as a framework. According to the TPB, the behavior to follow the COVID-19 protocol will be determined by one’s attitude, subjective norms, controllability, and self-efficacy. Media was added as a moderating variable between these predictors and the behavior to follow the COVID-19 protocol. An online survey was conducted amongst 200 females and 200 males in Metro Manila. This research locale was chosen as it had the highest COVID-19 infection rate in …

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland, and the need to introduce numerous restrictions in the public and private spheres, the liquidity of Polish consumers was disrupted and many lost their source of income. There was therefore a justified fear, in particular on the part of the Polish Government and the Polish Competition Authority, that consumers would turn to consumer credit providers, in particular lending institutions, to maintain their liquidity. New – temporary – limits for non-interest credit costs were established in March 2020. The limits were set up separately for loans with a repayment period of up to 30 …

Examining The Economic Impacts Of Restricted Energy Supply Chain On The Vietnamese Economy With Structure Path Analysis, Chung Van Nguyen
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The paper examines the impact of the restricted energy supply chain on key business sectors of Vietnam’s economy during the COVID-19 period by using structure path analysis combined with constrained fixed price multiplier to examine energy price changes for key business sectors of the economy between 2019 and 2020. The result shows that the change in coal price will likely lead to a downward trend in the overall price of the production. In particular, when the government restricts 10% of the energy supplies chain, the travel services, transportation services, trade, and repair services sectors will have the strongest impact on …

Based on the online survey responses from 371 …

It's no secret that with the development of information technology, many ethical problems of biomedicine have become aggravated. This is especially true of the issue of medical secrecy and protection of patient data. Digital medicine requires the opposite specifically in emergency situations: to disclose all the data concerning the course of the disease in order to reduce its further spread.
