Modeling And Simulation Of Emergency Medical Resources Allocation In Shanghai During Covid-19, Changjia Fan, Yanqiu Du, Liang Di, Hu Kai, Jiayan Huang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Modeling and simulating on the allocation of emergency medical resources in Shanghai with COVID-19 is carried out. Based on the SEIR model of infectious diseases, combined with the process of outpatients visiting and inpatients treatment, a SEIOWHR(susceptible-exposed-infected-outpatients- waiting to hospitalized-hospitalized-removed) system dynamics model is established. If the Wuhan epidemic occurred in Shanghai, based on the model, the amount of emergency medical resources needed, the gap time of medical resources and the disease progression of patients who are waiting to hospitalized under the different supply of medical resources is simulated, and the key factors in the allocation of medical …

Framing The Future Of The Us Military Profession, Richard A. Lacquement Jr., Thomas P. Galvin

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The military profession needs to be redefined by examination of its expertise and jurisdictions of practice, whereas previously the focus was on securing its professional identity. Twenty years ago, the original Future of the Army Profession research project responded to growing concerns among officers that the Army was no longer a profession in light of the post–Cold War drawdown and the onset of global operations including Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, the profession faces recurrent challenges raised by the changing character of war, the renewal of great-power competition, crises surrounding issues of sexual harassment and assault, the effects of a major …

Planting A Seed: United States And Florida Response To Coronavirus-19 Pandemic-Related Hunger, Melinda L. Lewis Phd, Paula T. Rappe Lcsw, Bsw Program Chair, Janet D. Albury Msw, Miu Ha Kwong Phd

Journal of Family Strengths

Food insecurity and poor nutritional intake as a possible mental health risk factor for children, adolescents and adults are addressed from an ecological perspective in the midst of a global pandemic. During the recent global Coronovirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, approximately 10% of U.S. households reported greater difficulty finding adequate food sources than were experienced prior to the pandemic. In response to food shortages, the U.S. Federal government passed legislation approving state waivers which suspended income verification and eligibility deadlines to expedite food assistance approval process for families during the pandemic. This enabled state flexibility in allocating Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) …

The Antibody Response To Sars-Cov-2 Beta Underscores The Antigenic Distance To Other Variants, Chang Liu, Rita E Chen, Michael S Diamond, Et Al. Jan 2022

The Antibody Response To Sars-Cov-2 Beta Underscores The Antigenic Distance To Other Variants, Chang Liu, Rita E Chen, Michael S Diamond, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Alpha-B.1.1.7, Beta-B.1.351, Gamma-P.1, and Delta-B.1.617.2 variants of SARS-CoV-2 express multiple mutations in the spike protein (S). These may alter the antigenic structure of S, causing escape from natural or vaccine-induced immunity. Beta is particularly difficult to neutralize using serum induced by early pandemic SARS-CoV-2 strains and is most antigenically separated from Delta. To understand this, we generated 674 mAbs from Beta-infected individuals and performed a detailed structure-function analysis of the 27 most potent mAbs: one binding the spike N-terminal domain (NTD), the rest the receptor-binding domain (RBD). Two of these RBD-binding mAbs recognize a neutralizing epitope conserved between SARS-CoV-1 and …

Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research

With the unprecedented and devastating impact of Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic on public health, high coverage of safe and efficacious vaccines against COVID-19 disease could contribute to the control of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in India vaccination strategy against COVID-19 was implemented to overcome this catastrophe as early as January 2021. Considering the novelty in adverse events and the dearth of research studies about the adverse event following immunization (AEFI) associated with COVID-19 vaccine, the present study aimed to determine the incidence and types of adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination among healthcare workers (HCWs). It was a prospective, observational …

What Do Epidemic History And Sexual Minority Men’S Experiences Of Hiv And Covid-19 Teach Us About Pandemic Preparedness?, Amy Braksmajer, Andrew London

Population Health Research Brief Series

For many, COVID-19 feels like the first, massive, life-threatening epidemic of infectious disease they have faced. However, for sexual minority individuals who have experienced trauma and loss stemming from the HIV epidemic, there are many similarities. This brief summarizes findings from interviews with men who have lived through both pandemics as a way to gain insights into the commonalities and differences of their experiences. Findings show that men who lived through both epidemics believe the government did not do enough to respond to either crisis. To better prepare for future epidemics, public health efforts must be less fragmented, including a …

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected over 200 million patients worldwide. COVID-19 is transmitted through respiratory droplets from patient to patient or by touching a surface that has been contaminated by an infected patient. Many COVID-19 patients have other comorbidities, such as end-stage renal disease. Currently, management of COVID-19 in patients with end-stage renal disease is unclear. Some studies have shown improvement in this population with the use of tocilizumab, a humanized interleukin-6 monoclonal antibody, in addition to the standard therapy as per guidelines published by the National Institutes of Health. In this case report, we present a patient case …

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Kuwait had its first COVID-19 in late February, and until October 6, 2020 it recorded 108,268 cases and 632 deaths. Despite implementing one of the strictest control measures-including a three-week complete lockdown, there was no sign of a declining epidemic curve. The objective of the current analyses is to determine, hypothetically, the optimal timing and duration of a full lockdown in Kuwait that would result in controlling new infections and lead to a substantial reduction in case hospitalizations.

Methods

The analysis was conducted using a stochastic Continuous-Time Markov Chain (CTMC), eight state model that depicts the disease transmission and …

Introduction: Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), is causing dramatic morbidity and mortality worldwide. The Red Blood Cell Distribution Width (RDW) has been strongly associated with increased morbidity and mortality in multiple diseases.

Objective: To assess if elevated RDW is associated with unfavorable outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19.

Methods: We retrospectively studied clinical outcomes of hospitalized COVID-19 patients for their RDW values. In-hospital mortality was defined as primary outcome, while septic shock, need for mechanical ventilation, and length of stay (LOS) were secondary outcomes.

Results: A total of 294 COVID-19 patients were finally studied. Overall prevalence …
