World Health Organization (WHO) named the disease as COVID-19 and declared it a pandemic. Ultrasound has developed as an invaluable tool in diagnosis and proper management in the intensive care unit (ICU). Application of critical care ultrasonography is quite distinct from the routine comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound exam, because the urgent setting mandates a goal-directed approach. Performing accurate and efficient critical care ultrasound requires ultrasound providers to first understand the pathophysiology of the disease and related imaging findings, and then follow the protocols to perform a focused ultrasound exam. The COVID-19 pandemic is unlike any experience humanity has endured. While the pandemic is certainly biological in nature, through the transmission of the novel coronavirus, the experience of the pandemic is inherently social. Researchers may not yet conceptualize pandemics as disasters, but we are beginning to see evidence that they are playing out in some similar ways (widespread social disruption, job loss in particular industries, economic hardship, and illness and death). Disaster researchers emphasize the importance of what is known as social capital, or, the resources (social, economic, emotional) accrued through ones’ social ties.

New research suggests that the smoke firefighters breathe on the front lines of wildfires is putting them at greater risk from the new coronavirus, with potentially lethal effects.

Nebraska Innovation Studio coordinating army of makers for personal protective equipment (PPE) projects.

While assembling up to 1,800 face shields (https://news.unl.edu/newsrooms/today/article/nebraska-umakers- step-up-to-equip-healers/) a day, staff at Nebraska Innovation Studio (https://innovationstudio.unl.edu/nebraska-innovation-studio) are also assisting coordination of an army of community workers and volunteers to make more personal protective equipment, namely gowns for first responders and fabric masks for essential workers.

After the success of the face shield project, Innovation Studio staff started fielding requests for new projects — chief among them: protective gowns for first responders.
