Amid the bleakness of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Illinois PPE Network is an inspiring grassroots success story. Comprising volunteer makers of personal protective equipment (PPE) across the Chicagoland area, the alliance was seeded at DePaul’s Idea Realization Lab (IRL) by its director, Jay Margalus, a School of Design instructor, who assembled a force of 3-D printers to create face shields for health care workers.

An Overview Of The Effect Of Bioaerosol Size In Coronavirus Disease 2019 Transmission, Marcelo I. Guzman

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The fast spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) constitutes a worldwide challenge to the public health, educational and trade systems, affecting the overall well-being of human societies. The high transmission and mortality rates of this virus, and the unavailability of a vaccine or treatment, resulted in the decision of multiple governments to enact measures of social distancing. Such measures can reduce the exposure to bioaerosols, which can result in pathogen deposition in the respiratory tract of the host causing disease and an immunological response. Thus, it is important to consider the validity of the proposal for keeping a distance of …

Action in Education

DePaul's College of Education devised ways for its students to get student-teaching experience when schools moved to remote learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Graduates were invited to participate in a mentoring and coaching program, Teaching Strategies and Resources 2020, starting with online, self-paced modules to review the fundamentals in those identified areas of need. The Education and Counseling Center (ECC) shifted all sessions online and thus expanded its counseling and tutoring services.

Contemporary Homeschooling: Black Children’S Best Interests, Freedom From Religion, And Anti-Racism, Andrea L. Dennis, Cheryl Fields-Smith

Scholarly Works

The coronavirus pandemic has increased interest in homeschooling, igniting discussion and debate surrounding the intersections of family and children’s rights, religious freedom, and education law. This essay raises awareness regarding the changing faces of homeschool families which challenge notions of equity and familial rights related to education and religion. We draw on the above representative quote from Anneliese to provide understanding of the benefits and meaning of homeschooling from an African American perspective.

Traditional homeschooling – in which parents assume full responsibility for their children’s education outside of public or private school settings – long has been viewed as a …

Personality, Online Learning, And Covid-19, Dareen Christabel, Hannah Fields, Sarah M. Krysl, Mariah Rodriguez

Student Work

While characteristics of in-person learning versus online learning and the impact of personality on academic success have been studied, the nature of these variables in the context of a stressful event like the COVID-19 pandemic remains undetermined. This quantitative correlational survey analysis investigated 133 participants’ prior online learning experience and neuroticism levels, via the Big Five personality test, to examine relationships between those two variables and the variables of perceived learning, change in GPA, and perceived lost learning during COVID-19. Researchers found no significant correlations or effects between any of these variables. Researchers concluded that while the variables in question …

Background: Individuals’ stress in responding to the current COVID-19 pandemic may be exacerbated by information uncertainty driven by inconsistent, unverified, and conflicting news from various sources. The current study aims to test if information uncertainty during the COVID-19 outbreak was related to acute stress disorder (ASD) over and above other psychosocial stressors.

Methods: An anonymous online survey was conducted with 7800 college students throughout China from January 31 through February 11, 2020. Existing scales were modified to measure ASD and six potential stressors including information uncertainty during the COVID-19 outbreak. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to assess the unique association …
