Covid-19’S Influence On Mental Health Among Collegiate Student-Athletes, Jacob Balliu, Steven M. Baule

Essays in Education

The world was struck by turmoil as the COVID-19 virus surged to the surface. Affecting the lives of many. In a matter of days, the process of daily living got a new meaning. The new lifestyle of living consisted of wearing masks, self-quarantining for fourteen days, and socially distancing six feet apart. From the perspective of a college student, life was flipped upside down. Classes were moved online, and students were asked to not be on campuses across the country for months on end. Collegiate student-athletes had it much rougher. Due to the global pandemic multiple sport seasons were cancelled …

Effect Of Sedation With Inhaled Anaesthetics On Cognitive And Psychiatric Outcomes In Critically Ill Adults: A Systematic Review Protocol, Sean Cuninghame, Kevin Gorsky, Conall Francoeur, Davinia Withington, Lisa Burry, Angela Jerath, Marat Slessarev

Neuroscience Institute Publications

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has renewed interest in the use of inhaled anaesthetics for sedation of ventilated critically ill patients. Preliminary data show that inhaled anaesthetics reduce lung inflammation, time to extubation and intensive care unit length of stay compared with intravenous sedatives. However, the impact of inhaled anaesthetics on cognitive and psychiatric outcomes is not well described in this setting. Randomised controlled trials are underway to establish if inhaled anaesthetics affect these and other patient and health system outcomes. Our aim is to summarise the known effects of inhaled sedatives on cognitive and psychiatric outcomes. Methods and analysis In …

What Drug Candidates Exist For Treating Covid-19 Variants?, Kolton Hauck

Research on Capitol Hill

USU senior Kolton studies biological engineering and led this project with funding from a student grant. Kolton’s project has been mapping out all possible protein interactions from known SARS-CoV-2 variants and identifying possible drug treatments. Viruses function through these interactions between their proteins and the host cell’s proteins, and this project is especially valuable because the candidates identified are predicted to help treat all known variants, making them more likely to be effective against future mutations.Kolton’s interest in biological research stems from his own experience managing a genetic health disorder. Past medical research greatly benefited him, and he sees his …

Great Disaster: The Impact Of Covid-19 On Yemen, Joshua Odey

Liberty University Journal of Statesmanship & Public Policy

The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected countries around the world. Travel became restricted as countries around the world tried to control the pandemic. The global economy was also negatively affected. Nonetheless, many countries around the world took measures to control the economy and have successfully reduced the number of cases and the negative impact of COVID-19. This is not so with other countries such as Yemen, who is currently facing a humanitarian crisis that has greatly weakened their ability to respond to the pandemic.

The purpose of this research paper is to show how COVID-19 has negatively affected Yemen. For more …

A Library Website Redesign In The Time Of Covid, Erin Rushton, Bern Mulligan

Library Scholarship

In December 2019, Binghamton University Libraries initiated a website redesign project. Our goal was to create a user-centred, data-driven website with refreshed content and upgraded functionality. Originally, our redesign plan included in-person card-sorting activities, focus groups, and usability studies, but when the Libraries went remote in March 2020, we had to quickly reassess and adapt our processes and workflows. In this presentation, we will discuss how we completed this significant project remotely by relying on effective project management, communication, teamwork, and flexibility. We will also share the outcomes of the project and discuss our future goals for the Libraries' website.

BACKGROUND: Communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. We explored barriers and facilitators to COVID-19 vaccine uptake among African American, Latinx, and African immigrant communities in Washington, DC.

METHODS: A total of 76 individuals participated in qualitative interviews and focus groups, and 208 individuals from communities of color participated in an online crowdsourcing contest.

RESULTS: Findings documented a lack of sufficient, accurate information about COVID-19 vaccines and questions about the science. African American and African immigrant participants spoke about the deeply rooted historical underpinnings to their community's vaccine hesitancy, citing the prior and ongoing mistreatment of people of …

Emergence of mutant SARS-CoV-2 strains associated with an increased risk of COVID-19-related death necessitates better understanding of the early viral dynamics, host responses and immunopathology. Single cell RNAseq (scRNAseq) allows for the study of individual cells, uncovering heterogeneous and variable responses to environment, infection and inflammation. While studies have reported immune profiling using scRNAseq in terminal human COVID-19 patients, performing longitudinal immune cell dynamics in humans is challenging. Macaques are a suitable model of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our longitudinal scRNAseq of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cell suspensions from young rhesus macaques infected with SARS-CoV-2 (n = 6) demonstrates dynamic changes in transcriptional …

Student And Instructor Perceptions Of Online Teaching Related To Covid-19: The Need For Reflective Practices, Mary Bowne, Melissa Wuellner, Jessie H. Hendricks, John Howard

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Access the online Pressbooks version of this article here.

Although online learning has been in existence for over 20 years, not all instructors have been trained to teach online or had the desire to teach online. The recent COVID-19 pandemic quickly changed typical face-to-face instruction and disrupted the current educational system by requiring all college courses be delivered online, either asynchronous or synchronous using various software platforms. This paper investigated both instructors’ and students’ perceptions of faculty online teaching preparedness as well as their thoughts related to various technological resources and issues that arose during this time period. Results indicated …

Moral Foundations Predict Perceptions Of Moral Permissibility Of Covid-19 Public Health Guideline Violations In United States University Students, Kathryn Bruchmann, Liya Lapierre

Psychology

In the United States, the COVID-19 pandemic has become highly politicized and highly moralized. The current study explored whether participants’ (N = 118) endorsements of binding (promoting group cohesion) versus individualizing (promoting care for individuals) moral foundations explained partisan differences in views and behaviors regarding COVID-19. Participants completed the Moral Foundations Questionnaire before they indicated how morally permissible they thought it was to violate COVID-19 mandates, report others’ violations, or not get vaccinated. Additionally, they indicated their own prevention behaviors. Results show that endorsement of both individualizing and binding foundations explain partisan differences in moral permissibility ratings. Political conservatism predicted …

Capitalizing Covid-19: A Content Discourse Analysis Of Corporate Welfare Perceptions Amid A Global Pandemic, Alessia Rao

Social Justice and Community Engagement Major Research Papers

Corporate welfare has covertly thrived throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, providing society’s elite with “financial relief” in the form of government subsidies. This method of financial relief is known as the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), and continues to be used as a method in which corporate welfare transpires. CEWS, a publicly funded benefit initially implemented with the intention to ease businesses back into normal operations, promote their lifespans, prevent additional job losses and re-hire workers, has additionally been used as a means for large, highly solvent corporations to dispense dividends to shareholders and executives amid the economically challenging pandemic of …
